New Guidance about COVID-19 Economic Impact Payments

“The Treasury Department launched a new web tool allowing quick registration for Economic Impact Payments for eligible individuals who do not normally file a tax return, and also announced that it would begin making automatic payments.  However, for some people receiving benefits from the Social Security Administration—specifically those who have dependent children under the age of 17—it is to their advantage to go to this portal to ensure they also get the $500 per dependent Economic Impact Payment.  I encourage them to do this as soon as possible, and want to provide the following details:

People who receive Social Security retirement, survivors, or disability insurance benefits and who did not file a tax return for 2018 or 2019 and who have qualifying children under age 17 should now go to the IRS’s webpage to enter their information instead of waiting for their automatic $1,200 Economic Impact Payment.  By taking proactive steps to enter information on the IRS website about them and their qualifying children, they will also receive the $500 per dependent child payment in addition to their $1,200 individual payment.  If Social Security beneficiaries in this group do not provide their information to the IRS soon, they will have to wait to receive their $500 per qualifying child.

The same new guidance also applies to SSI recipients, especially those who have qualifying children under age 17.  To receive the full amount of the Economic Impact Payments you and your family are eligible for, go to the IRS’s Non-Filers: Enter Payment Info page and provide information about yourself and your qualifying children.

Additionally, any new beneficiaries since January 1, 2020, of either Social Security or SSI benefits, who did not file a tax return for 2018 or 2019, will also need to go to the IRS’s Non-Filers website to enter their information.

Lastly, for Social Security retirement, survivors, or disability beneficiaries who do not have qualifying children under age 17, you do not need to take any action with the IRS.  You will automatically receive your $1,200 economic impact payment directly from the IRS as long as you received an SSA-1099 for 2019.

For SSI recipients who do not have qualifying children under age 17, we continue to work closely with Treasury in our efforts to make these payments automatically.  Please note that we will not consider Economic Impact Payments as income for SSI recipients.

The eligibility requirements and other information about the Economic Impact Payments can be found at the IRS’s Coronavirus Tax Relief and Economic Impact Payments page.  In addition, please continue to visit the IRS for the latest information.”

i made 150,000 in 2019, which includes my ssi. I was laid off 3 weeks ago and i’m not going back to work i’m 70 so not collecting unemployment. But now my income is 33,000……would i qualify for the check?

    • Someone w.

How do you get disability yet earn $150,000? Sounds like a scam to me.

      • larry f.

exactly. how the hell did you get govt. help, while earning $150,000.00?? as they say, something stinks in Denmark! hope the powers that be, are reading this, and take evasive action. la

      • Lynn C.

because once you reach full retirement age you’re allowed to make whatever the hell you want because that’s his own pension

    • Truly d.

How in the world could you make $150,000 a year and get SSI? That’s ludicrous there are people that are truly disabled and unable to work and can only get SSDI no SSI. It makes no sense. It just doesn’t seem possible to me that you could make that money and get SSI most people have to fight to get SSDI and use lawyers they get a percentage of the back SSDI if they win. I was lucky if you consider having a litany of health problems that now isolate me due to being sick, tired and can barely walk due to 9 surgeries over the past 6 years lucky but I received 2 1/2 years pay from my employer and when it stopped in May 2008 I didn’t File for my Social Security disability because I believe and then I will get better and return to work but it wasn’t happening so I handed it in the needed paperwork in November 2008 and received my first Social Security disability check in February 2009 plus a back check for 3 years of SSDI benefits.
If you are really getting ssi and you made 150 grand you scammed them somehow and abused the system. If you filed taxes for the 150 grand I don’t t believe you will get a check it doesn’t matter what you made this year. Shame on you for taking advantage of out taxes and somehow getting SSI. I make to much money per government guidelines to receive SSI in addition to my SSDI SSI is for people who earn low wages that’s why it’s supplemental security income. Are you sure you didn’t mean you get social security due to your age that would make more sense.

I just retired on July1.19.I did file the 18s taxes but have not done 19 yet. I do receive SS and my money was cut to a 1/4 of what I made while working. Do I need to go to the IRS page or no??

    • OE P.

If you are getting SS, then no.

    • Vonda V.

Hi Diana. Thank you for your question. Economic impact payments will be made to eligible people who receive Social Security retirement, disability, or survivors benefits. The IRS will use SSA-1099 information that we provide them to automatically generate $1,200 economic impact payments to eligible Social Security beneficiaries who did not file tax returns in 2018 or 2019. Please visit http://www.irs.gov/coronavirus to learn more.

  3. OE P.

KEEP IN MIND THIS PAYMENT IS COMING FROM THE IRS, NOT SSA. SO IT WILL EITHER BE BY DIRECT DEPOSIT, OR IN THE MAIL.

  4. Kat

Hi. I receive SSI, do i need to file for taxes even though i never file taxes in my life? And where do i get form-1099? I checked my social security account and the only thing i see under documents is a replacement card. Stay safe everyone. God bless you all.

    • Vonda V.

Hi Kat, thank you for your question. SSI recipients do not receive an SSA-1099. For SSI recipients to receive the full amount of the Economic Impact Payments, they need to go to the IRS’s Non-Filers: Enter Payment Info page and provide information about themselves. We hope this helps.

  5. Laura

So, 18 yo dependent still going to high school and drawing SSI. Claimed as dependent on My income tax. Too old for $500 but will he get $1200? Should I file IRS short form?

    • Heather H.

No your son wont qualify because you claimed him as a dependent on your taxes.

    • Vonda V.

Hi Laura, thank you for your question. For SSI recipients to receive the full amount of the Economic Impact Payments, they need to go to the IRS’s Non-Filers: Enter Payment Info page and provide information about themselves. We hope this helps.

