So … 1 hour and 20 minutes later I got a very helpful guy probably in California (said “Good afternoon” when it’s 8:30 pm here in the East). He asked for my name and number etc., and then told me no-can-do on setting up a my socialsecurity account BECAUSE my Equifax account was locked. We’d done that after the big breach there, but you know what … ssa.gov doesn’t tell people in any obvious place to UNLOCK your Equifax account before starting the set up a my account process.
THEN, after reading the above comments about people not being able to get usernames approved, I asked the guy about that. He said that USERNAMES can only — ONLY — be a combination of letters and numbers, but NO SPECIAL CHARACTERS! The password, however, CAN include special characters. Sounds simple, but can I guess whether this is spelled out online as one is cued to create a username?? I’m guessing it isn’t — tho I admit I haven’t seen that screen because of the Equifax thing.
How about creating a findable FAQ that includes that information? Anyone?

What this page does NOT say is that when something unknown prevents you from creating a ‘my socialsecurity account’ online, that you’ll be given a phone number only. (One cannot, apparently, get help via email.) Also, if you call after 7pm eastern, you may get tossed into a 2 hour waiting queue. The FAQs on the SSA.gov website don’t help with thus situation. And why isn’t there any sort of mechanism where I can leave my number and have you call me back? Sigh…this process is NOT at all quick and easy as suggested above.
