The process for getting a replacement SS card for my 16 year old requires that I submit my drivers license as proof of identify – which I obviously can’t do since I need it for driving (I don’t have a current passport). The SS offices are closed. Will a copy of my DL be accepted? Otherwise, it currently impossible to get a child card.

Thank you for using our blog, Rich. That is not something that you can do online. Check out our Frequently Asked Questions web page for information on how to replace a Social Security card for a child. To learn more on the process and what documents you and your child will need to get a card, please visit our Learn what documents you will need to get a Social Security Card web page. Use our Social Security Office Locator to find your local office address. We hope this helps.

This did not answer the question at all. I’ve seen everything online. It doesn’t answer the question of how to provide proof of identity when the only acceptable proof (driver’s license) cannot be provided because state law requires that I have it when driving. Could someone actually read the question and provide an answer?

        • Vonda

Hi Rich. Check out our Social Security and Coronavirus web page for details on getting help with Social Security cards. You may be able to provide secondary level identity documents. For specific questions, you can call your local Social Security office. Please look for the general inquiry telephone number at the Social Security Office Locator. The number may appear under Show Additional Office Information. Please be aware that our call wait times are longer than normal. We hope this information helps.

My husband adopted my son and I’m not sure what or how to change his last name on his SS card we have the new birth certificate with his new last name in it.

    • Vonda

Visit our Learn What Documents You Need for details on the documentation requirements. Under the heading, “Type of Card,” select “Corrected” for a list of the documents needed. For complete instructions, go to the Social Security Number and Card web page. We hope this helps!
