Our Newly Redesigned Retirement Benefits Portal
Reading Time: 1 MinuteLast Updated: November 2, 2023
Today, I’m excited to announce the first of several steps we’re taking to improve your experience on our website. Our newly redesigned retirement benefits portal will help you prepare for and apply for retirement.
We are working hard to continue improving our website to provide you with clear, helpful information, and easy access to our online services. Our new retirement portal is more user-friendly and easier to navigate, whether you’re ready to learn about, apply for, or manage your retirement benefits.
The redesigned portal will make it easier for you to find and read about retirement benefits, with fewer pages and clearer information. We condensed and rewrote most of the pages to make them easier to understand. The portal is optimized for mobile devices so people can learn and do what they want from wherever they want. And you can now subscribe to receive retirement information and updates.
Visit our new retirement benefits portal to find out how to Learn, Apply, and Manage retirement benefits. You also can learn how to create your own personal my Social Security account to see your latest Social Security Statement, review your earnings history, and receive personalized estimates of future benefits based on your real earnings.
More improvements to Social Security’s web pages are planned for later in 2020 as we continuously seek to improve your experience on our website.

If I require in-person office visit to remove security or fraud alert to set up my online account, what is going to be work around for this before offices reopen?. I had excellent phone processing my retirement by the jackson,mi office this week..

Hi Heather, thanks for using our blog to ask your question. Check out our Frequently Asked Questions web page for details on how remove a fraud alert. We hope this helps!

Can Americans living in Canada now use the online system?
V.V.
Hi Joan, thank you for your question. At this time you must have a U. S. mailing address to create or access your online account. The “my Social Security” authentication system requires address verification as one of the essential criteria for issuing an account. People with APO/FPO/DPO addresses can create an account overseas, but our system does not support registration and account creation for users with a foreign address yet.
Even though you are unable to create a my Social Security account, you may still file applications online. You can apply online for retirement benefits if you:
•are at least 61 years and 9 months old;
•are not currently receiving benefits on your own Social Security record;
•have not already applied for retirement benefits; and
•want your benefits to start no more than 4 months in the future. (We cannot process your application if you apply for benefits more than 4 months in advance.)
For assistance, you can use the Canadian Service Area Directory to determine which Resident Office is near you. We hope this helps!

Many American citizens are working and living abroad. Your website prevents those citizens who are living outside of the U.S. from registering to take advantage of the “My Social Security Account” information.
Certainly, the technology exists to allow any person who has a Social Security number to register and access the “My Social Security Account” protocol.
Can you explain why we are being blocked from accessing this most useful tool?

Thanks for the improvements and the new design. When will you make it possible for Americans living overseas to have a “my social security account?”
The present stipulation that one must have a US mailing address needs to be reconsidered..
V.V.
Hi Fahmi, thank you for using our blog and for your suggestion. Thank you!

Not addressing the needs of those U.S. citizens living abroad is a monumental failure of Social Security Administration. The “My Social Security Account” must be made available to every citizen that has a valid Social Security number.
