you know where to find usFor 80 years, Social Security has been there for you and your family when you need us most. And, finding us at our field offices, where you can speak with an employee face-to-face, is easier than ever!

Our handy Field Office Locator is accessible from your computer and mobile device. On the website, you can enter your zip code to find the address, phone number and hours of the Social Security office closest to you. You can also use this tool to see a map and get directions; if you’re on your mobile device, it will even give you turn-by-turn directions.

Since you are already online, you could skip the traffic and lines by taking advantage of our other online features, too. Check out What You Can Do Online, where you’ll find that many of our services are just a click away!

For example, you use the Retirement Estimator to estimate future benefits, apply for Social Security benefits online and sign up for a personal my Social Security account. Setting up a personal my Social Security account is convenient and secure. You’ll have access to your Social Security Statement, and if you already receive benefits, you can view and print your verification letter and manage your benefits.

Some people prefer doing business in person, though, and that’s why our offices are there! Our employees are passionate about providing you with the best service possible, and we’re proud of our long history of doing so. When you visit us, whether in person or online, we’re always ready to help!

I would like to make an appointment to speak to someone on my options for social security. I will be 66 in September on the 15th. I would like to come to the office but can’t seem to get anyone to talk to me to make an appointment – how can I make this appointment online to come in to the office and set down with someone.

    • A.C.

Hi, Julie. You do not have to make an appointment to come in to our offices, but with an appointment, you will be helped before our walk-in customers. You can schedule an appointment with your local office by calling us at 1-800-772-1213 between 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, and a representative will assist you. In most cases, you can handle your business by phone. Generally, you will have a shorter wait time if you call later in the day. We hope this helps.

I just want to make an appointment at the West Sacramento office online. I just need to show a copy of my marriage license. Is this possible. I have searched on the website with no luck.

    • V.V.

Hi Janice, thanks for using our blog to ask your question. Please use our Office Locator to locate your local office address, including their office hours, a map and directions. You do not need an appointment to drop off requested documentation.

  4. Mary A.

I want to make an appointment at the Valencia Street Office in San Francisco.

    • V.V.

Hello Mary Ann. We currently do not have an online appointment scheduler. However you do not need an appointment to file for benefits or appeal a disability decision. You can file for the following benefits online:
      Retirement;
      Medicare; and
      Disability.

If you do not want to apply for benefits online, or you need to speak to us for any other reason, you can schedule, reschedule or cancel an appointment by:
      •Calling us at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778) between 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Friday; or
•Contacting your local Social Security office. Thanks!

Would like to visit my SS office and talk person to person with someone about my options for retirement.

Do i need to make an appointment for this?

    • V.V.

Hi Walt, thank you for using our blog. You do not need an appointment to ask questions. You can call us at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778) between 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Friday or you can visit your local Social Security office. Be sure and check out their office hours before visiting.

I received Social Security payments through December 2017.
I have not received a payment in 2018.
    Why not?
It must have something to do with the fact that my social security benefit is not as great as my medicare Part A insurance premium.

But there should be some record of the Social Security Amount “paid”, and the amount taken for medicare insurance.

I need some documentation to do my 2018 income tax return.

    • V.V.

Thank you for your question, Ellen. Social Security sends an SSA-1099 each year in January to people who receive Social Security benefits using the address they have on file with Social Security.

You can request a replacement 2018 SSA-1099 or SSA-1042S after February 1 using your my Social Security account. If you do not already have an account, you can create one. Once you are logged in to your account, select the “Replacement Documents” tab.

If you are unable to create a my Social Security account or do not want to request it online, or you have a question about your 1099, you may call us at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778), Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. or you can contact your local Social Security office.

Hi Thomas. We are very sorry for your loss. Typically, the funeral director notifies us of an individual’s passing by contacting the local Social Security office. To verify this information was reported and to make an appointment for potential benefits, call our toll free number at 1-800-772-1213. Representatives are available Monday through Friday, between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m.

I will turn 65 years this month and have some questions about my SS – and Medicare benefits. Please phone me to set up an appointment with one of your reps at the number below. (If I don’t recognize your number and do not answer, because I am at work, PLEASE leave a voice mail message with your name, number and best time to return the call.) Thank you!

    • V.V.

Hello Romanita. Unfortunately, and because of security reasons, we do not have access to personal records in this blog and cannot assist you. You do not need an appointment to file for benefits. You can file for the following benefits online:
      Retirement;
      Medicare; and
      Disability.

If you aren’t ready to apply and just want to speak to us, you can call us at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778) between 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Friday; or contact your local Social Security office. Thanks!
