Our online benefits application provides a high level of security and protection for the information you provide. Filing online gives you the freedom and convenience to file for various types of benefits including Retirement, Disability, Supplemental Security Income, and Medicare.
Follow these simple steps to begin:
- Review the information on our Retirement/Spouse’s, Disability, Medicare, or Supplemental Security Income Benefits page to make sure you meet the requirements to apply for benefits online and have the information you will need to do so.
- Create or sign in to your personal my Social Security account.
- File your claim online.
- Check the status of your claim by signing in to your personal my Social Security account.
You should be able to complete and submit your application all at once. But if that’s not possible, you can return to your application and continue right where you left off!
After you’ve completed your application, we’ll also give you a confirmation number to check the status, and information on what to do next. If we are not able to process the request, we will provide specific information on how to contact us by phone or schedule an office appointment.
Applying for benefits online is safer, easier, and more secure than ever!

What paperwork do I need to bring to prove my pension income
A.C.
Hi, Steve. For your security, we do not have access to private information in this venue. We ask that members in our Blog community work with our offices with specific questions. You can call us at 1-800-772-1213, Monday through Friday, between 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m., for assistance. Generally, you will have a shorter wait if you call later in the day. You can also contact your local Social Security office. We hope this helps.

Tried to apply on-line with the on-line benefits application.
It would not process. Tried numerous times. No errors on my part on the application. Can’t talk to anybody on a phone to find out what I do next. Very discouraged. Logged in and out 4 times to try and submit the application.

Hello I want to create an online account and have all the information required except I currently reside out of the country. How do I take advantage of the service. I tried calling the 800 number but it does not work from Canada.
Thanks
A.C.
Hi, Marc. We’re sorry for any inconvenience. Unfortunately, you will need a U.S. address to register for a personal my Social Security account. Since you are living outside of the U.S. you can contact your local Federal Benefits Unit for any assistance related to Social Security benefits. Also, our Office of International Operations home page provides more information to assist our customers living abroad. We hope this helps.

I am disabled and retired in September. I was unable to get to the local office so waited 1 month for an interview over the phone. I did not realize that by doing this I would lose my first months payment of benefit. I assumed that they would backdate payment for that first month. had someone inform me of this I would have figured out a way to go in person on the date I was eligible to begin receiving benefits. Especially given the fact that I had mailed in my application 2 months prior to the date I was eligible and that was returned to me saying I had submitted it too soon.

My wife had an appointment on Friday to discuss her Social Security Benefits. She called many times but spend over an hour on the phone trying to get the appointment and then waited three weeks to have the appointment. There were a number of things to discuss, we had just moved, change of address and direct deposit, and last but certainly not least our financial adviser said we qualified for and should take advantage of a “Restricted Application.” She received a call on Monday from a “LillyAnna” who simply said that she was going to cancel her appointment. My wife begged and pleaded with her multiple times not to but she simply said it is already cancelled. Please help me understand how Social Security can make an appointment and then 2 1/2 weeks later simply cancel it?

I need help getting my son back on his benefits. I was awarded money due to a divorce and I was told to spend the money and he will be back on benefits. I also sent in my bank statement showing where the money went. They say that is not enough. What in the world can I do?
