A Social Security 1099 is a tax form Social Security mails each year in January to people who receive Social Security benefits. It shows the total amount of benefits you received from Social Security in the previous year so you know how much Social Security income to report to the IRS on your tax return.

I am my mother’s POA and she has moved to an assisted living facility. How do I update her address and creat an account on mysocialsecurity. I assume her SSA-1099 form was returned in January since she moved November 2019.

Hi Sylvie, thank you for using our blog. Because of privacy and security concerns, you will not be able to conduct Social Security business on behalf of your mother unless you are her representative payee. Having a power of attorney, being an authorized representative, or having a joint bank account with your mother does not authorize you to access information on her Social Security record. If your mother does not have a representative payee and she is not capable of managing and directing her Social Security benefits, someone should consider applying to be her payee. To learn more about becoming a representative payee, you can read our publication, “A Guide for Representative Payees” or visit our Representative Payee webpage. You can call us at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778) to make an appointment or you can contact your local Social Security office. Please look for the general inquiry telephone number at the Social Security Office Locator. The number may appear under Show Additional Office Information. Please be aware that our call wait times are longer than normal. We hope this information helps.

If your mother is capable of managing her benefits, she may be able to request the needed information online. See our Change of Address web page for details.

I need a 2019 SSA-1099/SSA-1042S for my cousin who died in Feb. 2020 to send to his tax preparer. I have a my social security account but it says I can’t use it to get a form for him. So, how do I go about getting the form?

    • Vonda V.

We’re sorry to hear about your loss, Jack. The benefit statement is mailed to the last address in our records and is intended for the spouse or executor of the deceased. If you do not have access to the mail at that address, the executor will need to go into the local field office with proof of death and proof of executorship. An SSA-1099 can also be given to someone receiving benefits on the deceased beneficiary’s record such as a spouse, parent, or child of the deceased. Unfortunately, you may need to wait for the offices to reopen. We apologize for the inconvenience.

I hve tried to enter my account, which shows with my e-mail address and my stored password, but it informs me that the information doesn`t exist.
I then tried to create a new account, and it kept telling me that I had to enter the social security number without hyphens, when there were no hyphens.
Finally, I tried calling and all I got was loud noises as if I was connecting with an active dial-up internet connection.
I need my SSA-1099 pronto. How can I get it?
    Thank you,
    Ron Pinto
