  1. Thank you. I can’t benefit from these services, because I am not able to establish an account without a US mailing address
Unfortunately, I will remain outside the loop until comes a time when this problem is resolved.
    Thanks.Fahmi N.

    • I have an address in th US and I still can’t establish an account. I only have a debit card, no w2 or other tax doc am outside the USA and trying to establish commu ication via the Porto Rico US Consulate. But the email address provided by their website for the public to contact them gets no rply, error message.

I do not have a phone plan that affords calling the USA.

      Any suggestions

      • I have a friend who recently got his approval for social security disability and received a large lump sum for his back pay in December. His injury was brain trauma and most days seems fine but numbers and the internet etc are hard for him so I was trying to help him out. While doing this i discovered that a family member of his used his direct express debit card info online to make “many” unauthorized purchases. It totals up to about $18,000 in a 4 month time period beginning in Dec and going on until March when I had him cancel his old card and get a new one. They had used his card info to do it all online without his permission or knowledge. As they knew he wouldn’t catch it they didn’t even try to hide it using their own name, accounts and address. But of course I did catch and have gotten proof of the charges plus their admittance of guilt in writting. So my question is: how would I go about recovering this money for him Kimwithout sending the family member to jail? I know he really needs an attorney but doesn’t trust them or anyone but me now. Help please because I sure don’t want to let him down. Thanks

      • question for the staff at soc sec office can I get a raise next year from social security I could really use one I thought it would be in or say on Decembers check but my letter from soc sec showing the amount awarded don’t really reflect a amount showing I am really getting a raise from I can tell of hand can some one check into it for me to see if I am going to get a raise in amount thank you Austin texas remember I got a direct deposit the 3rd being on a sunday I guess I should be getting checks on Friday

  2. Protecting cost of living is also important . I cannot see how the Social Security Fund can keep up with cost of living as long as it relies entirely on Treasury bills as an investment portfolio.. The stock market may not be a wise place to invest , but everyone has an IRA or Keogh account as if nothing can happen to them… This is a real paradox to me..Also, it looks like the Congress is keeping a brake on cost of living for Social Security, needlessly . We are trying to drive uphill only to have ourselves braked back . Something is not going right or fair somewhere..

  3. Equifax was hired a year ago to help the SSA manage risk and mitigate fraud for the mySocialSecurity system and have announced they are “completely integrated”. So, does the SSA website have the same security vulnerability that led to the Equifax breach?

    • Hi, Jana. Although we sometimes use Equifax to help verify your identity when setting up a my Social Security account, Social Security never shares Social Security numbers with Equifax. For concerns regarding the Equifax data breach, please contact Equifax directly at 866-447-7559 or http://www.equifaxsecurity2017.com/. Thanks.

  4. I would recommend an automatic email communication whenever a change, claim, access was granted on each account. It is an easy/cheap way to insure I know when my account has been accessed. My bank does it, my itunes account does it. Seems like my SocSec benefits are at least as important as those? 🙂

    • I like this idea, an email or text message would help stop ID fraud. I would also suggest the email or text contain a secret word, known only to the user, would authenticate the message is actually from the SSA.

    • Hello Ernie. If you are having difficulties with your personal my Social Security account, please call 1-800-772-1213 for assistance. After you hear “Briefly tell me why you are calling,” say “Help Desk” for help with a my Social Security account. Sometimes, it might be best to visit your local Social Security office for further assistance. Thanks!

    • Hi Elizabeth, please call 1-800-772-1213 for assistance. After you hear “Briefly tell me why you are calling,” say “Help Desk” for help with a my Social Security account. Thanks!

  5. Please send the Credit Card type ID that removes the social secuirty number from our Med Cards its unbelievable that SS# would be listed on Med card with all the ID Theft Please hurry and send those new med cards

  6. Cell phones don’t work at my home. For email I have to log out of your site logon to my email then logout of my email and log back on to your site.
Why not make a landline call to my home phone as the second way to identify?

    • Carol. What web browser are you using?
I use FireFox and can have multiple tabs open all the time. I can login to SSA, login to view my email, banking accounts etc. all without logging out of other sites. Edge and Chrome also allow multiple tabs to be open also. I hope this will help you.

  7. I had a problem with my personal information like my phone number to contact me and called the 800 number so they can fix this problem and I had a phone appointment today September 15, 2017 and because no one fixed my problem I missed my phone appointment. I have called to let them know but still haven’t got another phone call?????

  8. For those of us that established Fraud Alerts on our credit reports because we got screwed by Equifax losing our data, don’t bother trying to open a online account with Social Security because the fraud alert prevents you from opening a Social Security online access account. Why aren’t the Equifax executives in jail for selling their stock when they found out they lost all of our data?

    • Thanks for posting this. I have a freeze and was trying to use MySS to do some retirement planning but couldn’t get in even with all the right info. I was worried someone stole my ID and created an account with my ID.

      • I have the same issue. My wallet was stolen a couple of years ago, and every so often, something weird happens. I am paranoid that this is another breech of my financial data.

    • Hello Martin. If you are having difficulties with your personal my Social Security account, please call 1-800-772-1213 for assistance. After you hear “Briefly tell me why you are calling,” say “Help Desk” for help with a my Social Security account. Thanks!

  9. I have tried twice to sign up for the online Social Security account and it rejects me. The questions are all screwed up. A few of them don’t apply to me at all. So frustrating. Where do they come up with these questions? I tried calling the published SS phone number and the recording said it was going to be a 1 HOUR and 15 minute wait!! What do people on cell phones do when the battery dies? I clicked on the Office Locator button and got an error screen when I entered my zip code. Where do I turn next? So frustrating and time wasted. I have to be enrolled in Medicare within the next 2 months and I can see it’s going to be a serious project……

  10. I was logged into my SS account and it required me to change my password. I did but then it told me I had to reenter it but it would not recognize it. I was stuck in a loop and it wouldn’t let me out so I exited it. How do I fix it so I can get into my account?

    • when asked for a new password do as instructed which includes reentering it exactly as the first one, if you dont, then you have to put in the new password inthe top box as well as the comfirmation box.try it

      • How do we know this isn’t a scam? I don’t trust things like this? I think everyone should check with SS on the # that is in the phone book. SS usuallly sends things in the mail not on email where if it isn’t a scam it could get picked up from someone not with SS.

