All local Social Security offices will be closed to the public for in-person service starting Tuesday, March 17, 2020. This decision protects the population we serve—older Americans and people with underlying medical conditions—and our employees during the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. However, we are still able to provide critical services.

Please read our press release to learn more, including how to get help from the Social Security Administration by phone and online. You can also visit our website to learn more and stay up to date.

Will the payment center (Baltimore) still be open?

  2. Susan C.

Despite the fact that I was married for over 13 years and have not remarried, I am not receiving my ex-spouses’s social security benefits. How can I change this? Now, at the age of 63, I receive only slightly over 200 per month. I should be receiving half of my ex-husband’s benefits which are considerably more.

What can I do about this while the offices are closed as they are now?

Finally, the last time I tried to ask this question, I received a message that said that this was a duplicate message. I do not recall having sent the first one to the Social Security Office.

Hi, Susan. To be eligible for divorced spouse benefits, you had to be married to your former spouse for at least 10 years, and you cannot be eligible for a higher benefit on your own record. For more information on how to qualify for divorced spouse benefits, visit our Benefits Planner: If You Are Divorced. For specific questions, you can call our toll-free number at 1-800-772-1213 for assistance. Representatives are available between 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. You will generally have a shorter wait time if you call later in the day. We hope this helps.

How can I get my statement. For the year?

    • Ann C.

Hi, Janet. If you are referring to the SSA-1099 tax form Social Security mails each year in January to people who receive Social Security benefits, you can request a replacement SSA-1099/1042S for Tax Year 2019 by visiting your personal my Social Security account. We hope this helps.

      • Joni

Can you file taxes using that form even if taxes weren’t taken out??

  5. Harold B.

I am a Veteran and was told that if I am using the VA doctors and the VA facility that I could not get $50 back on my Medicare payments.
    Is this true or not???

    • Ann C.

Hi, Harold. Unfortunately, your question is a bit more complex than we can handle in this forum. For your security, we do not have access to information about your account in this venue. To get additional information on Medicare benefits, check out http://www.medicare.gov/. You may also wish to contact your local Medicare SHIP (State Health Insurance Program Coordinator) to discuss your concerns. We hope this helps.

To the people, whom may be concerned, about FEDERAL COURT appearance, in order to receive an answer, on your AWARD LETTER. Should you have an ATTORNEY and or REPRESENTATIVE, who is in support, of your best interest for your case, then that person, (SHOULD) be in contact with you, about the proceedings. One other thing to think about is, the FEDERAL COURTS and SOCIAL SECURITY are two separate operations. Hope this might take away your fears.

Of course it will happen, if you been waiting for 2 years for your appointment, it will take place unless Trumpy-Grumpy decided to close the SSA down cause he hates people that get money from the government!! This Virus too shall pass!!

Are the people collecting checks are they still getting them deposited on time or they delayed?

    • Ann C.

Hi, Frank. You will continue to receive your monthly benefit amount if you use Direct Deposit. For pay dates, check out our Schedule of Social Security Payments. We hope this helps.

      • Kay

You keep saying “if you use a Direct Deposit”. My parents are 85/and get theirs mailed to them. Will they receive their checks as usual?

        • Jennifer

They will still get their checks, but people are being advised to contact USPS to see if there will be a delay with receiving mail. Hope this helps.

      • Beth

I have direct express. Will it stay the same ? My guess is yes.
I however do not understand why on a income of 783$ people on ssi will not get any help from y’all . People that pay taxes get there taxes back . We struggle every month to take care of ourselves on 100 $ in food stamps n 783 $ in money. 🙁
        Makes no sense

To the person asking about the SS letter. I received one of those letters as well and it is 100% a scam letter. Do like I did rip it up, throw it away, and don’t give it another thought. There is nothing about that letter that is an authentic Social Security letter. If it still bugs you should call the “real” social security phone number – not those on the letter sent to you – 1 (800) 772-1213. You can look up that number yourself on the internet to be sure it is authentic. I do not work for social security. I collect it just like you, but did receive that scam letter.

What is going to happen to the court cases that a already scheduled? I really need to keep this court date so they can make the decision on my case. I applied April 6th 2018, and my court date is set for April 21st 2020. Do you think it will be kept on track?
    Thanks

        Hello,
To my understanding all in person hearings have been postponed for now and may take place via web/ teleconference instead. Within the hearing packet you received in the mail on the top right hand corner of the paper there will be the number of your local hearing office. Please expect some additional delays and have faith in Gods countrymen that they will not abandon the sick or elderly in this horrific time. I would contact my local hearing office to reschedule my hearing via telephone instead of in person and they should be able to keep your set date. Have a blessed one and stay safe.
