Supplemental Security Income Recipients Will Receive Automatic COVID-19 Economic Impact Payments

The Treasury Department announced that Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients will receive automatic Economic Impact Payments directly from the Treasury Department.  Treasury anticipates these automatic payments to go out no later than early May.

SSI recipients with no qualifying children do not need to take any action in order to receive their $1,200 economic impact payment. The payments will be automatic.

SSI recipients who have qualifying children under age 17, however, should not wait for their automatic $1,200 individual payment. They should now go to the IRS’s webpage and visit the Non-Filers: Enter Your Payment Info section to provide their information. By taking proactive steps to enter information on the IRS website about them and their qualifying children, they will also receive the $500 per dependent child payment in addition to their $1,200 individual payment. If SSI beneficiaries in this group do not provide their information to the IRS soon, they will have to wait until later to receive their $500 per qualifying child.

This is great news for SSI recipients, and I want to remind recipients with qualifying children to go to IRS.gov soon so that you will receive the full amount of the Economic Impact Payments you and your family are eligible for. I also want to thank the dedicated employees of the Treasury Department, Social Security, and the Internal Revenue Service for making this happen and working non-stop on this issue.

SSI Recipients with Dependent Children Should Still Go To IRS.gov to Provide Their Information

Social Security retirement, survivors, and disability insurance beneficiaries (who don’t normally file taxes) will also qualify for automatic payments of $1,200 from Treasury. These payments are anticipated to start arriving around the end of April.

The Treasury Department, not Social Security, will make these automatic payments to beneficiaries. Recipients will generally receive the automatic payments by direct deposit, Direct Express debit card, or by paper check, just as they would normally receive their SSI or Social Security benefits.

For those SSI and Social Security retirement, survivors, and disability insurance beneficiaries, with dependent children, who use Direct Express debit cards, additional information will be available soon regarding the steps to take when claiming children under 17, on the IRS website.

Please note that the agency will not consider Economic Impact Payments as income for SSI recipients, and the payments are excluded from resources for 12 months.

For more information about Social Security retirement, survivors, and disability insurance beneficiaries, please see our most recent blog.

The eligibility requirements and other information about the Economic Impact Payments can be found on the IRS website. In addition, please continue to visit the IRS for the latest information.

this is all such bull shit. first it was one date, then another, then another. then you need to do this, and then that… no wait, you don’t need to do this… or that… OH don’t do THAT, it will mess it all up. Its going to your account, its not going to your account. it’s being snail mailed. tomorrow it will be some other bull shit story. they say ssi should use the non filers tool, then they say not to. Now we find those that did use it, are getting checks sent out next week? what the hell. i used it as well, i put my amount in that i got from 2018, filled in everything correctly… rejected twice. Wheres my payment says they can’t find my eligibility or whatever the hell it was. The same thing for my wife, who is retired. you know what, keep the god damn checks. It was absolutely cruel to put people through this. I am not coming back here. They can take our “checks” and shove them up their asses.

There being sent anytime from now till the end of the month for SSDI and early May for SSI. Theres a troll on here who’s spreading false stories under diff names to fuck with us all.

    • kendra

Yes ! it is starting to get old. I think the people like linda and jessica are just trolls though. no one on ssi is seeing any dates for their payments.

      • Rob

@kendra, yup straight trolls… man get a life lol

      • Joel H.

The April 24th thing IS real though. Its all over Twitter and reddit.

        • kendra

right, and how is it those people are so special and can get the non filer to work for them, but not the rest? please.

      • Linda W.

I am SSDI and I feel blessed to at least get a reply even if they changed it. They are asking us to give DDepodit and then they do not accept it. I had my refund mailed to me. They sent it on Friday and I received it on Monday very quick. So just letting people know that DD is not working on the Get my payment portal. I know everyone needs their money bc groceries and supplies are really high. Good luck I am not a troll. I ghope or my date from Get my payment on Saturday. I would not lead people down the wrong path. I prepared taxes for the public for years.

Question , I have custody of my 8 year old granddaughter, she receives survivor benefits, they are direct deposit into my account , will she receive the stimulus, I cannnot find and answers on this

    • V.V.

Hi Shannon, thank you for your question. Please visit the IRS Economic Impact Payments Information Center to answer your questions about eligibility, payment amounts, what to expect, when to expect it and more. Hope this helps!

I went to get my payment and mine will be mailed on April 24th. For three previous days the get my payment said mine would go to my bank direct deposit then it changed on Saturday. I also have a direct express card. I gave my DD info the first day that portal opened but it changed me to Snail Mail. Why the changes in the same week?

    • Victoria

I have a direct express card I get my disability on and when I went to the get my payment it info not available

    • jessica

The same thing happened to me too. Do you have ssi too? Im just glad we get our checks before ssd they have to wait til the end of next week and i bet they get theirs mailed too if we are getting them mailed. Those ssd suckers are just mad we took their pay week. Too bad chumps lmao.

      • Victoria

I read they are gonna deposit them on your direct express card iof that’s what u use to get your monthly benifits

      • Victoria

No I don’t have SSI. Just disabilty

      • Peter

Im on ssdi and im not angry if ssi get theirs first , cause ssi are far lower in benifit’s . ssi needs it more . than ssdi do at the moment, they did say they would do the lower ones first, and yes it makes sense, small pays does stink, to have to get that forevermore, ssdi im sorry we get a higher benifits payments but i can budget my cash benifit better cause i get good amount to live, not like Rockefeller”, but good enough to get by on , but so im glad ssi went first, i would put anyone before me in need first but then thats me, gid bless you’s all and i hope all be safe and healthy

      • Diana H.