      • Hello. I am deaf my name is patience Anderson my date is. October 25 1968 Please. Set up direct deposit. My account checking XXXX14 and Routing number XXXX13

        • Hi, Patience. For your security, we do not have access to private information in this venue. If you are already receiving Social Security retirement or disability benefits, you can create a mySocialSecurity account to start or change Direct Deposit online. You also can sign up at your bank, credit union, or savings and loan.

If you receive SSI benefits, and want to establish or update direct deposit information, please call our toll-free number at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778), Monday-Friday between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. Or you can contact your local office. We hope this helps.
Just a reminder – please be cautious about posting personal information on social media.

          • How can I be allowed to create an account on line on my social security Web it asked for last 8 credit card numbers and I put in my debit card now I can’t finish setting up new account

          • Hi Steven. When creating an account, you are only required to provide the last eight digits of your credit card number when you select the extra security option. Please call 1-800-772-1213 for assistance. After you hear “Briefly tell me why you are calling,” say “Help Desk” for help with a my Social Security account. Also, you can contact your local Social Security office directly and explain your situation. Thanks!

        • Patience, since anyone in the world can read this, why did you publish your personal information publicly for everybody to see? Not to be rude, but I’m guessing you have been a victim of identity theft before?

          • Like your screen name! ThinkB4Utype
Advice that could protect everyone if they followed it!

  11. The article was about setting up an account which supposedly would help to protect your ID. In looking at all the complaints it seems as if the web site works about as well as Obamacare.

  12. I learned through Equifax that my information was included in the recent security breech . I have contacted all 3 credit reporting companies but wonder what action I should take to secure my Social Security account and information? Do you have a “freeze” process? How should I hand,e this? So far my credit report is not showing any attempts to fraudulently access my accounts, just want to be sure I am protecting myself.
    Please advise. Thank you

  13. In light of the Equifax breach, what now would prevent a thief from calling any government office and pretending they are you? I have recently called to speak with a SS agent, and the typical questions they ask–Social Security #, birthdate, address, phone #, are all things that the Equifax thieves now have. PLEASE put in place some extra security measures, such as secret questions, PINs, or voice recognition so the telephone agent can verify the identity of the person who’s calling. Otherwise, our country will be in DEEP trouble if 143 million Americans, or 2/3 of all American adults, have their government and medical accounts compromised. THIS NEEDS TO BE DONE RIGHT AWAY!!!!

  14. I would go with Block Electronic Access. I don’t want anyone stealing my free disability money that I got for my mental disorder. As long as I get the free disability money every month in my bank account, I don’t need to check the My Social Security account.

  15. Why is the website not available 24 hours? I am trying to log into my account, but apparently it is “after hours.” That’s ridiculous to only be able to log in certain hours!

  16. I am a perm total service disabled vet I receive SSDI and VA support. Because I remained in Germany my last military assignment I can not use “Medicare” which I’ve paid into so long.
Moreover, because I’m receiving my Social Security benefits, which I paid into, I can not receive the full Federal Employees Retirement System (FERS) which I paid into. Additionally, because the government allowed me to pay into BOTH plans, and anyone needing money from there SAVINGS accounts, The Civilian Personnel Offices made the mistake, we get to pay for. I used both, now I have to pay BACK the FERS account, MY money I used (FERS). I am not the only one who had this problem.
The point is, Social Security is getting better and keeping up, I couldn’t do it with out them.
    Question;
    1. In the US & Germany agreements where there is lateral agreements with SSA and SSDI. Why can I not use the MEDICARE or other Social Security programs? Or, how can I use them?
    2. Federal Erroneous Retirement Coverage Correction Act (FERCCA): Agency Administrative Issues
    https://www.opm.gov/retirement-services/publications-forms/benefits-administration-letters/2004/04-106.pdf
It was not an error on my part, but my spouse will pay for it in Life Insurance used as collateral when I die. As a Service Disabled Vet can I get this revoked?
Everything is rotating around the Social Security Disability retirement benefits, which I never figured I would need.. can anything be done?

  17. I called the local Social Security office and asked the person if he would change my address and other information if someone called there with my information and he said “if they were convincing enough I would.” What good is all of this online security? Would blocking my SS number stop him from doing that?

  18. Will my son’s information and SSI account be ok in the end? I am an unemployed college student; I fear we may not be able to pay bills or get groceries next month if this issue isn’t resolved soon…

  19. Not sure how you can possibly verify someones identity online now that virtually everyones information has been stolen from Equifax. Criminals now have the same information that Equifax has. This is the information you are relying on to verify I am who I say I am. Moving forward I would think its best to force people to set up their initial online account in person at a Social Security Office with the proper documentation to prove they are who they say they are, and then allow them to choose a question only they would know the answer to (not something thats resides in one of the credit bureaus).

I just set up my online account but it looks to me like it would be very easy for a criminal to pose as me and change my address and phone number if they had the stolen Equifax data. This is very scary. I hope SSA is mindful of these possibilities and places strict requirements for changing address or phone or other personal data after an account is setup online.

An earlier suggestion makes sense, sending an email or text message to the original email and or text contained in the account as warning or confirmation would at least give some piece of mind to the account owner and let them know if they need to take action. Virtually every institution including my banks, credit cards and online accounts do this.

    • We understand your concern and appreciate your feedback, Tim. Social Security continues to evaluate and improve how we protect what’s important to you. We take this responsibility seriously, and we have a robust cybersecurity program in place to help protect the personal information you entrust to us. Adding additional security measures to safeguard your personal information — but making our services easy to use — is a vital part of keeping you safe and secure.
We recently added a second method to check your identification when you sign in to my Social Security. This is in addition to the first layer of security, your username and password. When you sign in, you will be able to choose either your cell phone or your email address as your second identification method. Using two ways to identify you when you log on will help better protect your account from unauthorized use and potential identity fraud. Thanks!

      • I really like the new 2-factor authentication; however, there is a problem with it. You can type a new e-mail address into the system to have the security code sent. So someone could have the code sent to an e-mail address that isn’t mine. The system should only use the phone number or e-mail that is already listed on the account.

  20. When singing up for the online account I was asked if I needed extra security. There is no explanation of what this extra security is, how it works or what happens after I apply for it. I received the letter with the number on it but I’m reluctant to enter the number because I don’t know what I am setting up. Can you explain what this is?

