      Hi, Timothy. First, realize that you may not need a replacement card. You will rarely need to show it. Knowing the Social Security number is what is important. To see if you’re eligible to apply for a replacement Social Security card online, to learn more on the process and what documents you will need to get a card or even print an application, please visit our Social Security Number and Card page. Keep in mind all submitted documents must be either originals or copies certified by the issuing agency and must (unless otherwise indicated) have been issued within the last two years. We cannot accept photocopies or notarized copies of documents. Once you’ve submitted all the needed documents, it can take up to 10 business days from the date we received the application to mail a replacement card. We hope this helps.

    Benefits are great thing to have for people who really need them. Some times people that need help don’t get it and end up up losing everything or worse.

    I have a card already for my 16 year old that was internationally adopted at 4 months old in 2003. I took the passport that I just applied and got for her to my local office to change her status to citizen from “alien able to work”. They could not do this. Because I applied for the passport before she was 16 it is a 5 year expiration but it was issued after her birthday due to paperwork delays. They said the system would not let them enter the 5 year expiration in the system to update her because she is over 16. A supervisor came over and neither still knew what to do. I had all her other adoption decress and such but they said those did not work. I called the 800 number and they referred me back to the local office. What do I need to do to update her? I have a valid passport and adoption proof that shows I adopted her and I am a US born and residing citizen.

      Hi, Ron. We are sorry to hear about your frustration. For your security, we do not have access to private information in this venue. We ask that members in our Blog community to continue to work with our offices with specific questions. You can contact your local Social Security office and ask to speak to a supervisor or manager. We hope this is resolved soon.

    • Vonda V.

      Hi Mark. You can use a my Social Security account to request a replacement Social Security card online if you:
      • Are a U.S. citizen age 18 years or older with a U.S. mailing address;
      • Are not requesting a name change or any other change to your card; and
      • Have a driver’s license or a state-issued identification card from one of the many participating states. If your state does not yet participate in this service, check back soon. More states are added regularly.

      If you cannot apply for a card online, you will need to show the required documents. We need to see different documents depending on your citizenship and the type of card you are requesting. See Learn What Documents You Need to find out what documents you will have to show.