Thats rude Jessica. Included in that group are also retired people, who are in need just as much as you, and they are not all pissed off that they were supposed to be first.

    • Joel B.

Same here on SSDI. Looks like somebody further up got called a troll too over it.

    • Jess

      Linda,
I think the switch happened because of all the glitches with the money being sent to unknown bank accounts, deceased peoples accounts and millions being incorrectly sent. While getting a mailed check is not ideal, you at least can be feel better knowing that you actually will get it. Providing they have your correct address.

    • harry

Linda did you use the non filer tool? It keeps rejecting mine, and I have ssi.

      • warren t.

harry- don’t fall for the bs
nobody on s.s.i has been given a payment date yet

  4. Christina B.

What if you and your children received a ssa-1099 do I have to do anything

    • V.V.

Hi Christina, thank you for using our blog. People who receive Social Security retirement, survivors, or disability insurance benefits, who did not file a tax return for 2018 or 2019, and who have qualifying children under age 17 and those receiving SSI who have qualifying children under age 17 should go to the IRS’s webpage to enter your information instead of waiting for your automatic $1,200 Economic Impact Payment. By taking proactive steps to enter information on the IRS website about you and your qualifying children, you will also receive the $500 per dependent child payment in addition to your $1,200 individual payment. If Social Security beneficiaries and SSI recipients in this group do not provide information to the IRS soon, you will have to wait to receive $500 per qualifying child. We hope this helps.

Does the get my payment only work for taxpayers? It says info, not available when I tried it. I’m on ssdi and get it on the direct express card.

  7. ssdi i.

    HEY
THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE SOLDIER! I ALWAYS WISH I WAS ABLE BODIED ENOUGH BUT I NEVER WAS ABLE TO PASS THE PHYSICAL.
ANYWAYS YOULL GET IT IN YOUR SSDI ACCOUNT FIRST ASSUMING YOU HAVE DIRECT DEPOSIT.

  8. Terri

Some of you actually think your child who receives SSI < 16 deserves a stimulus check? ?'s like my 2 year old gets SSI will he/she get a stimulus check? NOOOOOOOOOOO THEY WILL NOT. Greedy mofos. We are used to 1 check a month. Waiting til next month should feel normal. I don't get it. Especially the SSI people. Us on SSDI put a lot of man hours and paid thousands into the system. Good grief

    • ssdi i.

      SO TRUE
I HAD MY DISABILITY MY WHOLE LIFE AND WORKED ANYWAY. MY FOLKS BROUGHT ME UP AND TOLD ME TO FIND A WAY YO EARN A LIVING AND NOT ALLOW MY DISABILITY TO BE USED AS AN EXCUSE NOT TO AND I DID THAT UNTIL MY BODY COULD NOT DO IT ANYMORE. I LOVE MY FOLKS FOR THAT. THE MORE I COME ON THIS SITE THE MORE I REALIZE THAT THESE KIDS DONT HAVE A CHANCE. THEIR PARENTS ARE USING THEM AS A PAYCHECK. WHY WOULD YOUR KIDS NEED $1200 CHECKS ON TOP OF YOUR OWN $1200 CHECK? ARENT YOU EMBARRASSED TO EVEN BE SO BRAZENLY GREEDY?
YOUR KIDS DONT EVEN DESERVE AN SSI CHECK. THEY REALLY ARE YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO PROVIDE FOR. WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO THAT? AND YOU KNOW ITS ALWAYS WOMEN DOING IT. ITS A DAMN SHAME HOW AMERICA REWARDS WOMEN FOR BEING WHORES AND HAVING UNWANTED CHILDREN TO FORCE MEN AND THE GOVERNMENT ON CHILD SUPPORT. LOL THEY REALLY KEEP ASKING FOR $1200 FOR THEIR KIDS ON SSI EVERY SINGLE DAY TOO. SSA SHOULD INVESTIGATE CUT THOSE KIDS SSI CHECKS AND MAKE THESE BITCHES WORK…MAYBE THE MAIL ROOM SENDING OUT STIM CHECKS. LOL

      • HumptyDance

        Take your meds, boomer.

  9. rodd

I have SSI and was claimed as dependent in 2018 but I just filed 2019 taxes as head of household (not a dependent). Will I get the stimulus?

  10. Quinn

I am a recipient of SSDI and my daughter, who is 17 and lives with me, also receives monthly payments as my beneficiary because she is still a full time student. She does not work and has never done any taxes. I have been out of work now for 3.5 years, ever since I was diagnosed with a serious medical condition. I have not done taxes as I have not been required to, so my daughter has not been claimed by anyone, nor has she claimed herself. Because she is my beneficiary and receives benefits from my Disability claim, is a full time student and does not work and has not been claimed as a dependent for the last 3 years, should I have her go to the IRS link to complete the non-filers, so that she too can receive the stimulus?

    • Chameeka

Yes if she fills it out they will tell her if she can receive it or not

    • V.V.
