“The Treasury Department launched a new web tool allowing quick registration for Economic Impact Payments for eligible individuals who do not normally file a tax return, and also announced that it would begin making automatic payments.  However, for some people receiving benefits from the Social Security Administration—specifically those who have dependent children under the age of 17—it is to their advantage to go to this portal to ensure they also get the $500 per dependent Economic Impact Payment.  I encourage them to do this as soon as possible, and want to provide the following details:

People who receive Social Security retirement, survivors, or disability insurance benefits and who did not file a tax return for 2018 or 2019 and who have qualifying children under age 17 should now go to the IRS’s webpage to enter their information instead of waiting for their automatic $1,200 Economic Impact Payment.  By taking proactive steps to enter information on the IRS website about them and their qualifying children, they will also receive the $500 per dependent child payment in addition to their $1,200 individual payment.  If Social Security beneficiaries in this group do not provide their information to the IRS soon, they will have to wait to receive their $500 per qualifying child.

The same new guidance also applies to SSI recipients, especially those who have qualifying children under age 17.  To receive the full amount of the Economic Impact Payments you and your family are eligible for, go to the IRS’s Non-Filers: Enter Payment Info page and provide information about yourself and your qualifying children.

Additionally, any new beneficiaries since January 1, 2020, of either Social Security or SSI benefits, who did not file a tax return for 2018 or 2019, will also need to go to the IRS’s Non-Filers website to enter their information.

Lastly, for Social Security retirement, survivors, or disability beneficiaries who do not have qualifying children under age 17, you do not need to take any action with the IRS.  You will automatically receive your $1,200 economic impact payment directly from the IRS as long as you received an SSA-1099 for 2019.

For SSI recipients who do not have qualifying children under age 17, we continue to work closely with Treasury in our efforts to make these payments automatically.  Please note that we will not consider Economic Impact Payments as income for SSI recipients.

The eligibility requirements and other information about the Economic Impact Payments can be found at the IRS’s Coronavirus Tax Relief and Economic Impact Payments page.  In addition, please continue to visit the IRS for the latest information.”

      • Tammy D.

Hi Vonda, I get direct deposit SSDI and I know I will automatically get the $1200. However, will I need to do anything if my adopted 14 yr old grandson gets direct deposit benefits (and a SSA 1099 in January each year)?
        Thanks

Many of the elderly female population have earned low lifetime wages, have lived frugally all our life, have been caretakers for their deceased husbands, parents and children and others, and have been advised to hold out as long as possible on their small pension, in order to increase their limited social security payment, if they expect to live a long life on social security. This is the very population that has not been spending their entire life and could use a stimulus check to pay for needed home repairs, etc. Is it true that the elderly, who are waiting to collect social security, won’t qualify for a stimulus check?

    • V.V.

Hi Lisa, thank you for your question. Please visit the IRS Economic Impact Payments Information Center to answer your questions about eligibility, payment amounts, what to expect, when to expect it and more. Hope this helps!

  3. Mariah

I get ssi and I’m 25 will I still get the check?

    • OE P.

The check has nothing to do with SSI, but whether you filed a tax return, and made less than $99,000. If you made less than 99,000 and did NOT file a tax return in 2018 or 2019, then go to IRS.gov and file an abbreviated return to insure you get the money soonest.

    • Maria

Yes and you shouldn’t have to do anything. You will receive your $1200 the same way you receive your regular SSI money.

      • Grant

Not true. SSI recipients need to go to this link (also mentioned above)
        https://www.irs.gov/coronavirus/economic-impact-payments
Click on the “Non-Filers -Enter Payment info Here” button. OR, wait for the IRS to post some new information. If you have a bank account you can speed things up by adding your direct deposit info. I receive SSI. I filled out the form and it was accepted.

        • Holly

Not true ssi does not have to do anything the irs takes their info from the ssa-1099 form

  4. Mariah

I get ssi and I’m 25 will I still receive the check?

    • V.V.

Hi Maria, thank you for your question. For SSI recipients to receive the full amount of the Economic Impact Payments you need to go to the IRS’s Non-Filers: Enter Payment Info page and provide information about yourself. Hope this helps.

  5. Myrtle M.

I recieve SSA but I have a grandaughter that dont get claimed on anyone taxes nor do she get any ssi nor SSA. But she revealed cash benefits. How would she get her stimulus money?

  6. Jim F.

It sounds to me that IRS starts to deposit $1200 to bank account of retired indivisual or retired disable individual on 4/13/2020.

    • Archie

If i receive both ssi and ssa disability, will i receive a check for both separately?

      • David

Wow! I see you are really confused, let me try and explain this to you. SSA is the social security administration that is who handles the funds such as social security retirement, survivor benefits and ssdi (social security disability insurance ). SSI (supplimental security income) which comes from the tax base and not out of the social security funds, its more like a welfare program. You may qualify for both ssdi and ssi but only one pays you as I do and if ssdi stops paying me for what ever reason ssi will start paying me. So with that said you will only one check

      • Alex

Why would you get two checks for one person? The only way you get more than $1200.00 is if you have a spouse that qualifies or a dependent.. You don’t get two checks or double the amount because you receive both SSI and SSDI

  7. Mary E.

Will people who receive social security benefits by direct deposit and file a tax return receive
the stimulus by direct deposit if there is no Direct
Deposit information on the tax return. I have Never
put direct deposit information on any tax return.
SSA has my direct deposit information. Will the treasury get it from SSA.

If you are eligible to receive an Economic Impact Payment, and you filed to receive your 2019 tax refund to your Western Union® Netspend® Prepaid Mastercard®, the IRS plans to distribute your stimulus payment to that Account.

If you currently use your Western Union® Netspend® Prepaid Mastercard® to receive Social Security or Railroad Retirement funds, the IRS plans to deposit your Economic Impact Payment into your existing Account.

If you are eligible to receive an Economic Impact Payment, and the IRS sends you a paper check, you may add the check funds to your Account without leaving your home by using Mobile Check Load1. With the snap of a few pictures using your mobile device and Mobile App2, you can deposit your stimulus payment. All checks are subject to approval. Fees may apply.

If you did not file a tax return and do not receive Social Security funds via direct deposit, you may need to submit a simple form to receive the Economic Impact Payment directly to your Account. Learn more about the stimulus payment, including timing and disbursement options, at the IRS website here.

    • Hilda N.

I’m a parent representatives on adult sons account. I filed with him as a beneficiary. Do he get stimulus on direct Express card? Or will I get it in my acct for him and only 500 for him. He is an adult.

      • Heather

Did you mean you filed with him as a dependent? You wrote as a beneficiary-?
As he is an adult neither he or you qualify for the $500 that’s what they say you have to be under 17 to get the $500. Also If you did not claim him on your taxes, then he is eligible to collect his own $1200 as an adult on Social Security, If you did claim him then he’s not eligible to collect any money at this time, sadly they did not arrange it that way for this stimulus package also college students who are claimed on their parents taxes don’t get anything as well. But you as an adult are able to collect your own $1200 so long as your income is under those specific amount stated and all that jazz. If he is eligible, his benefit money should come the same way as his monthly benefits do, and yours should come the same way your regular tax refund would come, whether you had it direct Direct deposit to your bank or paper check. If you did not file any taxes for whatever reason, or your info has changed since then, you would need to go in and fill out the updated info on the IRS website, update your information to get the check to you either in your bank or in the mail
