My husband TOSHIMITSU KANZAKI died on 14th September 2019, and I have already sent the notice letter to Social Security Administration by air-mail. On the other hand, I received IMPORTANT INFORMATION for TOSHIMITSU KANZAKI on December 2019 which stated Security benefits monthly amount. Although my husband is dead, is it okay to receive his Security benefits?

    • A.C.

Hi, Noriko. We are sorry to hear about your loss. This may not be the news you were hoping to hear, but we wanted you to hear it straight from us. To be eligible for Social Security benefits, a person has to live throughout the entire month to receive his or her check. Therefore, when a person passes away, Social Security benefits are not payable for the month in which a beneficiary dies. This applies whether the person dies on the first or the last day of the month. For more information about possible benefits as a survivor, please see our publication, How Social Security Can Help You When A Family Member Dies. We hope this helps.

How many years do you have to pay into Social Security for Part A if you have you need 17 quarters and have pay 12 years already.

    • A.C.

Hi, Sarah. Generally, you need 40 credits (10 years of work) in your lifetime. The Social Security credits you earn also count toward eligibility for Medicare when you reach age 65.You can earn a maximum of 4 credits per year. To earn 17, you would have to work a little more than 4 years. For more information, check out our publication, How You Earn Credits. We hope this helps.
