you know where to find usFor 80 years, Social Security has been there for you and your family when you need us most. And, finding us at our field offices, where you can speak with an employee face-to-face, is easier than ever!

Our handy Field Office Locator is accessible from your computer and mobile device. On the website, you can enter your zip code to find the address, phone number and hours of the Social Security office closest to you. You can also use this tool to see a map and get directions; if you’re on your mobile device, it will even give you turn-by-turn directions.

Since you are already online, you could skip the traffic and lines by taking advantage of our other online features, too. Check out What You Can Do Online, where you’ll find that many of our services are just a click away!

For example, you use the Retirement Estimator to estimate future benefits, apply for Social Security benefits online and sign up for a personal my Social Security account. Setting up a personal my Social Security account is convenient and secure. You’ll have access to your Social Security Statement, and if you already receive benefits, you can view and print your verification letter and manage your benefits.

Some people prefer doing business in person, though, and that’s why our offices are there! Our employees are passionate about providing you with the best service possible, and we’re proud of our long history of doing so. When you visit us, whether in person or online, we’re always ready to help!

My mother passed away Christmas day and wanted to leave me some money. I know I have to inform you as I’m disabled and get disability checks. I don’t want to jeopardize my disability checks so I need to know how much she can leave me and still receive my disability checks. I don’t have to accept the money she left me. Can someone please contact me to explain the details and process.
    Thank you

  4. Robert M.

You have extensive information on the web site EXCEPT, how do I make an appointment at my local office for an in-office visit to report a life changing event?

  5. Ellen M.

How can I make an appointment at our local office?

I applied by mail for a change of name due to marriage but was asked to bring in (or mail again) the paper work and my passport. I prefer to do this in person, but am handicapped. I went to our office and waited two hours but had to leave. I need an appointment, please. Thankk you.

I “Searched” on the phrase “make an appointment”. I was sent here.
Why is there no capacity to make an appointment at my local SSA office on this very screen??
    OR…
Why did your software NOT respond with a screen that WOULD allow me to make an appointment at my local SSA office?

What part of “make an appointment” do you not understand??

    Thanks for nothing.

Hi, Michael. You can call our toll-free number at 1-800-772-1213 to make an appointment with your local Social Security office. Representatives at our toll-free number are available Monday through Friday, between 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. Generally, it’s best if you call later in the day. An appointment is not required, but if you call ahead and schedule one, it may reduce the time you spend waiting, it also establishes a protective filing date. However, you can now complete the online application for your Social Security benefits. It’s so easy, you can apply from the comfort of your home or office at a time most convenient for you. We hope this helps.

I would like to make an appointment at the Egg Harbor Township NJ SSA office on Doughty Road. I have not been able to find an on-line link to request an appointment. Please advise. Thank you!

    • V.V.

Hello Carol. We currently do not have an online appointment scheduler. However you do not need an appointment to file for benefits or appeal a disability decision. You can file for the following benefits online:
      Retirement;
      •Medicare; and
      Disability.

If you do not want to apply for benefits online, or you need to speak to us for any other reason, you can schedule, reschedule or cancel an appointment by:
      •Calling us at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778) between 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Friday; or
•Contacting your local Social Security office. Thanks!

I would like to make an appointment at my local social security office in California. My Father died, I’m turning 65, I need a replacement social security card for my Mother, and a replacement medicare card for my Mother-in-law. I’ve tried setting up accounts online, but I keep being told to come back later. I need help. I just want to talk to someone who can help. 207-745-4031

    • R.F.

We are sorry for your loss, Grace. Generally, the funeral home will report the person’s death to Social Security most times. To verify this information was reported, you will need to talk to one of our representatives.
If you’re turning 65 and need to apply for your Retirement or Medicare -ONLY- benefits, there are different ways that you can apply for Social Security benefits.
Please keep in mind that you cannot create or use an account on behalf of another person, you can only create a my Social Security account using your own personal information and for your own exclusive use. If your mother-in-law can’t or prefer not to use the online service to request a replacement Medicare card, she can call our toll free number at 1-800-772-1213. Representatives are available Monday through Friday, between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m.
Generally, you will experience a shorter wait time when you call later during the day or later in the week. Or she can contact the local Social Security office directly.
Lastly, to see if your mother is eligible to apply for a replacement Social Security card online or to learn more on the process and what documents she will need to get a card, please visit our “Social Security Number and Card” web page.
      We hope this information helps!

      We hope this helps!

  9. DON T.

How can I make an appointment for my local office in Garden Grove California. When I use the 800-772-1213 number it tells me that all of the operators are busy and to call back later then disconnects the call. Is there a online way to make the appointment?

    • R.F.

We’re sorry that you had difficulty reaching someone by phone, Don. We may have been experiencing higher than normal call volume.
We currently do not have an online appointment scheduler. However, you do not need an appointment to file for Retirement, Medicare or Disability benefits. Also, keep I mind that most of our services are always available online.
Generally, when calling our toll free number at 1-800-772-1213, you will experience a shorter wait time if you call later during the day or later in the week. Representatives are available Monday through Friday, between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. Thanks!

  10. Candace W.

I would like to make an appointment to see an administrator in person at the Social Security office near zip code 94025. I need to deny Medicare services as I am covered on my husband’s Kaiser insurance.
    Thank you

    • R.F.

Hi Candance. If you are talking about your Medicare Part B, our policy requires a personal interview be conducted with everyone who wants to terminate their Medicare Part B benefits. Representatives at your local Social Security office will help you submit the required Form CMS-1763, “Request for Termination of Premium Hospital and /or Supplementary Medical Insurance”, or your signed request for termination, but we need to speak to you personally before we terminate your Medicare benefits to be sure that you fully understand the consequences of doing so. We do not offer Form CMS-1763 online.
For further assistance or to make an appointment, call us at our toll free number, 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778). Representatives are available Monday through Friday, between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. Generally, you will experience a shorter wait time when you call later during the day or later in the week. Thanks!
