Hi Barbara, thanks for reading our blog and for your question. We mailed the COLA notices throughout the month of December to retirement, survivors, and disability beneficiaries, SSI recipients, and representative payees. You can also securely view and save the Social Security COLA notice online via the Message Center inside your my Social Security account . If you don’t have an account, create one today.
If you’re unable to obtain the COLA notice, check out our Frequently Asked Questions web page for details on how to get a benefit verification letter. This letter is sometimes called a budget letter, a benefits letter, a proof of income letter or a proof of award letter. You also may be able to request a benefit verification letter by using our automated telephone service at 1-800-772-1213. You can conduct the automated services 24 hours a day. Good day to you:
I am the personal representative for my father who passed away in May 2020. I have all of my father’s postal mail sent to my home address, but have not yet received the Form SSA-1099 Social Security Benefit Statement for 2020. Filing his 2020 taxes is the last step to complete to finalize and close out his estate.
Could you please let me know how I can get his Form SSA-1099 for the year2020?
Thank you and kind regards,
S.D.
We’re sorry for your loss, Stephen. We mailed the SSA-1099 in January to the last address in our records, and it is intended for the spouse or executor of the deceased’s estate. If you did not receive the tax form, the executor should call the local field office. Please look for the general inquiry telephone number using the Social Security Office Locator. The number may appear under Show Additional Office Information. Our call volume and wait times are greater than normal, so please be patient. We hope this information helps.

I am unable to create an account and cannot reach anybody. Call-back is unavailable, I am currently on hold (20 minutes), and the website states I have to call first to visit a location. That leaves this as a last resort. I need a statement. I have been paying into this for 40 years, and now that I need something, it seems impossible to reach you by any means. What can I do to speak with a person?
