you know where to find usFor 80 years, Social Security has been there for you and your family when you need us most. And, finding us at our field offices, where you can speak with an employee face-to-face, is easier than ever!

Our handy Field Office Locator is accessible from your computer and mobile device. On the website, you can enter your zip code to find the address, phone number and hours of the Social Security office closest to you. You can also use this tool to see a map and get directions; if you’re on your mobile device, it will even give you turn-by-turn directions.

Since you are already online, you could skip the traffic and lines by taking advantage of our other online features, too. Check out What You Can Do Online, where you’ll find that many of our services are just a click away!

For example, you use the Retirement Estimator to estimate future benefits, apply for Social Security benefits online and sign up for a personal my Social Security account. Setting up a personal my Social Security account is convenient and secure. You’ll have access to your Social Security Statement, and if you already receive benefits, you can view and print your verification letter and manage your benefits.

Some people prefer doing business in person, though, and that’s why our offices are there! Our employees are passionate about providing you with the best service possible, and we’re proud of our long history of doing so. When you visit us, whether in person or online, we’re always ready to help!

I had my wallet stolen and it included my social security card. How do I notify SSA that it was stolen, and how do I get a replacement SS card?

If I want full retirement benefits, and I am turning 66 on May 16, do I put May or June on the application as the month I want benefits to start?

    • V.V.

Hi Cynthia, thank you for your question. If you wait until your full retirement age, you will get your full benefit. If your full retirement age is 66 and you turn 66 on May 16, you will attain your full retirement age in May. One exception to that is for individuals that are born on the 1st of the month. We figure their benefit (and their full retirement age) as if their birthday was in the previous month.

Your full retirement age is determined by your year of birth. You can check out our Retirement Planner: Benefits By Year Of Birth to understand why some people have different full retirement ages and what those ages are.

I have 2 questions. I am a state government employee. Is there a prohibition in collecting state disability and SSD? Also, should I file for SSD before I file for retirement from my job or after. I have been on medical leave for serveral months. Thank you!

    • A.C.

Hi, Ramona. Thanks for your question. It is possible for you to receive both. However, if you receive a payment from worker’s compensation, a public disability benefit, or a pension based on earnings not insured under Social Security, it may reduce your benefit. For more information, visit our Frequently Asked Questions. Disability Benefits are paid to people who are unable to work because of a medical condition that is expected to last one year or more or to end in death. We pay disability benefits through two programs: the Social Security Disability Insurance program (SSDI), and the Supplemental Security Income (SSI). SSI is a needs-based disability program that pays benefits to people with limited income and resources who are disabled, blind, or age 65 or older. The SSDI program provides benefits to insured disabled or blind adults covered by workers’ contributions to the Social Security trust funds. If you feel that you meet our definition of disability, you can apply online. We hope this information helps.

  10. Katrina M.

Like to set up an appointment in the buffalo office on march 15th in the afternoon. Could you please help me? I tried calling but was told call again.

    • A.C.

Hi, Katrina. You do not have to make an appointment to come in to our offices, but with an appointment, you will be helped before our walk-in customers. You can schedule an appointment with your local office by calling us at 1-800-772-1213 between 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Friday, and a representative will assist you. In most cases, you can handle your business by phone. Generally, you will have a shorter wait if you call later in the day. Also, keep in mind that many of our services are conveniently available anytime at our website. We hope this helps.
