You can use my Social Security to get a proof of benefits letter, change your address or phone number on our records, start or change your direct deposit, and check your benefit and payment information.

      • Hello,Im receiving SSDI and in 2013 i moved to Asia and married.Every month i have to sspend 25.00USDs on ATM fees here to get access to my SSDI monies.I have direct deposit in my WELLS FARGO back home but that does not help me.When will you set up an easier way for us Americans on SS to have cheaper access to our SSDI payments.

  3. Even a small raise would be nice since this administration believes if it lies about the COLA it will be OK, Lying does nothing to keep me from falling behind in my poor standard of living !

    • You do not understand how the COLA is actually determined Robert. Congress established the formula used to calculate the amount of the increase, and that formula is applied to the cost of living data which is compiled by the Department of Labor on a regular basis. Under the law, no part of the Executive Branch of the federal government, including the President, the Social Security Administration or the Labor Department, has any authority to change the amount of the COLA determined by the formula that was established by Congress, and only Congress can change that formula.

      • The problem is that we never “really” get that increase because Medicare costs are raised each and every time for the amount of the “few dollars extra” we are raised!

        If we are to believe that we receive “a raise” due to “cost of living,” and Medicare Part B takes it, then don’t we “actually” end up with LESS to live on?

        It’s really tough living on disability/a fixed income, and every single penny counts for us. I really wish someone could/would do something about all this. :/

    • I agree , I worked and paid Social Security from the age of 5 til 59 years old. From what I was making when I was working and when I went on disability is like going to the poverty level. What did the government do with all of that money? Sad!

  4. I recieve SSI and recently my wallet was stolen. I need to replace the card I was issued with that account. How do I replace it. I need it to get my disability discounts.

    • My friend is SSI. What kind of disability discounts are available. He needs help of all kinds. Bionic Man, a plate in his neck, just got a new shoulder and had 2 new knees in the last year. He still can’t get SS and he worked all of his life. T he last job was 22 years.

These services include Medicaid, free meals, housekeeping help, transportation or help with other problems. You can get information about services in your area from your state or local social services office. Or you can visit the U. S.   5. I have tried a few times to open an account but is always says my answers do not qualify. Strange because I have been receiving a SSC check for a few years.

  6. Dorothy J. Murphy: What is going on with SSA? Why can’t I get into my SS to see my account and benifit letter. Even though I have an e-mail and password account set up with SSA I can’t access my SSA at all. I have tryed for 4 days. Please tell me what is wrong. I haven’t recieved any new information for SS saying they would be off line and that I couldn’t access my SSA. Please tell me Why?

    • I have asked the SSA office several times tho I am disabled that I would like to file since I am 65 bug would like to wait til I am 68-70 to file for my regular SSA benefits. I was told since I am disabled I do not need. To file for regular benifits since I am disabled . I just need to know if I should be due more money? I can’t seem to get an answer to that question . Where do I go to check on this ? Thank you .

      • Your disability payment is the same amount you’d receive at your full retirement age. You are not due more,there is nothing to check out.

        • This reply is incorrect. You should be able to see your online statement will reflect that ssdi payments are a little higher than ss retirement. If your qualifying retirement age is 66, for example, you would then automatically be transferred from the ssdi category to ss retirement with no change in dollar amount.

When you receive disability benefits under the Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) program, we will automatically convert your disability benefits to retirement benefits, when you attain your full retirement age (currently 66). The benefit amount will generally remain the same.

    • I have had the same problem! I was unable to log in for about a week. I am finally able to log in but the site is plain print. I don’t know how to fix it. I have a Mac.

  7. SSA keeps on boasting its online services, but they will never accept or implement suggestions to improve online services. They would allow the recipient to change their bank info for Direct Deposit, but would not allow to change their tax withholding percentage online.
    After all it is my tax withheld!

    It took them 4 months, required to mail the form twice and make calls to finally change my tax withholding.

