New Guidance about COVID-19 Economic Impact Payments

“The Treasury Department launched a new web tool allowing quick registration for Economic Impact Payments for eligible individuals who do not normally file a tax return, and also announced that it would begin making automatic payments.  However, for some people receiving benefits from the Social Security Administration—specifically those who have dependent children under the age of 17—it is to their advantage to go to this portal to ensure they also get the $500 per dependent Economic Impact Payment.  I encourage them to do this as soon as possible, and want to provide the following details:

People who receive Social Security retirement, survivors, or disability insurance benefits and who did not file a tax return for 2018 or 2019 and who have qualifying children under age 17 should now go to the IRS’s webpage to enter their information instead of waiting for their automatic $1,200 Economic Impact Payment.  By taking proactive steps to enter information on the IRS website about them and their qualifying children, they will also receive the $500 per dependent child payment in addition to their $1,200 individual payment.  If Social Security beneficiaries in this group do not provide their information to the IRS soon, they will have to wait to receive their $500 per qualifying child.

The same new guidance also applies to SSI recipients, especially those who have qualifying children under age 17.  To receive the full amount of the Economic Impact Payments you and your family are eligible for, go to the IRS’s Non-Filers: Enter Payment Info page and provide information about yourself and your qualifying children.

Additionally, any new beneficiaries since January 1, 2020, of either Social Security or SSI benefits, who did not file a tax return for 2018 or 2019, will also need to go to the IRS’s Non-Filers website to enter their information.

Lastly, for Social Security retirement, survivors, or disability beneficiaries who do not have qualifying children under age 17, you do not need to take any action with the IRS.  You will automatically receive your $1,200 economic impact payment directly from the IRS as long as you received an SSA-1099 for 2019.

For SSI recipients who do not have qualifying children under age 17, we continue to work closely with Treasury in our efforts to make these payments automatically.  Please note that we will not consider Economic Impact Payments as income for SSI recipients.

The eligibility requirements and other information about the Economic Impact Payments can be found at the IRS’s Coronavirus Tax Relief and Economic Impact Payments page.  In addition, please continue to visit the IRS for the latest information.”

I recieve ssi on a debit card will I get the stimulus on that debit card

    • Someone o.

Yes, it will come onto the card.

    • Ghostbuster

Not currently. Some idiots keep spreading lies. As of now S.S.I. and V.A. recipients have to file. However, as Noone with Direct Express has access to their account number or routing number, Noone can input that information on the I.R.S. website. The Social Security Administration is still working to fix this. Literally read the whole article and all the comments and you will see this for yourself.

I just read that our Senator for Arkansas Tom Cotton has informed the IRS that individuals on SS Disability, Social Security etc…most are low income & there is no need for said individuals to file the tax return & that since like myself only make less than $10,000 a year is individuals & the elderly need to relieve our stimulus money ASAP. He also informed the IRS that most people on SS Disability or the elderly don’t have bank accounts that we are mostly receiving our Federal Payments on a FEDRAL DIRECT EXPRESS CARD & that tons of Americans that really need this money ASAP could receive it a lot faster if the IRS would approve having the stimulus money put on our Federal Direct Express Card & it would be so much safer with the scammers already out there. SOOOO I AM HOPING & PRAYING THAT THE IRS LISTENED TO THE STATE. SENATORS AND WILL LISTEN TO THEM THEREFORE PUTTING EVERYONES MONEY ON THEIR FEDERALLY ISSUES DIRECT EXPRESS CARD!

My 17 yr old son (in 11th grade) receives social sec survivors benefits, is he qualified to receive a stimulus payment? Also, I filed my taxes and claim him as a dependent… I already received my stimulus payment of $1,200… will I receive an additional $500 for my 17 yr?

    • Joey G.

I’m currently 18, a High School Senior, but receive checks solely under my name, and am claimed as a dependent. Looking for a an answer to a similar situation

    • Betty

No It’s supposed to be any child 16 and under

How does the stimulus payments work for a mother and toddler who are both SSI recipients? Will I still receive $500 for my son?

