I want to report my father status was pass away on April 12, 2020 to close his social security number. How can I do it? Please help.

    • Vonda V.

Hi Jane. We are very sorry for your loss. Typically, the funeral director notifies us of an individual’s passing by contacting the local Social Security office. To verify this information was reported, call our toll free number at 1-800-772-1213 or you can contact your local Social Security office directly. Please look for the general inquiry telephone number at the Social Security Office Locator. The number may appear under Show Additional Office Information. Please be aware that our call wait times are longer than normal. We hope this information helps.

My fiance is now 32 years old and at the age of 10 his father passed away. We were wondering if he can still apply for the benefits of his fathers passing and receive the back pay he was entitled to at that time

my spouse started receiving ss benefits at age 62 in 2008. I started receiving my ss benefits at age 64 in 2013. my question is can my husband apply for spousal benefits. If so, how do I go about doing this.

    • Vonda V.

Hi Patsy, thank you for using our blog. We will always pay a person’s own retirement benefit first. If their benefits as a spouse are higher than their own retirement benefits, they will get a combination of benefits equaling the higher spouse benefit. However, keep in mind that a spouse’s benefit cannot exceed one-half of the worker’s full retirement amount (not their reduced benefit amount). So, a person is only going to receive additional spouse’s benefits if their own full retirement benefit (not their reduced benefit) is less than half of their spouse’s full retirement benefit.

For additional details on spouse’s benefits, check out our Benefits Planner: Benefits For You As A Spouse.

Greetings, I’ve been locked out of MY Social Security online for more than a month. SSA sends me temp passwords to get back in, however, never, complete instructions to do so. Therefore, after 3 attempts, I’m locked out again. Please let them and me know a step by step guidance. I think this would help those of us who are not as computer savvy!

    • Vonda V.
