Supplemental Security Income Recipients Will Receive Automatic COVID-19 Economic Impact Payments

The Treasury Department announced that Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients will receive automatic Economic Impact Payments directly from the Treasury Department.  Treasury anticipates these automatic payments to go out no later than early May.

SSI recipients with no qualifying children do not need to take any action in order to receive their $1,200 economic impact payment. The payments will be automatic.

SSI recipients who have qualifying children under age 17, however, should not wait for their automatic $1,200 individual payment. They should now go to the IRS’s webpage and visit the Non-Filers: Enter Your Payment Info section to provide their information. By taking proactive steps to enter information on the IRS website about them and their qualifying children, they will also receive the $500 per dependent child payment in addition to their $1,200 individual payment. If SSI beneficiaries in this group do not provide their information to the IRS soon, they will have to wait until later to receive their $500 per qualifying child.

This is great news for SSI recipients, and I want to remind recipients with qualifying children to go to IRS.gov soon so that you will receive the full amount of the Economic Impact Payments you and your family are eligible for. I also want to thank the dedicated employees of the Treasury Department, Social Security, and the Internal Revenue Service for making this happen and working non-stop on this issue.

SSI Recipients with Dependent Children Should Still Go To IRS.gov to Provide Their Information

Social Security retirement, survivors, and disability insurance beneficiaries (who don’t normally file taxes) will also qualify for automatic payments of $1,200 from Treasury. These payments are anticipated to start arriving around the end of April.

The Treasury Department, not Social Security, will make these automatic payments to beneficiaries. Recipients will generally receive the automatic payments by direct deposit, Direct Express debit card, or by paper check, just as they would normally receive their SSI or Social Security benefits.

For those SSI and Social Security retirement, survivors, and disability insurance beneficiaries, with dependent children, who use Direct Express debit cards, additional information will be available soon regarding the steps to take when claiming children under 17, on the IRS website.

Please note that the agency will not consider Economic Impact Payments as income for SSI recipients, and the payments are excluded from resources for 12 months.

For more information about Social Security retirement, survivors, and disability insurance beneficiaries, please see our most recent blog.

The eligibility requirements and other information about the Economic Impact Payments can be found on the IRS website. In addition, please continue to visit the IRS for the latest information.

We are in the same boat where ssi comes on one date and ssd comes on the other. But we have dependents under 16… I can’t file the Non-filers form because Direct Express doesn’t have a routing number. IRS, SSA are closed so no answer, called direct express and they told me to call IRS or SSA. Let me know if you find out anything about this because I’ve had no luck whatsoever finding out any information about this…

Hi Rusty, thank you for your question. Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients who do not have qualifying children under age 17 do not need to take any action with the IRS. You will automatically receive your $1,200 economic impact payment directly from the IRS. You should receive the automatic payments by direct deposit, Direct Express debit card, or by paper check, just as you would normally receive your Social Security benefits. Treasury expects automatic payments for Social Security beneficiaries no later than the end of April and automatic payments for SSI recipients no later than early May. We hope this helps.

So i read a TON of these comments n didn’t see any that are wondering the same as i am. So if you have a direct express card for benefits from a Deceased spouse due to their child being a minor. The minor was claimed by another daily member this year due to them helping out alot financially this year due to the others health issues last year.
So i know that they will receive the tax credit and the stumps check for the child..But Will the person who has their name on the Direct Express card whose responsible for the minor also get their payment on their as well? Because since you can’t talk to the damn IRS BECAUSE secretly years ago my identity was stolen and I’m suppose to have a pin sent to me yearly. I thought it was only suppose to be for 3 to 5 years not 10 plus…i haven’t gotten a pin for years, and haven’t worked in over a couple years since I’ve been waiting for ssdi. So I’m very concerned and confused in what i do and don’t need to do to get that check. If anyone knows or can help I’d REALLY APPRECIATE IT!!!! Thank you and hope Erving works out for everyone on here trying to get their checks and information they’re looking for.

I file jointly with my husband who is an SSI recipient and we qualify for the economic stimulus. I understand that he will receive his payment electronically since that’s how the SSI comes through, but will it include a payment for me as well? We have no other dependents. Am I a non-filer for this situation, even though we filed jointly?

  8. J W.

My name is Judy and I wanted to say that times are very difficult right now. I have seen people make comments that no one on ss should complain, they made it every month before the virus, so they should be making it now. That could be true for some, and I cannot deny that some people take advantage, but that is not the case for everyone. I am 74 and I worked 64 years. I had to work at the age of 10 on the farm with my mom, and I was in charge of household chores and taking care of my brothers and sister in the evenings when my single mother went to her second job. I married at 17, biggest mistake of my life. I stayed home and raised my kids for a few years and then had to get a job because my lazy alcoholic ex husband sure wasn’t going to do it. I am retired now, and made so little that I qualified for SSI on top of the retirememnet, and I have no shame using it. I have physical problems, and cannot drive so I was pushed into using delivery services such as instacart through the month of April. One of the young women that was delivering to me sent me a text that I should be giving her at least $50 tip because she is risking her life, she is not compensated for gas, and has a long way to travel. I gave her $30, it was truly the best I could do. I had have 6 deliveries this month, twice I had to use the service just for toilet paper, because it was out of stock when I had the groceries delivered. Having groceries delivered would normally be considered a luxury, reserved for the middle class and higher people. But now some of us are forced to use it, a program that we cannot afford and many would say in normal circumstance, we have no business using. Yet, we are now being told to use it. I get 850.00 a month. I spent $180 on deliveries. Plus I ended up spending more on groceries than I normally would. I don’t know why, but the bill was higher than usual. So I now have more than 10 days to wait for my check, and I am down to half a bag of corn flakes, 8 packs of ramen, half a gallon of milk, some peanut butter and jelly (no bread) and 1 box of kraft mac and cheese. Listen, I am not complaining, I truly am not. But what hurts is we were told we would receive this money, they gave us hope, but in reality we probably won’t see it until our next check. I would have been better off if they had just sent me an extra $100 this month, done it quickly, instead of $1200 that they are more or less just teasing us with.

Judy; Are you in Connecticut or any states surrounding it? This is probably the most real and honest post I have seen on here. I would like to contact you safely outside of here. Maybe a public place I could leave something for you?

      “Lazy”
      “Alcoholic”

Things that aren’t true for $1,200.

Alcohol is expensive. Either he had an income or he was stealing his alcohol. Since you say you weren’t working AT ALL and he was buying alcohol, he clearly was working.

      Stop lying about men.
Stop whining that your male piggybank ran dry.
Stop whining that you had to…oh noes…get a job and work like men have to do.
I swear, you roasties are so accustomed to being spoiled and never having to work that you sexistly believe you shouldn’t have to.
      You women wanted equality.
      You got it.
Now stop whining and stop slandering men.
Woman up and take responsibility for your life instead of blaming men for your incompetence.

So now I feel like it’s unclear if infact those that have direct express will receive stimulus payment on that card or not?

    • matt

there are a bunch of liars here. we don’t know

    • Rob

Yes you will receive your money on your direct express card.

    • V.V.

Hi M, thank you for your question. Social Security retirement, survivors, or disability beneficiaries and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients who do not have qualifying children under age 17 do not need to take any action with the IRS.
