Get Your Social Security Benefit Statement

Tax season is approaching, and we have made replacing your annual Benefit Statement even easier. The Benefit Statement, also known as the SSA-1099 or the SSA-1042S, is a tax form we mail each year in January to people who receive Social Security benefits. It shows the total amount of benefits you received from us in the previous year so you know how much Social Security income to report to the IRS on your tax return.
If you live in the United States and you need a replacement form SSA-1099 or SSA-1042S, simply go online and get an instant, printable replacement form using your personal my Social Security account. A replacement SSA-1099 or SSA-1042S is available for the previous tax year after February 1.
If you already have a personal my Social Security account, you can log in to your account to view and print your SSA-1099 or SSA-1042S. If you don’t have access to a printer, you can save the document to your computer or email it to yourself. If you don’t have a personal my Social Security account, creating one is very easy to do and usually takes less than 10 minutes.
If you’re a non-citizen who lives outside of the United States and you received or repaid Social Security benefits last year, we will send you form SSA-1042S in the mail. The forms SSA-1099 and SSA-1042S are not available for people who receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits.
With a personal my Social Security account, you can do much of your business with us online. If you receive benefits or have Medicare, your personal my Social Security account is also the best way to:
- Request a replacement Social Security number card (in most states and the District of Columbia).
- Get your benefit verification letter.
- Check your benefit and payment information.
- Change your address and phone number.
- Change your direct deposit information.
- Request a replacement Medicare card.
- Report your wages if you work and receive Social Security disability insurance or SSI benefits.

My spouse’s initial 2020 SSA-1099 included the $ paid directly to his attorney. Spouse just received a new 2020 SSA-1099 which no longer lists the $ paid to his attorney. Why? Do we need to do something?

My mother received monthly Social Security benefits. She passed away in 2020. Will we still receive her 2020 SSA-1099 in the mail? I’m the executor of her estate and will be filing this final tax return on her behalf. Hi Melinda, thanks for using our blog to ask your question. The SSA-1099 is mailed in January to the last address in our records and is intended for the spouse or executor of the deceased. If you do not have access to the mail at that address, the executor will need to call the local field office after February 1, 2021. How do I get a corrected SSA-1099?
I received the 1099 for my husband who died in October 2020. The amount on the document equals what he would have received if he had been paid for the entire year, rather than the amount he was actually paid. (His October payment was “reclaimed” and no further payments were received for the year.)

I understand SSA is supposed to mail it sometime this month (January), but COVID-19 has adversely impacted the timing of routine services causing delays.

I have just applied, January, for benefits & saw that there was an option to have taxes withheld but can’t find where I need to enter/select this option. Where do I do this? I have not received a check yet is there a different process?

Thank you for your question, Kristi. You can download the form or call the IRS toll-free at 1-800-829-3676 and ask for Form W-4V. When you complete the form, you can choose to have 7, 10, 12, or 22 percent of your monthly benefit withheld for taxes. Mail the completed, signed form to your local Social Security office. I prepare the tax returns for my mother in law. She normally receives her SS checks on or about the 1st-3rd of each month. Since that was a holiday weekend, she receive the payment on December 31, 2020. Will this January payment that was paid on December 31 be included in the 1099 for 2020 or 2021?

When the January 3 check delivery date falls on a non-banking day and the first previous banking day is in the previous year, we deliver the January benefit check in December. However, for taxation of benefits purposes, the check for January 3 that we issued in late December is treated as if we issued it in the year associated with the intended January 3 delivery date.
