Tax season is approaching, and Social Security has made replacing your annual Benefit Statement even easier. The Benefit Statement is also known as the SSA-1099 or the SSA-1042S. Now you can get a copy of your 1099 anytime and anywhere you want using our online services.

A Social Security 1099 is a tax form Social Security mails each year in January to people who receive Social Security benefits. It shows the total amount of benefits you received from Social Security in the previous year so you know how much Social Security income to report to the IRS on your tax return.

If you live in the United States and you need a replacement form SSA-1099 or SSA-1042S, simply go online and request an instant, printable replacement form through your personal my Social Security account.

A replacement SSA-1099 or SSA-1042S is available for the previous tax year after February 1.

If you already have a my Social Security account, you can log in to your online account to view and print your SSA-1099 or SSA-1042S. If you don’t have access to a printer, you can save the document on your computer or laptop or even email it. If you don’t have a my Social Security account, creating one is very easy to do and usually takes less than 10 minutes.

If you receive benefits or have Medicare, your my Social Security account is also the best way to:

  • Get your benefit verification letter;
  • Check your benefit and payment information;
  • Change your address and phone number;
  • Change your direct deposit information;
  • Request a replacement Medicare card; or
  • Report your wages if you work and receive Social Security disability insurance or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits.

If you’re a noncitizen who lives outside of the United States and you received or repaid Social Security benefits last year, we will send you form SSA-1042S in the mail. The forms SSA-1099 and SSA-1042S are not available for people who receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI).

    Is this form sent to the IRS by the Social Security Department so they know how much I made last year from SS? To get the stimulus check is it my responsibility to send the IRS this form,because I still have not got my check which should go to the bank where my SS benefit is directly deposited?

    • Vonda V.

      Hi James, thank you for your question. The Internal Revenue Service, which is part of the Department of Treasury, will be making Economic Income Payments to eligible people. To help you quickly and easily determine whether you need to take any action to receive your Economic Impact Payment, check out the step-by-step instructions on the Social Security and Coronavirus web page.

    Hello I have tried unsuccessfully to create a ss account. I am resident in the UK and get monthly ss deposits. My address is in the UK
    My email address is monroeaa@msn.com
    Can you please let me know if it is possible to create an account?
    Thank you, Josephine Monroe

    • Vonda V.

      Hi Josephine, thank you for your question. At this time you must have a U. S. mailing address to create or access your online account. The “my Social Security” authentication system requires address verification as one of the essential criteria for issuing an account. People with APO/FPO/DPO addresses can create an account overseas, but our system does not support registration and account creation for users with a foreign address yet.

      We recommend that individuals living outside the United States contact the nearest Federal Benefit Unit or U.S. embassy in the area for any assistance related to Social Security programs and benefits. Also, our Office of International Operations home page provides more information to assist our customers living abroad.

    Why is my and other people’s personal information shown on this website….I not happy about that at all.

    My income for 2019 was much reduced from 2018 and SS used my 2018 numbers. My 2019 tax return was submitted about 3 weeks ago, therefore adjustments regarding IRMA need to delete my penalties so that for 2020 beginning in Jan 2020 I should receive more income from SS. I called SS at least 2 weeks ago and explained my issue and they said I have to have a phone meeting with SS, but they had no appointments and would call me back……well that didn’t happen and I need the additional money since I have been ill since Oct. 2018 continuing to the present and have had to payout enormous amounts of money. I was wondering why they just can’t look at both my 2018 and 2019 retires to make the adjustments?

    • Vonda V.

      Hi Kathleen, thank you for using our blog. If you’ve had a major life-changing event and your income has gone down, complete and return our life-changing event form to your local Social Security office to request a reduction in your income-related monthly adjustment amount.
