All local Social Security offices will be closed to the public for in-person service starting Tuesday, March 17, 2020. This decision protects the population we serve—older Americans and people with underlying medical conditions—and our employees during the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. However, we are still able to provide critical services.

Please read our press release to learn more, including how to get help from the Social Security Administration by phone and online. You can also visit our website to learn more and stay up to date.

How can families that have someone with a disability who works report income received (paychecks) to SSA? They usually bring their check stubs to their local SS office.
    Thanks!

    • Rosalie

I just spoke with someone at SSA. They said each SS office has a drop box which staff will check regularly. Families can also mail things to their local office, but should include a cover letter with the person’s name, date of birth, and SSN. They can also submit items online. Many thanks!

Coming from my world, we would consider her response not very diplomatic.

I applied for retirement benefits from abroad 3 months ago (mid-December).
I was eligible to receive my first benefit payment in April. So far I have no confirmation. A month ago I spoke to SSA and was told that new applications were back-logged and the normal processing time of 3 months would now be 6 months or more! Will the back-log be longer now due to Covid-19? SSA confirmed that I would receive retroactive pay, but I’ve heard that could be as late as August or September.

Hi, Deborah. Since you are living outside of the U.S. you can contact your local Federal Benefits Unit for any assistance related to Social Security benefits. Also, our Office of International Operations home page provides more information to assist our customers living abroad. We hope this helps.
