Me and my ex-husband are both 63 year of age as of Jan 2018. We were married for 20 years before getting divorced.
Can I get social security through his benefits even if they are lower then mine at this stage in life and then when I turn 66 plus 3 months drops his and turn around and get social security thru my employment and earn more?

  2. Susan

I probably do not have the correct forum for what I am posting about social security but here goes anyway.

My mother recently died (on 12/31/17 at approx. 11:30 pm). Now as we all know SS pays a month behind, so the payment she received on 1/3/18 was for 12/17. However, on 01/11/18 SS reclaimed the payment and took it back out of her account. I called and was told basically because she died before the end of December [roughly 30 minutes] that they then reclaim the entire month of December. In other words if she had waited another 30 minutes to pass her Dec. payment would not have been reclaimed. Can anyone explain how this makes any sense. Oh well, guess that is just another way to “rebuild” the deficient. Cheap shot if you ask me.

My mom has changed addresses twice since mid year 2017. I would like to get her a permanent mailing address such as a p.o. Box so that every time she changes facilities we don’t have to chase down her mail. Currently her health is failing and she won’t be able (she’s 91)to go to the post office and complete a change of address form. When I look online it specifically states the government prohibits me from changing information on anyone other than myself. How can her address be updated so that her SS information is not randomly mailed elsewhere.?

    • R.F.

Thank you for contacting us, Cornelia. It sounds like your mother may need help managing her Social Security benefits. We recommend that you consider becoming her Representative Payee.
A Representative Payee is different than having “Power of Attorney”. As a representative payee, it will make it easier for you in the future to update information on your mother’s record.
To make an appointment with the local Social Security office, call our toll free number at 1-800-772-1213. Representatives are available Monday through Friday, between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. Thanks.

Want to move to a different state what changes need to be made???

    • R.F.

Hi Adam. If you get Social Security benefits, if you’re enrolled in Medicare or if you get SSI benefits, you must report your change of address, as soon as possible. See our Frequently Asked Questions web page for more information.

  5. Mary D.

Question: My husband is over 70 and receiving SS benefit. I am 67 and am enrolled in medicare but have not asked to start receiving benefits based upon my earning record.
Is there a provision that would enable me to receive benefits based upon my husbands earning record now and then change to my record when I reach 70?

No response on why SSA takes 3 years to process a disability application through the hearing stage.

    You should ALL BE FIRED!

Since taxpayers are paying your salaries and getting low productivity in return, you should all be terminated. Stop letting attorney advisors and others work from home when they have a 75000 case backlog to tend to.

You do realize americans are starving in the streets because social security refuses to issue a decision to their disability case.

You guys are lucky I’m not your commissioner. You would all be on the unemployment line.

    • Larry

Also adding. Why are you guys asking congress for more money? What do the people at SSA do anyway?

You can have kiosks to take social security card requests. 14 billion dollars is an insane amount of money that SSA goes through when they can’t even process disability applications in a timely manner.

My fellow americans: Petition your congress to reorganize SSA into something meaningful.

  7. Buddy S.

I am on disability and I want to try and work a few hours per day, and I will be 62 this year, does it matter how much money I can earn per month and still get my disability

    • Carol H.

Yes, it does matter how much money you make. Generally, the rule that you can earn a maximum income of $1,410 a month and still receive Social Security. For more information, I suggest checking out the blog http://directexpresshelp.com. They have a lot of good info on Social Security. Best of luck.

      • R.F.

Hi Carol, the $1,410 amount reflects the monthly amount allowed for someone receiving Social Security retirement benefits, who was under full retirement age and working in 2017. See our Retirement Planner: Getting Benefits While Working.
Different rules apply if you receive Social Security disability benefits or Supplemental Security Income payments. Please read our publication Working While Disabled: How We Can Help. Thanks!

    • R.F.

Thank you for your question Buddy. Social Security strongly supports those individuals who want to return to the work force while supplementing their disability benefit income. We have Work Incentives that allow people to work and still receive their benefits. A person may still be eligible for disability benefits under the Social Security Disability Insurance program if they work. However, their earnings cannot exceed a certain amount. This is called the Substantial Gainful Activity (SGA) limit.
In addition to the amount of money you make, Social Security may also look at the number of hours you’re able to work. We hope this information helps.

My husband and I were of appropriate age to qualify for “file and suspend” and did so before the deadline. Now, however I am unable to reach anyone at the Social Security office that can give me accurate information on how to activate this program. Is there a reliable source or department that I should be contacting? Every time I call I get a different agent at Social Security and a different answer…