    • Thanks for your concern. If you select the extra security option, then you are required to provide additional information. Please see our Frequently Asked Questions web page in regards to Enhanced Security“. We hope this helps. If you need further assistance, please call our toll free number at 1-800-772-1213 and speak to one of our agents. Representatives are available Monday through Friday, between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m.

  28. Filling out the online form requests my social security number but it does not seem to be encrypted. Another words, the full number is displayed instead of astericks. Is this safe to do on your webpage? Most websites blockout the display of those important numbers. Why does your page not offer that sort of security?

    • Hi, Sandra. The Social Security Administration is committed to protect the public’s information when using our “.gov “ site. All of our online applications use an identity verification process to protect the privacy of your identity and your Social Security information. Our links are legitimate and trustworthy. 29. Your site says to set-up a “my social security” account. But guess what; if you locked your credit score like about 143million people did over the last week, YOU CAN’T SET UP AN ACCOUNT, because the SS Administration uses Equifax to check your earnings history!
I also got the website errors and the 1800 number didn’t work the first few times I called it…..sad service.

    • Hi Chuck! Although we sometimes use Equifax to help verify your identity when setting up a my Social Security account, Social Security never shares Social Security numbers with Equifax. Please see our Frequently Asked Questions web page to learn more about this topic. For concerns regarding the Equifax data breach, please contact Equifax directly at 866-447-7559 or http://www.equifaxsecurity2017.com/. Thanks.

    • Thanks for your question. The earliest age you can get Retirement Benefits is 62. However, if you choose to get benefits before your full retirement age, they will be reduced.
Your full retirement age is determined by your year of birth. You can check out our Retirement Planner: Benefits By Year Of Birth to understand why some people have different full retirement ages and what those ages are.
You can create a my Social Security account to review estimates of your retirement, disability, and survivors benefits, your earnings record, and the estimated Social Security and Medicare taxes you’ve paid. Our system is set up to take applications three months in advance. You can call our toll free number at 1-800-772-1213 to make an appointment with your local Social Security office. An appointment is not required, but if you call ahead and schedule one, it may reduce the time you spend waiting, it also establishes a protective filing date. However, you can right now complete the online application for your Social Security retirement benefits in as little as 15 minutes. It’s so easy, you can apply from the comfort of your home or office at a time most convenient for you. Representatives at our toll-free number are available Monday through Friday, between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. They can assist you with your application online. • Hi, Marisol. Individuals can still work and receive their Social Security retirement benefits at the same time. However, if they are younger than full retirement age and make more than the yearly earnings limit, we will reduce their benefit. 37. My elderly mother doesn’t have a computer so she can’t set up a mySocialSecurity online account. Is there a non-electronic way to protect her SSN?

    • Social Security takes protecting the public’s personal information very seriously. To protect your privacy and your Social Security information, our representatives are required to use an identity verification process when providing services to beneficiaries and the general public. The Privacy Act prohibits Federal agencies from disclosing personal information without the person’s consent, except under certain conditions. Please visit our Privacy Program web page for more information. Thanks.

  38. I lost my 8 digit reentry code. I tried to get it online but alas it is not there. I called 1-800-772-1213 and they could not find it either. Is there anything to do to get that number so I do not have to call to get access online. It sort of defeats the purpose to save time if I have to wait on que on a phone to save time on a computer. What do I do on off hours when no one it there to answer the phone. As you know the wait imes are long as the amount of service help is low and a bit deficient. The automatic system is jus frustrating.

  39. I do not remember my logon information from a few years ago. However, the email address I associated with my social security online account has been compromised. I do not want information to go there. How can I find my logon information without using the compromised email address associated with my account? Is there a way to switch to my work email without known my logon information?

    • We have established a dedicated (My Social Security) Hotline. If you need assistance, please call 1-800-772-1213. Sometimes, it might be best to visit your local Social Security office for further assistance.

  40. Has anyone on this Blog recently received emails that a Social Security was made on their account? I have and I am concerned it’s a scam. Trying to get thru to SSA but have been on hold for over 15 minutes 2 days in a row.

  41. My husband and I both attempted to Create an account and was asked credit questions that neither one of us recognized. We do not have car loans or credit cards that were listed. SSA would not let us move forward with the Create mode. Do we need to go to SSA and dispute this?

    • We apologize for the inconvenience. We have established a dedicated My Social Security – Hotline to assist customers with access to their personal account. Please call 1-800-772-1213 for assistance. After you hear “Briefly tell me why you are calling,” say “Help Desk” for help with a my Social Security account. 42. How can I request a paper SS statement, without online access/account? Not yet close to age 60 to automatically receive the paper statement.

  43. I am abroad with my husband who is working. I managed to freeze my Equifax account. Do I have to travel to Dublin to establish My Social Security account? It’s very expensive to call the help desk number when I’m not sure they can help me from here.
Thank you. I’m really at a loss for what to do from Europe.

    • Thank you for contacting us, Juanita. The “my Social Security” authentication system requires address verification as one of the essential criteria for issuing an account. People with APO/FPO/DPO addresses can create an account overseas, but our system does not support registration and account creation for users with a foreign address yet. However, you do not need a U.S. address to access our website or to file online for benefits. Please contact your local U.S. embassy or consulate for any assistance related to your Social Security benefits. Also, our Office of International Operations home page provides more information to assist our customers living abroad. We hope this information helps.

  44. I am a victim of identity fraud, I am receiving calls from creditors asking me to pay back loans I did not take. I have bank accounts open in my name which has since been closed, as well as credit cards. I received a weird e-mail and phone call asking me to pay or else I will go to jail. I have reported it to identitythef.gov, file a police report and reported to the 3 credit bureaus. However I am still concern this will continue to occur, I want to know how I can get a new social security number? We are in the process of purchasing a new home soon and this could harm us, I am government employee and work really hard, I never had any issues like this before. However this all started with my husband about 6 years ago now its happening to me, when we file our taxes IRS had to give us a special number to prove our identity, because someone had already file taxes using my husbands number. We had to change our phone numbers because we got calls day and night from all over claiming we owe them. We change e-mail address, I’m in the process of changing my cell number, I even got a call at work. This is really scaring me, is there a way my SS number can be change?

