I am 63 yr and 10 mo old. I am still working and making about $30,000 per yr. Under the retirement earnings calculator my monthly benefit is $1479. how much per month would I actually receive before taxes? Also why should I wait until full retirement age to start drawing SS.

    • Vonda V.

Hi Roxann, thank you for using our blog to ask your question. At Social Security, we’re often asked, “What’s the best age to start receiving retirement benefits?” The answer is that there’s not a single “best age” for everyone and, ultimately, it’s your choice. The most important thing is to make an informed decision. Base your decision about when to apply for benefits on your individual and family circumstances.

As an individual, you have four basic choices when it comes to work and retirement. Consider the four options laid out in our benefit matrix to help you make the best decision for you.

Our system is set up to take applications four months in advance, and when you’re ready, you can apply for your benefits online.

Check out our Retirement Planner for additional information. You also may find the Earnings Test Calculator helpful.

Can I get income from my current married spouse social security benefits?

    • Vonda V.

Hi Kenneth, thanks for using our blog to ask your question. We will always pay your own retirement benefit first. If your benefits as a spouse are higher than your own retirement benefits, you will get a combination of benefits equaling the higher spouse benefit. However, a spouse’s benefit cannot exceed one-half of your spouse’s full retirement amount (not the reduced benefit amount). So, you can only receive additional spouse’s benefits if your own full retirement benefit (not a reduced benefit) is less than half of your spouse’s full retirement benefit.

Generally, during the initial interview when applying for Social Security benefits, we typically explore all other benefits that could yield you a higher benefit amount. To find out if you are eligible for a higher benefit amount, you can call us at 1-800-772-1213 or you can contact your local Social Security office. Please look for the general inquiry telephone number at the Social Security Office Locator. The number may appear under Show Additional Office Information. Please be aware that our call wait times are longer than normal. We hope this information helps.

  8. Sylvia M.

Hello my name is Sylvia. I’m currently receiving SSI. I’m court ordered to pay almost $300 for some time now. With only receiving the maximum of $700, it leaves me with not even enough to pay my rent with also having to pay arrears along with Child Support. I live alone with no help whatsoever. I don’t have a problem paying, but my son is well over 19 years old and has also graduated and I’m still paying C/S along with the arrears.
My question is Is there anything I can do about lowering my payments, and I was well aware Child Support payees pay according to how much income is being made. SSI is my only income.

    • Vonda V.

Hi Sylvia, thanks for using our blog. You cannot appeal to Social Security for implementing garnishment orders. If you disagree with the garnishment, contact an attorney or representative where the court issued the order. Check out our Frequently Asked Questions web page for additional details.

  9. Twylla J.

My name is Twylla Jo Ross. Charles Ray Ross was my husband from 05/05/95, until 05/03/2010. He’d been medically retired after Desert Storm and suffered for many years, resulting in many heart operations, limb amputations, and various other health concerns. I’ve been informed that I am due SSI Benefits.
I was told to provide a copy of our Marriage Certificate. I have that. What are my next steps?

    Thank You.

  10. Garry