    Anybody would listens at SSA or give me one reason not to do this online?

  8. I love to join this wonderful services but unfortunately, you don’t allow American citizens who resides abroad to join although I received benefits over 10 years.

People with APO/FPO/DPO addresses can create an account overseas, but our system does not support registration and account creation for users with a foreign address yet.   9. As Dorothy Murphy said, she is unable to get into her SS account online. I am experiencing the same issue I believe. I can get past the login/password page to the page where I agree to the terms. As soon as I get to my benefit page it immediately goes back to the sign in page. I have attempted to do this multiple times and spoke to a representative on 2 occasions. I am still experiencing the same problem. Does this sound familiar to anyone else? Not sure where to go with this issue.

When I try to access a saved application for disability benefits online using my re-entry number, it tells me “your information does not match our records.” However, I was able to log in and out of the first portion of the online application several times and a couple times for the second, using my re-entry number, but now, it seems I am locked out of online access. Because my application is incomplete, I’m now receiving in the mail paper copies of the remaining sections of the application to complete instead of having the option to utilize the online platform to do so. Why is this? I would prefer to complete it online like I did for the first half of the application.

  12. I was declared totally disabled in 1992 or 3, and began receiving Social Security Disability payments in 1995 or 6 I believe. When my disease went into 90% remission I went to my Social Security person at his office and told him I was going to go back to work. The checks kept on coming, my attorney told me they were mine to keep for life, but back I went to see my Social Security guy at his office. He told me not to worry about it, asked if I was still disabled and I said yes but I’m earning way over the limit. I asked should I return the checks or what, again he told me don’t worry about it. When my disease came out of remission almost 15 years later, and the checks had stopped coming in 2005, I was told that I owed Social Security a huge sum of money. Being honest, hurt, and broke I made a deal to take early retirement at 62, and have Social Security take $348 out of each check. That was 6 years ago, full benefit payments were applied to the debt from 2010 to 2013 while I worked a menial job. Yet now I owe more than I started out owing due to interest added starting I don’t know when. I have done the right thing all the way down the line, and now that I need that income, totally disabled, over 65 still paying the $348 per month and all the debt does is increase. I did as told by Social Security personnel but I am being held responsible for their either lack of knowledge or a just don’t care attitude. This is not fair to me at all and I want to know how to fix it – still being honest and straightforward.

  13. I already have a SS account. I have been trying since June 19th to access socialsecurity.gov just for information without success. I have had no sucess in accessing anything on the site while all my other browsing on other sites in fine. Is the site down, if it is any prediction as to when it might be back up? Your assistance is appreciated. p.s. I have difficulity hearing via phone so try to do most of my business via email so calling the help desk is not an option for me.

  14. Mr. Fernandez, thank you for your response. However you need to see the pages of similiar comments being made about no access to the site on “Is It Down Now” (http://www.isitdownrightnow.com/ssa.gov.html) and other comment pages.
    Social Security encouraged everyone to depend on the site instead of paper or phone notices/help. Now that we do the site fails us. We expect more for our tax dollars this this. This is a serious issue for thousands of receiptants if the site cannot be depended upon. Thank you for the venue and opportunity to express concerns.

  17. I’ve been trying for several days to sign up for My Social Security, and I keep getting locked out. I’ve CALLED the help line, who (after confirming some information from me) unlocked my record so I could try again. Locked out again.

    I can’t even tell where the problem is, or if the problem is even on MY end. I know that the security questions I’m asked (prepared by Equifax, I’m told) are so obscure I don’t even know if I have the information for them. A few are usually dummy questions, but I’m not sure I remember the exact wording on my Social Security card–I don’t think I’ve seen it since I was 10 years old. Former phone numbers? I hardly use the phone, and don’t keep a running mental inventory of phone numbers from 5 years ago.

    All I want is acces to MY OWN INFORMATION. Fix this!!!