  45. Hi, I am 19yr American Citizen living outside the US for sometime now. When My SS card was issued and sent to the address we were living, we had already moved, and I never got the card (I was a toddler then). Even until now, my relatives never sent my card , and have a negative attitude whenever my mom would ask for it. I do not know what I should do – whether to try to get it from them, or to apply for a replacement one. What benefits are available to me if I am living outside the US ? Also how can I lock my SS number from outside the US ? Thank you

  46. I can not create an my social security web account because it states that it can not validate my information. What do I need to do to get this fixed?

    • Hello Drew.

  47. My name is Kate and I am the the POA and Guardian for my brother, Michael. I need some information regarding applying for additional benefits for him and I would like to set up an online account. He would not be able to do this on his own, and it would make my live a bit easier. If I set up an appointment at my local office, does my brother have to come with me? I could bring proof that I am his Guardian or whatever documents are necessary.

    • Hi Kate. You can only create a my Social Security account using your own personal information and for your own exclusive use. You cannot create or use an account on behalf of another person, even if you have that person’s written permission.
Please note that having a “Power of Attorney” does not give you legal authority to manage payments for someone receiving Social Security or SSI benefits. If your brother needs help managing his benefits, you may be interested in applying to become his representative payee. As a representative payee, you will have access to your brother’s records and the ability to update his account information. A face-to-face interview is required when applying to be someone’s representative payee. If your brother cannot be present, a statement from his doctor would be helpful. The statement should say that your brother is not able to -mentally and physically- manage his Social Security benefits and identify you as the person responsible to keep his finances in order.
Please read our publication: A Guide For Representative Payees for more information. If you have specific questions, or to make an appointment with the local Social Security office, please call 1-800-772-1213 Monday through Friday, between 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and speak to one of our representatives. Generally, you’ll have a shorter wait time if you call later in the week. Thanks

  48. I NEED TO SET UP MY ACCOUNT, BUT YOU SYSTEM COULD NOT VERIFY ME. IT ASKED ABOUT MORTGAGE AND LEASE INFO THAT I HAVE NEVER HAD AND IT LOCKED ME OUT. I HAVE MOVED AND I NEED TO UPDATE MY MAILING ADDRESS.

    • We apologize for any inconvenience, Lora. Please call 1-800-772-1213 for assistance. • So much issue that’s been made regarding posting private personal information on public sites I do not understand why people still do it. Perhaps a way to block a comment that includes private information would be a necessary security method for people who do not think when they just publicly display their private information–then we hear the whining about somebody that had their info stolen. They actually gave it away freely thinking that nobody else can see what they typed. Security needs to be better for people like that, maybe banning them for their own good.

  49. My S.S. card, Medicare card, birth certificate, credit card, supermarket check cashing card, ATM card, free Safelink Wireless telephone, driver’s license, library card, were all stolen twice. Once on 11/1/11 in Westerly, Rhode Island and once in Norwalk, CT 06853-1240in 2007, 2011 and 2017 several different people learned my name/ss #, date of birth, unpublished telephone number, place of birth, address, and medical information. I cannot obtain annual credit histories from any credit companies. I cannot order anything online from any company. I cannot obtain social services or even open a social security account because I am always told: Your name and social security number do not match. You address does not match. You home, landline telephone number does not match your name or address or social security number. I want to change my social security number due to people impersonating me in Connecticut, New Hampshire, Massachusetts and any one connected with Stony Brook University in 2007.

  52. I filed for disability last week and I looked up my account and it says they are processing it. I went to Kaiser because I was told I was supposed to go through them and they take care of the process but I already filed it. They said they needed a R1000000 number? Said I would have gotten it when I filed? I can’t find this number anywhere. Can you help me?

If the icon is open or anything other than locked you are not secure.

  55. I hear so much about this and that about SS. So now I’ll ask, when I contracted MS I had to quit my job. I was winding down and the supervisor was not the most sympathetic. I talked to one of my doctors as to how will I fill my time. As long as I was safe health wise to choose what I wished for, that was a college education it was a DISASTER!! Being that I’m on much reduced means of living and I’m not as sharp as I once was. I can accept that. The point is I have total forgiveness from my prior college and I’m very grateful for this. But now an opportunity to get a GRANT and be trained for Medical Billing and Coding I will be trained at a university for 4 month versus 4 years college education. The upside for me is that I can work from home a situation perfect for me. Please write me as soon at your earliest convenience so I can be advised as how to approach this wonderful opportunity. Thank-you. Sincerely and Respectfully

  56. I still have a problem with your sign in ? I get to the part about the code thru Email . I have go the Email list . then I try to sign in I can’t get pass the User name & password? Text or Email. I’m a computer illiterate.

I kept trying and was finally able to sign in yesterday, always using my same User Name and Password. Again, today, it will not recognize my User Name and Password. • If you put your Social Security Number on a public forum or other social media you can certainly expect someone will take it. You are simply making it easier for those who have no honor. Don’t enter ANY private information on a public forum. Your real name, address, phone number, bank account numbers, social security number, credit card numbers—they are called PRIVATE for a reason. Don’t post them on any platform that is open to the public.

  67. I have tried to get a temporary password for my account for over 2 months. They said it would take 10 days. I can’t get into my account I have tried calling social security and the wait is ridiculous.. so please could you send me one

    • We are sorry to hear that you are having difficulty reaching someone by phone. We are experiencing higher than normal call volume. Representatives are available between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m., Monday through Friday but generally it’s best if you call later in the day.

  68. It is 7:40 in the morning 11/9 and I have been trying to call. What time zone are the call centers in, because I am getting nothing but the automated system telling me to call between 7am. and 7pm.? I tried to create an account last night and the system would not let me. It said I had to call to find out what was wrong.

Also, correct the website where it says your call center is open later than 7pm.

    Thanks,
    Mary Stacey

  69. I attempted to open a My Account with Social Security. I entered my first name, middle initial and last name. I entered my Social Security number. Both as on my Social Security Card reflected. I then entered my birth date (month, day and year).

I was advised by the site that they could not identify me with that information. I attempted it a total of 3 times inputing the correct information each time. I tried one more time and was advised that I had been refused 3 times and I was now locked out.

This is not a customer friendly situation and it should possibly be checked for these types of probably be checked for a problem.

  70. If I know that my Mother is dead and, I wonder if the death of my Farther would have any bearing on me at this point in time how would I find out?

