My daughter had her baby in 2020 and she doesn’t know if the social worker at the hospital put in papers for a social security number. How can we find out if a number was already provided and get an original SS card.

    • Vonda

Hi Darlene, thanks for using our blog. Your daughter can call her local Social Security office. Please look for the general inquiry telephone number at the Social Security Office Locator. The number may appear under Show Additional Office Information. Please be aware that our call wait times are longer than normal. We hope this information helps.

I need a replacement SS card.. I live in NH and our office is closed so only option is mailing in. For replacement cards they require you provide documents however they want originals and NOT copies. I am not providing my original license in mail to the office. What options are being put in place you have limited office contacts?

    • Sue

Hi, Sherry, and thanks for using our blog. First, realize you may not need a replacement card. You will rarely need to show it. Knowing your Social Security number is what’s important. Second, you can call your local office and request that we mail you an SSN printout instead of a replacement Social Security card. For more information about replacement cards, see our Social Security and Coronavirus webpage. We hope this helps.

Hi, James, and thanks for using our blog and your my Social Security account. Unfortunately, you cannot print a copy of your Social Security card using your my Social Security account. Knowing your Social Security number is what’s important. You can call your local office and request that we mail you an SSN printout. We hope this helps.

    • Vonda

Hi Vicki, thanks for using our blog. Generally, identity theft issues are handled by the Federal Trade Commission. Visit http://www.identitytheft.gov to report identity theft and get a recovery plan or call 1-877-IDTHEFT (1-877-438-4338).

Visit our Frequently Asked Questions web page for details on what you can do if you think someone is using your Social Security number.

I’m a naturalized citizen how can I change my status, and how can I make a appointment?

    • Vonda

Thank you for your question, Mamadu, and for reading our blog. Congratulations on becoming a U.S. citizen. You cannot update citizenship status with Social Security online. You will need to update your Social Security record by showing us your Certificate of Naturalization and completing an application for a corrected Social Security card. All submitted documents must be either originals or certified copies by the issuing agency. We cannot accept photocopies or notarized copies of documents. Please visit our Social Security and Coronavirus web page. If you believe you qualify for an in-office appointment, call your local office. You’ll find the contact information using our online Social Security Office Locator.

You will rarely need to show their card, but if you need information on how to obtain a replacement Social Security card, visit our Frequently Asked Questions. You will need to present documents proving your identity, your child’s identity and citizenship status (if not already established), and evidence of your relationship to, or responsibility for, your child. Keep in mind the submitted documents must be originals. You can use birth certificates to prove your child’s age or citizenship; however, you cannot use it as proof of identity. We hope this helps.