  18. Unfortunately the service is extremely limited. I receive SSD and applied for benefits for my children for Social Security’s request. I informed them that I was disabled but was told I didn’t have to come into the local office regardless. Even after a phone interview I was told I had to come in. I did so and completed the application. I informed worker that my child was going to have a legal name change – The representative told me it would not matter as disability payments are based on the Social Security number. A month later everything fell apart because of course it does matter.
    I was told I could not submit the new birth certificate electronically and again would have to come in in person to the local field office. My request to have taxes taken out of the new payment was denied because the name did not match the Social Security number for my son. I also cannot receive direct to posit for that check because of this issue. And of course the next appointment was a month away.

    Again, I need an appointment because I am disabled I cannot walk, stand, sit for long links of time – the definition of disability per social security regulations is that I’m unable to do these things. But I made the appointment, and my adult daughter drove me to the appointment here in Arizona in the 100° plus heat. I arrived at the local field office to hear that I did not have an appointment and that I needed to wait. And take a number.

    After the security guard check my daughters purse, she went to the other side of the building to make sure we were in the right place and was told we were. She came back and he check her purse for weapons again, and told us that we could wait for an open window and ask about the appointment. After 20 minutes we were able to get to someone who said we did not have an appointment and should check the other side of the building. We told her that we already had. Finally a supervisor discovered that we didn’t do you have an appointment half an hour ago. However the birth certificate with the name change from vital statistics was not sufficient and they needed the original court order. I were not told this on the phone, I was only told to bring his birth certificate and my ID. I told her that I had a photo of the certified court order on my phone and that since it was in color they could tell it was an original and I could email it to her to print. That was not sufficient and my adult daughter had to drive home while I waited laying down on two chairs, in excruciating pain, to get The certified court order.

    This entire time I was on hold with the 800-number. When I finally got back to a window and got the letter saying we would get the new Social Security card in 7 to 10 business days the customer service rep answered the call. It had been 52 minutes.

    I let the gentleman know that I had been, prior to becoming disabled, a supervisor at the disability determination services ministration – he department of the Social Security administration. I was appalled at the services that I had received. The office had horribly uncomfortable metal chairs, the screen for the numbers was broken, there was no water fountain and this is Phoenix and it is hotter than hell, we were treated like criminals and I do understand that they have to check for weapons but the man check my daughters purse four times, would not allow me to sit in the more comfortable chair by the window even after I explained that I had had brain surgery and for back procedures… They had no information on my appointment and made no effort to work with me on the court order issue.

    My son happens to be transgender. He has a Social Security card already, it is simply in the old name. I provided them the new birth certificate. He’s already in their system receiving benefits under his old name.

    This whole thing could’ve been done on a video conference call, I could’ve uploaded the documents. This was backwards, and will cost me several days in bed recovering because I had to walk into the office, sit and stand and argue and cry.

    This is long because I’m using the microphone on my phone as my hands are inflamed with arthritis. I am a mess which is why I received disability in the first place. Social Security dragged me out in this heat with my adult daughter while leaving her 3 month old with my 16 yo to provide a birth certificate and court order.

    What a joke.

    • Ps at the end the FO worker spelled the name wrong and I had to have him correct it. And the guard told us we couldn’t take photos. And why did they need to feel the seal on court order. Because I was going to fake that?

  19. I’m sorry but all of the info about it being easy to sign up for retirement online being easy is a bunch of bull! I can’t even get past filling out the sign-up information for the “My Social Security” account! I have checked and double checked the info I typed into the spaces and it IS all correct. (even though I am told it is not) I have lived at the same house for over 35 years so, this is very frustrating for me. This is making me dread the process of actually signing up for retirement online-which I’d much rather do than sit on the phone all day being transferred around from one person to another. Why does applying for any kind of benefits with the government always seem so hard? It took my husband and I a week last year to get me signed-up for Medicaid-which is nuts!