  71. I support the protection, but if a login step is forgotten, having to wait days or weeks for a special code in a letter that must be delivered by USPS is more a form of punishment and sabotage rather than a nifty way of keeping hooligans out of the identity theft business. If something is forgotten, allow the my social security user a few minutes to prove they are the real deal and let them quickly and without delay continue to access their personal information and get on with their lives.

  72. I lost my wallet which has SSN card, driver license, bank card, insurance card etc. Please advise. I called your office multiple times but always on hold and could not report that was lost 😭. I filed with police

  73. All mailings be it from Social Security related correspondence or end of year earnings from employer, bank, investment firms, etc. should NOT print your social security number on the forms. We have a terrible mail delivery person who is always putting the wrong mail in the wrong mailbox. This opens one to identity thief when in the wrong hands. Please stop printing our social security numbers on forms mailed to us!

  74. You all are so caring to so many people. I applaud you all for the work you put in protecting others.. So will you send me the link to sign up to protect my Social Security number?
    Thank You

I had my personal computer hacked about 2 and 1/2 week ago. Because of that I have had to change all ID’s and passwords. • Hi Clifford. You can speak to a Social Security representative for help with a my Social Security account between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 12:00 midnight Eastern Time, Monday through Friday. Toll-free: 1-800-772-1213 After you hear “Briefly tell me why you are calling,” please say “Help Desk” for help with a my Social Security account. Thanks!

  79. I just tried to set-up a “My Social Security Account”. I was told that this could not be done online because I have a freeze on my credit reports. Instead, I will have to travel to a social security office. I think it is outrageous that the SS system depends on information from my credit reports. If the system needs to have additional security questions, it should make them up as does every other account that I have.

    • It uses information from your credit report like addresses in the past, mortgage info, streets you have lived on in the past. If you cannot answer those questions correctly your account cannot be set up because it appears that someone who is not you is trying to access your information. When you placed a freeze on your account SS cannot put those specific identity question to you because it cannot access the information. It is a very good security measure. The questions are past personal info that generally can only be answered by the right person. It is not what questions you want in case you lose your password or to use a strange computer verification. Take the freeze off your account temporarily to create your myssa account, then put the freeze back on, once you have set up your account it doesn’t ask again for identity verification. Your password and log in name and entering your second layer of protection code will be all your need to login to your account after you’ve created it.

    • Hi Elizabeth. If you get Social Security benefits (retirement, survivors, or disability) or are enrolled in Medicare, you can change your address online by using a my Social Security account. If you do not receive Social Security benefits, SSI or Medicare, you do not need to change your address with us.
Just a reminder – please be cautious about posting personal information on social media. We hope this helps!

    • Hi Susan, we prefer a government issued document with your picture, as proof of identity to replace your Social Security card. If you do not have one or you cannot get one within a reasonable amount of time, we may be able to use other documents such as:
      •Employee identification card;
      •School identification card;
      •Health insurance card; or
      •U.S. military identification card.
Any document you submit, must be an original or certified copy, current (not expired) and show your name, and other identifying information (date of birth or age).
Also, realize that you may not need a replacement card. You will rarely need to show it. Knowing your Social Security number is what is important. To see if you’re eligible to apply for a replacement Social Security card online or to learn more on the process and what documents you will need to get a card, please visit our “New or Replacement Social Security Number and Card” web page. To learn more about the steps individuals can take to prevent or resolve issues of identity theft, read our publication: “Identity Theft and Your Social Security Number”. We hope this helps.

  85. 1.Many of the links don’t work on your site.
    2. I can’t open an online account because SSA doesn’t recognize the info on my SS card.
    3. The people at the number the site gives to call to fix No.2 say they don’t deal with that problem and to call another number.
    3. The people at the other number say to call the people at the 1st number or to visit the SS office.
    4. Every time I visited the SS office in Rosilindale in October, there was at least a 5 hour wait.
    6. I wrote a letter to SSA requesting a hard copy of my statement. They sent me a letter with someone else’s SS number on it telling me that my info doesn’t match SSA’s info.
    7. Equifax notified me that my info has been compromised and that I need to secure my SS account. Given that no matter how I contact you, there seems to be a determined effort by SSA not to be of any help.
I’m curious; what would you do?

  86. Still can’t open account. Been 2 months trying.
You have an ID fraud epidemic that you don’t take seriously.

  92. Wow, what a deal, we establish a fraud alert for protection on our credit report, and it keeps us from getting an online SS account. We can send a man to the moon, but can’t solve this.

  93. I’m having a problem signing on to my account. When I get a security code sent to my email address, I don’t know where the field is to enter that security code. Maybe I’m doing something incorrectly and need more instructions. Thanks

    • Hi Wanda, please call 1-800-772-1213 for assistance. After you hear “Briefly tell me why you are calling,” say “Help Desk” for help with a my Social Security account. Thanks!

  94. I have lost my passport and social security card.

    Thanks

  95. I’m still waiting for a reply concerning entering the security code given via email, where is the field to enter the code given?

  96. Someone called me at 6pm saying they were Social Security but started asking me the wrong questions. I believed the caller to be a scammer out fishing and told him so. The phone number was (484)464-4012. If it is really you sorry ’bout the language, someone is messing with me and I hope that’s their phone number.

  97. I tried to sign up for MySocialSecurity account yesterday. After filling the required info I came to a page that ask questions about my credit. The answers I had to choose from were not correct and that is what I answered. When I submitted the form it said my credit was locked. What is going on?

    • Thank you for using our online services, Mike! Please call 1-800-772-1213 for assistance. After you hear “Briefly tell me why you are calling,” say “Help Desk” for help with a my Social Security account.

    • Actually there is only one correct answer to each question. Either it is an address you used any time in the pasts, who you once had a mortgage from, and questions such as that. That information comes directly from your credit report who also has the information listed from the past about you. You need to select the correct answer, if none are correct you select “none of these”. If you fail to identify the correct answer, you will be blocked as the program will determine fraud.

  98. I tried to access my social security page but it was not accepted-my phone number may be different than when I applied, would this cause the problem?

    • Hello Pamela, if you are having difficulties creating your personal my Social Security account, please call 1-800-772-1213 for assistance. After you hear “Briefly tell me why you are calling,” say “Help Desk” for help with a my Social Security account. Thanks!

