Is it possible for me to obtain a POA for an adult family member, not living with me, who, due to chronic illness, is too sick to hold a job or even apply for SSD?

    • Bill L.

I did not clarify that the POA would be to allow me to apply for SSD for this sick family member who is unable to do it himself d/t his ongoing illness.

    • alius H.

An attorney can answer this for you and help your family member appoint you.

  7. Judy B.

How do I go about receiving my ex social security. I will be turning 66 in few weeks.

    • A.C.

Thanks for your question, Judy. To be eligible for divorced spouse benefits, you had to be married to your former spouse for at least 10 years, and you cannot beeligible for a higher benefit on your own record. For more information on how to qualify for divorced spouse benefits, check out our Benefits Planner: If You Are Divorced. Hope this helps!

Asked how to have taxes taken out of my monthly SS benefit check – no good answer. That is all I want – to start having taxes taken out of my check – period.

    Thanks

    • A.C.

Hi, Lynn. In order to have taxes withheld from your Social Security benefit, you must start by printing, completing and submitting an IRS Voluntary Withholding Request Form (Form W-4V). On this form, you can choose to have 7, 10, 12, or 22 percent of your monthly benefit withheld. The Form W-4V (to withhold federal taxes from your Social Security benefits) can be returned to your local Social Security office by mail or in person. See our Benefits Planner: Withholding Income Tax From Your Social Security Benefits web page for more information. Thanks!

I need to report my sisters death. I cannot get through the phone lines. I’ve been trying for two days. I can’t find where I need to go on the website either. Can you help me.

    • A.C.

Hi, Dee. We are sorry to hear about your loss. Typically, the funeral director notifies us of an individual’s passing by sending the deceased person’s death certificate to their local Social Security office. However, you may also report the death of a Social Security beneficiary by calling 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778) between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m., calling your local Social Security office or by submitting the death certificate to your local Social Security office. We hope this helps!
