New Fact Sheets Added to Your Online Statement

Your Social Security Statement, available on my Social Security, tells you how much you or your family can expect to receive in disability, survivor, and retirement benefits.

We’ve added new fact sheets to accompany the online Statement. These new fact sheets provide clarity and useful information, based on your age group and earnings situation. They can also help you better understand Social Security programs and benefits.

You can access your Statement and the new fact sheets using your personal my Social Security account.

The new Statement fact sheets cover the following topics:

  • Retirement readiness for workers in four different age groups.
  • Workers with non-covered earnings who may be subject to the Windfall Elimination Provision and Government Pension Offset.
  • Social Security basics for new workers.
  • How people become eligible for benefits (for workers not fully insured).
  • How additional work can increase your future benefits.
  • Medicare readiness for workers age 62 and up.

If you don’t have a my Social Security account, be sure to create one so you can access your Statement, fact sheets, and other useful information about Social Security. You can create your personal my Social Security account on our website.

Divorced after 20+ years. Ex-husband always out earned me. He retired from post office under civil service, so his SSI was reduced.
If I apply under his income, would the amount I receive also be reduced because of his civil service?
Or would the amount I receive be based on his social security before the civil service reduction? (I was a federal employee for 10+ years under FERS. I don’t know if this is a factor or not.) Thanks.

Hi, Sharon. To be eligible for divorced spouse benefits, you had to be married to your former spouse for at least 10 years, and you cannot be eligible for a higher benefit on your own record. For more information on how to qualify for divorced spouse benefits, visit our Benefits Planner: If You Are Divorced. We hope this helps.

Good morning – I applied and was accepted for ss benefits at 62 on Oct 1st 2021 the only problem is when i read my awards letter it states i am eligible for benefits but the benefit listed is $0.00 amount why would it say that i have worked 43 yrs have earned my credits for my benefit. Is it because i am still working and my last day of work is Sept 30th 2021? or is there a mistake on my account?

    • Teresa L.

Nevermind -I called and a very nice guy explained what i did and that i would have to appeal but he fixed it for me while i was on the phone. Because of my answer on the income for 2021 i messed up. thank god i called i would have been getting no money at all.

Can my husband receive his pension before/as he is applying for SSDI. Vonda did answer my question about he can receive his pension while on SSDI; but I just want to make sure that he can be receiving it durning the application process. Thank you

    • V.V.

Hi Mo: Your husband’s pension will not affect his SSDI if it isn’t a non-covered pension. It doesn’t matter when he receives or applies for it.

My husband had to leave work after 35 years, he is 61 COPD, AFIB ect. He has a Pension from this company (social security taxes were always taken out of his pay check). Can he take his pension as we need income to pay for insurance; as he is going to apply for social security disability?

    • V.V.

Hi Mo, thanks for reaching out. We pay disability benefits through two programs: the Social Security Disability Insurance program (SSDI) and the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program. To qualify for SSDI benefits, you must have worked long enough and recently enough in jobs covered by Social Security (usually within the last 10 years). Receiving a pension will not affect SSDI benefits. The (SSI) program is a needs based program that gives cash assistance to disabled individuals with limited income and resources. We pay disability benefits to people who are unable to work because of a medical condition that is expected to last one year or more or to end in death. Receiving a pension could affect SSI benefits. If he would like to apply, he can use our online application.

If unable or would rather not apply online, he can call us at 1-800-772-1213 for assistance or contact his local Social Security office. Please look for the general inquiry telephone number at the Social Security Office Locator. The number may appear under Show Additional Office Information. Please be aware that our call wait times are longer than normal. We hope this information helps.

      • Mo R.

Thank you for your reply. I just want to understand one thing, we can go ahead and take his pension while applying for SSDI. Is that correct? Thank you

        • V.V.

Hi Mo. A non-covered pension, a pension based on work that is not covered by Social Security (for example, Federal civil service and some State or local government agencies such as police officers and some teachers), may cause the amount of your Social Security benefit to be reduced. A covered pension based on work that is covered by Social Security does not affect Social Security benefits.

i just received social security disability so now how do i put a survivor beneficiary on it ? and if i apply for my early retirement through carpenters union since i am 60 will it affect my disability insurance?

    • A.C.

Hi, Jeff. Thanks for your question. When a person dies, family members may be eligible for Survivors Benefits based on the deceased worker’s earnings. For more information about what may affect your disability payments, please visit our Frequently Asked Questions. We hope this helps.