  99. Ever since the Equifax data breach I have been blocked from accessing mySSA online. I am aware that my information was compromised in that breach but do not understand why I am always getting the “We tried three times to verify your information…” when it never even attempted to do so a single time. I clicked on the Forgot Password and that is the screen it went to immediately. A second attempt brought the personal information screen and after entering all the correct information the same “We tried three times…” error message was displayed. I think there is a serious issue with your supposedly “robust cyber-security program” as it is constantly unable to verify known correct information and blocks access. As my son (a black hat with a BSCIS degree) put it, the fact that it displays a message implying three failed attempts to verify entered info when all that was clicked was “Forgot Password” indicates that the site and servers have likely already been compromised or it is just very poorly coded with a serious glitch.

    • We apologize for any inconveniences, Jane. Please call 1-800-772-1213 for assistance. After you hear “Briefly tell me why you are calling,” say “Help Desk” for help with a my Social Security account. Sometimes, it might be best to visit your local Social Security office for further assistance. Thank you for using our online services!

  112. My name is Leslie Maureen Crowder Brown. My social security number is *** – ** – ***. Date of birth is September 12, 1945. I was born in San Diego Naval Hospital. My parents were Norman and Katherine Chase Crowder. Both mow deceased.
I retired in 2010 after working for Johnson & Johnson for almost 28 years.
I have been a victim of identity theft for the past six years. The hackers are my daughter and her husband. Amy Eliabeth Bornstein and her husband Shawn Bornstein. They live in Chattanooga Tenneessee off of Hwy. 58 just down the street from Booker T. Washington Park.

As a result. of the fraud I had a massive heart attack October 1, 2017. All my teeth have fallen out and my hair comes out by the handful in the shower from the stress they cause. He is a professional hacker. Spends 14 to 18 hours a day on the computer hacking into people’s bank accounts.
The stress of my situation caused my attorney to drop dead of a heart attack at the age of 44. He filed formal complaints with the FBI, TBI and the FTC reporting this criminal activity prior to his death. Not heard from anyone back and the illegal activity is still going on.
What do I need to do to protect my hard earned income from these thieves? I’m at wits end with stress.
Please advise me. Here is my contact information:

You can find more information on their website: http://www.idtheft.gov or by calling 1-877-IDTHEFT (1-877-438-4338). If you suspect or know of someone committing fraud against Social Security, we ask you to report it. Allegations of fraud are reported to our Office of the Inspector General.

  113. I am still working and will retire in March of 2018. I am full retirement age and have been getting benefit for a year or so..
Can I sign up for Medicare on line?
I will have full medical from the VA.

    • Hi Patrick. With our online application, you can sign up for Medicare Part A (Hospital Insurance) and Part B (Medical Insurance).
Generally, -if you already get Social Security benefits- we automatically enroll you in Medicare Hospital Insurance (Part A) and Medical Insurance (Part B). However, if you’re actively working and you are covered under your employer’s group health insurance program, you can delay enrollment into Medicare Part B until you stop working or the health coverage is dropped.
We suggest that individuals speak to their health benefits advisor, or health plan representative to see what’s best for them, and to prevent any penalties or delayed enrollment in the future. Also, if you have coverage under a program from the Department of Defense, your health benefits may change or end when you become eligible for Medicare. You should contact the Department of Defense or a military health benefits advisor for information on whether you need to be enrolled in Medicare medical insurance (Part B).
To learn more visit http://www.Medicare.gov. For specific questions about your case, call 1-800-772-1213, M-F between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. and ask a representative to assist you, or you can contact your local Social Security office directly. Hope this helps!

  114. I tried to set up a new account. but when I got to the end of questions and contact information a pop up showed as follows:

  115. My social security is being posted on the internet without my permission
I also receive Medicare and these people are also putting that on the internet without my permission. Plus these two people are putting my picture on the internet without my permission. Is there anything you can do to help me with this.

  116. How do you compute the 2.0% for the increase? I multiplied 2.0% by my previous monthly amount and got a completely new monthly number.

    • MY amount is exactly the same after the raise. But, look at Medicare premium and see if that changed. That is where my complete raise went to.

  117. My Chase Bank in Santa Monica has NEVER oyt my S,S, and treasury in a seperate area even though it was direct deposit. I have told them about the rule 5 times.. When I saw $6500. come in one month, I almost got sick, For now any vendor can touch it. IF IT IS A LAW, what can you do to help me redeem it. I joined a new bank last week. But my S.S. is gone, and there are 2 frauds. Any way you can help me or do I need to get a lawyer. I was ahead $25000, now I am minus $8000. Then they closed my two accounts. using my money at least 10 times without my authority for the charge card, $3000 that another Chase bank thought they helped me with, and they did NOTHING about a $1000. fraud check. I filed a police report. I have to pay people back for I had broken my right hand….9 bones….and feel on my back. IS THERE ANY WAY TO GET MY MONEY BACK? They also had the nerve to call business that I go to, and ask for their money back. Please advise me. We got to be near $6000. Susan Paulus Please contact me as soon as possible. I need money to live on. And they broke the law numerous times.

    • The bank information that you gave to SSA is where they will deposit your benefits. Chase Bank does not decide where to deposit the funds nor does it just hide the funds for you. You need to make sure your correct banking information is filed with social security.

    • Hi Jane, we are sorry to hear that your application for disability benefits did not go the way you had hoped. Social Security wants to be sure that the decision made about your disability claim is correct. If you do not agree with our decision, you have the right to file an appeal. You must make a request within 60 days from the date you received your notice of denial. For more information on the appeals process, please visit our Appeal Processing publication on our website. We hope this helps !

  118. I need information about applying for my divorced spouses Social Security benefits. I was married for over 26 years and am now 69. My spouse and I have been divorced for 23 years..Do I qualify for any of her SS benefits. She is a college graduate and retired from teaching. I suspect she made more money than I did and is therefore receiving more SS monthly income. I supported her and paid her expenses thru her completion of college. Do I qualify???

  119. Do I qualify for some of my ex-wife’s SS monthly benefits.
We were married for over 26 years and are both 69 years now. She has re-married..I have not. I supported her through her completion of college.

