Get Your Social Security Benefit Statement
Reading Time: 2 MinutesLast Updated: November 3, 2023
Tax season is approaching, and we have made replacing your annual Benefit Statement even easier. The Benefit Statement, also known as the SSA-1099 or the SSA-1042S, is a tax form we mail each year in January to people who receive Social Security benefits. It shows the total amount of benefits you received from us in the previous year so you know how much Social Security income to report to the IRS on your tax return.
If you live in the United States and you need a replacement form SSA-1099 or SSA-1042S, simply go online and get an instant, printable replacement form using your personal my Social Security account. A replacement SSA-1099 or SSA-1042S is available for the previous tax year after February 1.
If you already have a personal my Social Security account, you can log in to your account to view and print your SSA-1099 or SSA-1042S. If you don’t have access to a printer, you can save the document to your computer or email it to yourself. If you don’t have a personal my Social Security account, creating one is very easy to do and usually takes less than 10 minutes.
If you’re a non-citizen who lives outside of the United States and you received or repaid Social Security benefits last year, we will send you form SSA-1042S in the mail. The forms SSA-1099 and SSA-1042S are not available for people who receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits.
With a personal my Social Security account, you can do much of your business with us online. If you receive benefits or have Medicare, your personal my Social Security account is also the best way to:
- Request a replacement Social Security number card (in most states and the District of Columbia).
- Get your benefit verification letter.
- Check your benefit and payment information.
- Change your address and phone number.
- Change your direct deposit information.
- Request a replacement Medicare card.
- Report your wages if you work and receive Social Security disability insurance or SSI benefits.

My husband received his SSA-1099 for 2020, but the amount on it is incorrect. How does he get a corrected one? Exactly what number should he call or address to write to? Should he just return it to the Baltimore office that sent it with a note asking for a corrected one?
V.V.
Hi Katherine, thanks for using our blog. Your husband can call his local Social Security office. Please look for the general inquiry telephone number at the Social Security Office Locator. The number may appear under Show Additional Office Information. Please be aware that our call wait times are longer than normal. We hope this information helps.

I turned 65 on 1/1/21 and started receiving social security November 2020 along with Medicare part A and B in December 2020. I am trying to file my 2020 taxes but haven’t received my SSA-1099 as yet. I have an online account with my Social Security but the SSA-1099 is not available online in my account either

Hi, Cristina, thanks for using our blog. We apologize for your frustration. Please check out our Frequently Asked Questions webpage for details on how to get a Social Security Statement. If you and your husband would like to receive your Statements by mail, each of you should print and complete a “Request For Social Security Statement” (Form SSA-7004) and mail them to the address provided on the forms. You should receive your paper Statements in the mail in 4-6 weeks. We hope this helps.

My mom passed away in June of 2020 and her house was sold the same year. The mail is being forwarded to another address. Unfortunately, my mom’s SSA 1099 has not been received as of yet (i.e. 2/10/20). How can I get a timely copy?
V.V.
We are very sorry for your loss, Candace. The SSA-1099 is mailed in January to the last address in our records and is intended for the spouse or executor of the deceased. If you do not have access to the mail at that address, the executor will need to call the local field office. Please look for the general inquiry telephone number at the Social Security Office Locator. The number may appear under Show Additional Office Information. Please be aware that our call wait times are longer than normal. We hope this information helps.

Still have not received 1099 from Social Security, in past years have received usually by second or third week of January. With the Unemployment fraud occurring due to the pandemic should I be afraid that the sensitive information on the 1099 could be compromised?

I set up my mother’s social security online account years ago. I accidentally put wrong password in and called to have it reset. The lady at sicial security said that I would have to have my mom whom is 98 and in nursing home for last 4 years to okay it. I told the lady that I had all the answers to the questions they could ask and I was power of attorney along with my brother. She said no. What can i do? I need the 2021 statement so i can see what i will be paying nursing home in 2021.
V.V.
Hi Dolores, thanks for using our blog. Because of privacy and security concerns, you will not be able to conduct Social Security business on behalf of your mother unless you are her representative payee. Having a power of attorney, being an authorized representative, or having a joint bank account with your mother does not authorize you to access information on her Social Security record. If your mother does not have a representative payee and she is not capable of managing and directing her Social Security benefits, you should consider applying to be her payee. To learn more about becoming a representative payee, you can read our publication, “A Guide for Representative Payees” or visit our Representative Payee webpage.
You can call your local Social Security office to apply to be your mother’s representative payee. Please look for the general inquiry telephone number at the Social Security Office Locator. The number may appear under Show Additional Office Information. Please be aware that our call wait times are longer than normal. We hope this information helps.
