My ex-spouse passed on 2/9/2018 and we were married 10/16/1970. I have divorce documents after 12 years and his ss#. My benefits have been reduced and looking for my options.
A.C.
Hi, Darcel. To be eligible for divorced spouse benefits, you had to be married to your former spouse for at least 10 years, and you cannot be eligible for a higher benefit on your own record. For more information on how to qualify for divorced spouse benefits, visit our Benefits Planner: If You Are Divorced. We hope this helps.

My mother passed away recently. Was is the correct way to report her death to the SSA. We are having the bank return her most recent deposit and want to stop any future deposits,
A.C.
Hi, Randy. We are sorry to hear about your loss. Typically, the funeral director notifies us of an individual’s passing by sending the deceased person’s death certificate to their local Social Security office. However, you may report the death of your mother by submitting her death certificate to your local Social Security office. We hope this helps.