    • Thank you for your question, Richard. If your marriage lasted 10 years or longer, you may receive benefits on your ex-spouse’s record, even if they have remarried. Please keep in mind, if you qualify for retirement benefits on your own record and divorced spouse’s benefits, we pay the retirement benefit first. If the benefit on your ex-spouse’s record is higher, you will get an additional amount on your ex-spouse’s record so that the combination of benefits equals that higher amount. To see if you qualify for a higher benefit than what you are currently receiving, contact a Social Security representative. Please call our toll free telephone number at 1-800-772-1213, Monday through Friday between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m.
See our Retirement Planner: If You’re Divorced for other eligibility requirements and more detailed information. Thanks!

  120. Our checking account was hacked so we had to open a new one. The old one will be open for a little more time. How do I change the direct deposit information for the new account for my husband and me?

    • Hi Mary, you have to apply for a replacement Social Security card. Please realize that you may not need a replacement card. You will rarely need to show it. 136. Received my Social Security Retirement Benefit today.
Why was only $384.00 Deposited in my account?
I am supposed to get $786.00 which includes the 2.0% increase. I received my statement for 2018 in 2017 and it states on their that I will receive a 2.0% increase and my 2018 benefit amount will be $786.00 per month.
    What is going on?
Why can’t I talk to a person when I call the toll free national number? Why do I get only a recording and then it hangs up? What is Social Security Administrations problem?
Why are you denying people their benefit amount?
Why don’t taxpayers have accessibility to call and/or E-mail Social Security Administration?
Where is this open government? All I see is non-open government and more like closed off government!

  137. Hi! I’m Kelly Sparks. I live in Johnson City, Tennessee. My civic duty is to tell all the services about a person who changed his name and forged fake documents. We know a man who has lived in Erwin, Tennessee, for more than a year, initially called himself Walter Shkrobut, born on May 24, 1960 In Ukraine. He lived in Chicago, Illinois, until 2012. He then lived at Union Pier, Michigan, and in 2016, he came to Erwin, Tennessee. He settled in a suspicious face of Deena Armstrong. I know that she had problems with alcohol and drugs. Recently met them at Johnson City. They made a loan in a bank. This was told to me by a relative of Deena Armstrong, who came from Erwin. His name is William Valdez. He told that Walter Shkrobut had problems obtaining US citizenship, driver’s license and he had no money. Problems with Walter’s documents began because he had 9 arrests in Chicago because of the beating of women and the image of a policeman. Not finding a way to get credit and documents, Walter Shkrobut fake documents with Deena Armstrong and her cousin William Valdez. He made changes to the name and fingerprints of the computer system, he told me about this, and I was able to get from the child a photo of Walter Shkrobut real documents – this is an old Green Card and a new one with fingerprints. William Valdez did not name his fake name Walter, the only thing he said was picking and adding letters. It may be like Walter Hkrobut, or Walter Chkrobout. Its true SSN ***-**-****. But I suspect that Walter Shkrobut uses someone else’s stolen SSN. I send you a copy of his Green Card. I hope my letter will save an innocent person whose name and social number is used by the nonsense person Walter Shkrobut to receive loans and social benefits.

    • Hello Marcus. The Social Security Administration (SSA) does not issue Credit Privacy Number or CPNs. Also, keep in mind that a Credit Privacy Number or CPN is not a substitution for a social security or tax id number. Thanks!

  142. The programming for Online access is the most annoying, poorly configured imaginable. My access was blocked again today (after being blocked i September 2017). I changed my USERID PASSWORD at that time, and accessed the site using this information on October 15, 2017. Today I was blocked again and denied access for 24 hours after three tries using the same, updated information (very carefully typed and checked).

Just what we should expect from the Federal government. If someone is trying to hack into my account with random input, three tries will not cut it. Find out how many legitimate attempts at SIGNIN are thwarted versus how many hacks are stopped at three tries. You are blocking American taxpayers from their info. In the words of the Donald, BAD!

  143. I had someone call me today indicating they were from the social security office, they had my name, address and birth date. I told them that social security does not call, they send letters. I’m concerned with this. Please advise.

  144. I have not logged in for a few years and cannot remember my login information. Please help…
The prompts on this website are not helpful.

    • Hi Kathleen, please call 1-800-772-1213 for assistance. After you hear “Briefly tell me why you are calling,” say “Help Desk” for help with a my Social Security account. Thanks!

  145. I am collecting my social security, I recently read I could collect on my ex’s SS. We were married for 13 years I never remarried. Can I still apply to receive part of his social security?

  146. Iam so dumb. I got on a telephone call tosomeone who said I could get my medicines thru the mail. It was a medical house company.I gave them info about everything even the last four digits of my s.s.card. They hung up on me and I’m afraid they will use my number to get other things like pills or meds or even in my checking acc. How do i get free of thisproblem….

  147. Please consider changing not being able to create an account while having a credit freeze/fraud alert. Why eliminate my option to monitor social security activity only because I dont want my credit abused? Please dont direct me to FAQ page, it only says what I know, it cannot be done. Not why. What does one have to do with the other? Especially with all the data breaches lately. Now I must put a internet block on social security account, when I would have preferred to monitor myself for inappropriate use. Please reconsider this limitation. I doubt I am the only one with their credit frozen that desire an account.

  148. This morning, I checked the email from apple that I bought some app for about $70 that I never bought. So I pressed the cancel button and followed the instructions and it asked ssn and card info.
I already put all the info and realized it is something weird.

A few hours later husband got an email that weird transaction had been makd at UK, because my husband is the primary card holder.
My card company didn’t authorized it but I’m worried about the SSN that I put this morning on the weired site together with the card number.

After My husband got the transaction allert, I checked the apple email and it turned out some kind of Fraud site.

I’m so worried if my Ssn has been hacked someone..

    What should I do?

It’s been already almost 12 hours has been passed I put my Ssn on that fruad site and I just opened my social account hoping it is helpful.

  149. I have not received my information about 2018 benefits, our new mailind address is 10815 w Sun City Blvd Sun City AZ,

  150. I tried to use the my social security on-line services and apparently did not answer the security questions correctly so I can’t register for these services. I was told the questions are provided by Equifax so I contacted them to find out what the problem was and gave them more information then I should have and received no answer to my questions. Not sure how to check to see if my information is now tainted but If social security wants to go green they need to find a better way!