Will people who receive social security benefits by direct deposit and file a tax return receive
the stimulus by direct deposit if there is no direct deposit information on the tax return ?
I received my 2019 refund by check,
I have never put direct deposit information on any tax return.
SSA has my direct deposit information. Will the treasury get it from SSA?

    • Andrea s.

I have direct express debt card to and my ssi/ ssd they go on my direct express card i wonder if the covid 19 check will go on there i don’t have a banking account

      • Danie M.

I believe it will go on your direct express card. It is a government ran program for people who get benefits from the government. Irs is part of the government. I could be wong

    • Groundnpound

Then you will be mailed a check. Did you read the info?

  7. Kathryn A.

How can I find out if I filed in 2018. I just don’t remember. I live out of the country but am an American but the website won’t let me register as I do not have a US address. I have recieved my statement in past years.

    • Vonda V.

Hi Kathryn. Thank you for your question. You do not need to take any action with the IRS. You will automatically receive your $1,200 economic impact payment directly from the IRS as long as you received an SSA-1099 for 2019. Subscribe and stay up to date with the latest Social Security information on Coronavirus (COVID-19).

Why is it that those who file a tax return get benefits from unemployment for 39 months, are guaranteed to get back work pay from their employer, plus additional money for each child. I know someone who will be making $8,000.00 for COVID-19, yet the poorest of the poor who don’t even make $15,000.00 a year on disability get a one time stimulus for $1,200.00. We also have bills to pay, such as rent, cable, and food. We can’t even get the food or supplies we need due to all the hoarders. We can’t just stop making payments for 3 months and then get hit with a lump sum like everyone else because then we really would end up with zero dollars, and that buys nothing. Small businesses get the same deal as those who work, only they’ll be getting even more so that they can pay all their employees who got laid off and that’s if they bring them all back. Money’s being given in very generous amounts to everyone except the ones who rely on SSI/SSD. Not fair. The poor stay poor exactly because of State and federal misuse of funding once in the hands of government and their still crying that it’s not enough. 2 trillion dollars not enough. And people on SSD are supposed to live off less than $15,000.00 a year. Total bill passed and signed by Trump $6.2 trillion. Give me a break man. How many mansions does one need. I speak for all on SSI/SSD. We’re just trying to make a living like everyone else. BE FAIR and have empathy for us and at least consider adding an additional $1,200.00 for the 4 months of the covid19 plaque. N.J residents

Stfup I have worked from the day I was 12 years old and I was taught that if I wanted to purchase now this might take u back a bubble watch I needed to earn my own money so I did by babysitting, flyers and newspapers and scooped water ice while my mom took me to hers place of employment I also began working with papers and then wala I found a great job and was actually very ready ty mom and dad I am now 58 and became very very ill I am constantly in pain and in the hospital for no less than 19 fn days at a shot however I had a wonderful experience and career always paid my taxes raised 3 now amazing adult children who have their own children and they are all so very very much responsible in fact all essential workers that included their spouses hmm health care front line taking care of more of Philadelphia people and then having to bring it home to the children and ????‍♀️ They get notta my daughter and her husband are airman that’s military Air Force for the past 18 years and have 3 amazing children my family means the world to me and they thank me? So I am now getting disability and counseling and studying for my exams after being sick and in bound I cannot just wait for money to fall out of the sky and do not enjoy sitting on my a&& as I am positive I will pass graduate and then begin working for real pay with the best neuroscientists alive today I am also going to say ty for ssd as it allowed my healing process as well I would like to say my former career was very good and that hurt to be broken however I saw and know some of the stunts that people of all ethnic groups pull and I wanna tell ya I had to service many of them in all maybe a handful even deserve it that’s SSI. And then 5-6-7 children skinny and out of hand were diagnosed with a disability so mom if you want to even call her that collected a bundle and then she still did nothing for her self and feeding the children well they sold the fs and had the best medical insurance around. I as well as many others worked for that!!!! So I might add where I actually worked I saw everything and then some. By the way the doctor diagnosing the recipients of ssi are quacks and you are also going to know that they never have enough so they supplement income by selling the drugs prescribed to the children their parents and themselves son don’t feel sorry for them they know how to this day to work the system no matter how many revamps are done to stop fraud. I don’t believe that I am reading the crap that people are posting I was curious and wanted to stop the mathematical information highway in my head sorry I even looked at this. I am blessed with such amazing kindness and love and intelligence and family thank you ?? I am actually also able to blow off the nonsense and non inspirational people that might think this is draining my energy! NottA I just always want peace of mind for all no matter who you are and what you do and hint there’s no such thing if you are the type of people I have described. So I will respect those who are actually doing! Always someone who really needs help! So I would rather hope that I remember early morning to be thankful for breathing and then an opportunity to have another day and will continue to be me and that’s not to seek so much to be consoled as to console to not seek so much to be understood as To understand and to be loved as to love with all my heart and soul. • OE P.

It id my understanding that checks will either be Direct Deposit to your bank, or in the mail. It is not coming from Social Security, but from the IRS.

    • Tom

As of now Direct Express doesn’t know themselves.

    • Vonda V.

Hi There. Thank you for using our blog to ask your question. It is Treasury, not Social Security, that will be making direct payments to eligible people. We continue to work closely with Treasury to address outstanding questions in an attempt to make the issuance of these payments as quick and efficient as possible. We realize people are concerned, and the IRS will provide additional information at http://www.irs.gov/coronavirus when available.

    • Vonda V.

Hi there. Thank you for your question. It is Treasury, not Social Security, that makes the economic impact payments and we are unable to answer specific questions. Please continue to check our COVID-19 page as well as the IRS Economic Income Payments web page for additional information when it becomes available. Thank you.