    • Vonda V.

Hi Samantha, thank you for your question. For SSI recipients, especially those who have qualifying children under age 17, to receive the full amount of the Economic Impact Payments that you and your family are eligible for, go to the IRS’s Non-Filers: Enter Payment Info page and provide information about yourself and your qualifying children. We hope this helps!

I have received SSDI since 2003. My daughter is a full time college student and my dependent. She is 22 yrs old. She also had an Income of $8000 last year and did file her taxes. Will she get a stimulus check since she worked and filed taxes? Or will I receive $500 payment since she is my dependent? Or do our dependent children over the age of 17 but who are attending college full time fall the the cracks on receiving any stimulis

    • Peter

Your daughter gets zero, because you claim her as a dependent, i would think your getting the extra 500.00 since your on SSDI

      • Heather H.

Peter wtf are you talking about? She will not get an extra $500. If she wouldn’t have claimed her daughter, her daughter would’ve qualified for her own $1200, but since the mother claimed her, the mother will get $1200 and that is it because her daughter is over 16. Please dont misinform people. Thanks

N if u r not sure if u get a ssa 1099 u can access ur ssi on the internet from ssi portal n it will tell u if u got n ssa1099 n if u do u can down load a copy of it

Living as a retiree outside the USA in Andorra which depends on Spain’s Embassy do I have the right to get the 1200+500.. I am a widow beneficiary..Not everybody is wealthy in Andorra and the reason for living there was that life was very very cheap. It changed completely by the time I became a widow. This country lives for the wealthy and HATE AMERICANS LIKE ME!

  8. Cindy

I recieve ssi n disability my bf claimed me as dependent will I recieve stimulus payment yes or no?

    • Monique M.

Nope! Anyone claimed on someone else’s taxes does not receive a check

    • Tiff

I don’t see anything on the irs page about people that is on ssi get claim dependent won’t be not getting a check so maybe you will 🙂 all it said You can be claimed as a dependent on someone else’s return. For example, this would include a child, student or older dependent who can be claimed on a parent’s return won’t be getting the checks . that’s is from the irs

      • Heather H.

Tiff you’re very wrong. Any adult on ssi/ssdi/VA will not be eligible for the stimulus check if they were claimed as a dependent on someone else’s taxes.

        • Tiff

Look at the irs it doesn’t say anything about being on ssi and get claimed dependent won’t get it it is a toss up so I don’t believe anything about this they change there minds all the time

          • Juliana

Hello I’m juliana please help! I am on ssi and was claimed as dependent on my moms taxes she filed head of household, but she did not receive any funding/ extra money for claiming me. I filled out the non filers form and checked the box that states I was claimed as a dependent on someone’s taxes. My non filers form was still approved immediately. I am just waiting to be eligible it says approved but to wait for eligibility. Does this mean I will receive the $1200. Please help!

            Juliana

I have a concern that because the IRS has made a decision that I have an annual salary of $200,000+ because my 2018 taxes show I took our money from retirement to buy a house. But I only make like $30,000 a year. My 2019 taxes are being done as we speak and will show that I only have SS check — I have no job because I’m retired and receive no dividends or extra payments from retirement. So my question is: “Am I going to no receive a stimulus check if my 2018 tax form is used, if my 2019 doesn’t show up in time?”

PS…. Due to buying my house with retirement monie, my monthly SS check was lowered for 2020 and it makes me draw from my retirement now to make my bills. Thank you, Judy

I have heard that people who receive food stamps, will get an increase on their stamps Is this true, and if so how long will they get them for, thru this mess that we are all in And also I forgot to ask also how much will the extra amount be?

    • Heather H.

Its only people who dont receive the maximum amount of food stamps. So they’ll make up the difference. Varies on state and family size.

    • No S.

I got a additional increase to set me back up to the max for the state of Florida. No notification, no news on the DCF site, no information on the news from our fast mumbo jumbo talking Governor…
Maybe I missed it in one of his press briefings, but who can decipher what he’s saying between all the ummm’s & ahhh’s.

      Getting fed up here…