  152. We ask for help. This man is wanted by family !!! White man – Walter Shkrobut (Volodymyr Shkrobut). This is his real name. His real SSN A # ***-**-****. He is Ukrainian. Born on May 24, 1960 in Ukraine. He has been living in Chicago by 2011. Then until 2016, he lived at the Union Pier, Michigan, with Lida Marta Ruzhitska. After her death, he was expelled from home and went to Erwin, Tennessee. He came there with a woman named Deena Lynette Armstrong, born October 10, 1968. Walter had problems with the psyche. He had an incident with a police officer and an immigration officer. He was suspected of terrorism. In the fall of 2016, a decision was made to deport him. To prevent the deportation, Deena Armstrong told the police that Walter had left her and flew to Ukraine. The truth was that she hid Walter until the spring of 2017. After that she bought him fake documents. Walter is not capable of committing a crime. He has a weak will and psyche. Walter knows English badly. Deena Armstrong used it. She manipulated it. Psychologically pressured him and intimidated him. Forbade Walter to communicate with his family. It qualifies as human abduction. Deena forced Walter with counterfeit documents to get a bank loan and social payments. By the fall of 2017, they have been living in Erwin, TN. On Boz 1211. Now they moved to another place. This may be Flagstaff, or another city in the Unica County. Homeland will ask to find this man. I’m attaching photos that will help identify these people. This information was transmitted to Chicago, New Buffalo, Johnson City, Nashville and Erwin Police Department. Walter Schrubut has problems with the psyche. He became a victim of the scammer of Deena Armstrong. His phone number is 7738169121 does not answer, or it is answered by strangers. Phone number if Deena 2693697087. We ask you again, everyone who can help with this search.

  156. I have had the same Social Security for all of my life. Now when on-line and asked for the last four numbers of my Social Security Number, the site tells me that the last four numbers I put in, over and over, that my Social Security numbers are incorrect? Why is this happening, is this Identity Theft? A month ago I went to the Soc. Security Office for Summit, IL., and all I got were some web-sites to call, not much help. Please tell me how to fix this.

  159. Due to unwelcommed cell phone solicitation I have become concerned about cyber-crime. I hope that this issue will be investigated and a proper action will be taken to discourage this kind of fraud.

  160. I TRIED TO SIGN IN TO MY ELECTRONIC ACCOUNT AND MY PASSWORD HAS BEEN CHANGED. NOW I’M LOCKED OUT…HOW DO I FIXED THIS?

  161. My SS account has been compromised based on a letter I received from SS dated Jan. 5, 2018. I spoke with a rep at the local SS office and she said it had been reported as fraud. I wanted to go online to my statement which I set up in in 2012 with an email and password and security questions. I have tried numerous times to log in to my account and every time it says cannot access with information provided. I attempted to set up a new account and it says there is already an account with that SS number. Please advise how I can log on to my account or what number I need to call to get instructions. I do not receive SS and cannot due to the fact that I retired as an educator in Texas, so there is no money for whoever filed a claim on account in December 2017, but I want to block access and cannot do it if I cannot log in to my account. Thanks for your help.

  162. I need help. My husband and my social security was given to someone else. Online application, online signature, deposited to an online bank. This is a nightmare. I still work so visiting my local office takes a half day from work. It takes at least an hour on the phone to get help. I have written letters and get no reply.

The two biggest problems at this time are:
    1. Social security issued my husband and I new Medicare cards that are based on us being retired. We are not retired and we did not apply for social security.. We need new social security cards indicating that we are not retired.

    2. I received a 1099 for the funds that were given to someone else. What do I do about that? I don’t want to pay taxes on those funds as I did not receive them.

    3. Is there a direct phone number for people who have had their social security scammed? Waiting an hour on the phone is ridiculous.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!!!

    • Hi! We prefer a government issued document with your picture, as proof of identity to replace your Social Security card. If you do not have one or you cannot get one within a reasonable amount of time, we may be able to use other documents such as:
      •Employee identification card;
      •School identification card;
To see if you’re eligible to apply for a replacement Social Security card online or to learn more on the process and what documents you will need to get a card, please visit our “Social Security Number and Card” web page. • Hello Beverly. Keep in mind that Social Security benefits are paid the month after they are due. For example, if the person dies in December, you must return the benefit paid in January. Generally, the banks will automatically return any funds received for the month of death or later. However, some of the deceased’s family members may be eligible to receive survivors benefits. You cannot report a death or apply for survivors benefits online.
Unfortunately, and because of security reasons we do not have access to personal records in this blog and cannot provide an explanation.
Please call our toll free number at 1-800-772-1213 for assistance. Representatives are available Monday through Friday, between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m.
Generally, you will have a shorter wait time if you call later during the day or later in the week. Thanks.

  218. I’ve always been told that I should not give out my Social Security number to anyone. I recently tried to apply for a credit card and was told that Federal regulations required my SS#. Is this true, and if so, what exactly is that regulation?
Thank you in advance for clearing this up.

    • Great question, Kathryn. Anyone can refuse to disclose his or her Social Security number, but the requester can refuse its services if you do not give it. Businesses, banks, schools, private agencies, etc., are free to request someone’s number and use it for any purpose that does not violate a federal or state law. Sometimes they will issue a different number if you ask.
See “Protecting Your Social Security” for more information. Thanks!

  219. I am trying to get to a section where I can find out why my social security has been reduced recently about $350 to $400 less per month? I have been living below poverty level, but now its at the bottom of below poverty level. I cannot make it from month to month at less than what I was getting. I still have rent, I have to pay half of electricity, heat, phone, and I have to help pay for logs to heat along with fuel oil for heating! What section can I do this in? to whom can I refer to about this situation? What can I do?

  223. I was informed that I can register for social security benefits on my 64.5 birthday, as an intent to receive benefits later. Can this b done on line? Or do I have to go to a SS office?

    • Hello Lonnie! Our system is set up to take applications three months in advance and your payments are established almost immediately after we process your application.
You may start receiving Social Security Retirement Benefits as early as age 62 or as late as age 70. However, if you decide to get benefits before your full retirement age, your benefits will be reduced.
When ready, you can apply for your benefits online at any time now.
Remember that benefits are paid the month after they are due. So, for instance, if you want your benefits to begin with the month of April, you will receive your first benefit payment in May.
Individuals who are 65 or older and not ready to start their monthly cash benefits yet, can sign up for Medicare ONLY and apply for their retirement benefits later. We hope this information helps!
