How do I obtain an activation code

    • Ann C.

Hi, Sharon. An activation code is given to those who visit their local Social Security office. A representative in the office will verify your identity and issue you an activation code. If you are unable to create an account or encounter a problem with your personal my Social Security account, you may:
•Call us at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778), Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. At the voice prompt, say “helpdesk”; or
•Contact your local Social Security office. We hope this helps.

I received a reset code for my account, but the directions in the letter are unclear (typical government agency garbage). The directions do not say where the code should be entered, so I did a search on reset code and was directed to this page which absolutely worthless. Thias is NOT a help page, it is an advertisement page.

This is the most unfriendly website! I have wasted hours trying to access my information again. I have requested and received a temporary password that the system will not accept. Today, it won’t accept my name! This is NOT a timesaver, by any definition!!

Please change the witholding amount for Federal tax on my social security proceeds.

    • Vonda V.

Hi Pamela, thank you for using our blog. To change your voluntary tax withholding, you’ll need a Form W-4V from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). You can download the form or call the IRS toll-free at 1-800-829-3676 and ask for Form W-4V. Sign the form and return it to your local Social Security office by mail or in person.
