Am I able to create a MYSocialSecurity account online for my aging father who has dementia? He is living in Assisted Living now. I don’t want to be his representative, per se, I just want to be able to view his information, etc. for tax purposes and to make sure everything is correctly working, etc. If he receives items in the mail, he doesn’t know what to do with them and sometimes throws them away. I’d like to sent up his online account so that I can look at what mail is sent out to him. I am his Power of Attorney and take care of all of his financial accounts, and I will be having his taxes done for him this year. He has dementia and is unable to do any financial tasks. Thank you for any help or clarification in doing this.

Hi, Teresa. Thanks for your question. Unfortunately, you can only create a my Social Security account using your own personal information and for your own exclusive use. You cannot create or use an account on behalf of another person, even if you have that person’s written permission. Please note that having Power of Attorney does not give you legal authority to manage payments for someone receiving Social Security or SSI benefits. If your father needs help managing his benefits, you may be interested in applying to become his representative payee. As a representative payee, you will have access to your father’s records and the ability to update his account information. A face-to-face interview is required when applying to be someone’s representative payee. If your father cannot be present, a statement from his doctor would be helpful. The statement should say that your father is not able to mentally and physically manage his Social Security benefits and identify you as the person responsible to keep his finances in order. Please read our publication: A Guide For Representative Payees for more information. If you have specific questions, or to make an appointment with the local Social Security office, please call 1-800-772-1213 Monday through Friday, between 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. and speak to one of our representatives. Generally, you’ll have a shorter wait time if you call later in the day. Thanks.

I have tried and tried and I DO NOT KNOW WHY I’m unable to access my social security account WHEN I KNOW THE ANSWERS TO THE QUESTIONS: Where was I when I heard about 9/11? Color of my first car? I have misplaced my username and password for my MySocialSecurity account. At my last attempt using what I thought were the correct username and password I was locked out. What do I have to do to reset them. Can I do that online, or must I call Social Security?

I decided to create an on-line account with SSA so that my 1099 wouldn’t be sent through the mail with SS number inside. When I tried to create the account, I had a message that said, “We cannot create an account with this SS number.” Earlier today, I called my local SS office and asked if having a fraud alert on my credit would prevent me from opening the account. Mrs. Lee, told me she didn’t think so. I think it must be the reason my number was rejected. Am I correct?

I need to change my account number for direct deposit. Same bank and routing number.