If you are receiving Supplemental Security Income, you must report the new address to your local Social Security office.   21. After learning of the Equifax breach I tried to open a My Social Security account so I could monitor activity. I am not yet old enough to receive benefits. I was twice (and I gather permanently) locked out after I correctly answered “None of the above” to a total of ten questions. Not one of the items referred to in the questions had any relevance to me. They concerned mortgages, car loans, credit cards, addresses that had nothing to do with me ever in my life. I discovered that MANY people have had the same problem with these questions—they are bogus. I now must go to an office in person. Would you please tell me what documents will be required?       • Thank you, Ray. It seems I am now required to go in person. I was also told I could not make an appointment but could only be a walk-in. I checked my Equifax profile from which these questions were supposedly drawn. There is nothing in the report (or those of the other two credit reporting agencies) remotely related to these questions and my answers were therefore correct. I urge SS to look into this widespread problem of bad security questions erroneously locking people out. Thank you.

  23. I have tried to create a My Social Security account, but due to SSA reliance on Verifying via Experian I am unable to create an account Online, I contacted the help
    desk which was useless since they could only tell me to visit a SSA office. My problem is I am living Thailand and the American embassy here does not have a Social security office. SSA Online site should have more than
    just one means to verify an individual since Credit bureaus are the ones getting hacked.

  25. What is the average timeframe to receive auxiliary benefits for a child on my SSDI. Application filed 67 days ago and all my paperwork states would be done processing within 60 days, but normally only takes a few weeks. We haven’t gotten any calls stating more info needed

  26. I applied online for social security benefits. I received an automated response to call 1-877-772-3794. When you call this number, it gives you a menu that leads to an automated response of “the line is busy, call later” I called 148 times. What do I do next. If I never get through to anyone, I will not get my benefits.
    I am crying and screaming at the same time.

  30. Again, why can’t you respond to my numerous request over the past 3 + months to update my account and be interviewed for benefits? I am a 63-year-old DAV permanently disabled by the Federal Government through OPM effective March 2009. I demand a reply ASAP! I am currently on s.s. i had a work comp case pending, on Dec. 1st it stopped, my attorney filed a letter with s.s. on jan 22nd that this had stopped, we have waited and called several times to see why i havnt been raised to my full benifit amount when calling i first was told it takes 30 days,well that passed ,second call i was told they dont have a letter, so i called wichita ks, office they said the letter is on line for the s.s. worker in Kansas city to see,i need to see what is going on im behind on all bills and rent, they say they dont know where the letter is or who would have it. please help, without being able to speak with someone who handles my case im at a dead end.

  35. I just need to drop off forms for Medicare B, have them looked at to assure they are filled out correctly. We got the first ones back in the mail. We are not sure what exactly was wrong. Do we need on appointment at the office in Newport News, Virginia?

Previously due to an injury, soc services Prince William County Virginia informed me – at 69 yrs old – Virginia would pay for my part B – now I have come off of Medicaid per that same county office but I cannot get confirmation my Part B is now coming out of my SSA monthly. Online statements do not give me the documentation I require. Previously by phone to SS, I was told; yes your Medicare Part B is now coming out of your SSA monthly – but I am seeking treatment and need documentation to that effect – please help.

  41. I need to make an appointment with a human being at my local office at 5195 Coconut Creek Parkway, in Margate, Florida. I am hearing impaired and can’t do business on the phone and my internet is not consistent at home. I need to talk to a person!   43. If I sign up to receive social benefits in june 2018, when will I get my first check. If there is a few months before I get first check, do I get the retro pay from the time of sign up?

    • Hello Ben. The time it takes to process your claim can vary. We attempt to resolve all claims promptly, but there may be delays due to the volume of pending cases in your area.
      Remember that benefits are paid the month after they are due. So, for instance, if you want your benefits to begin with the month of June, your first benefit payment is made in July. You have “protective filing” from the time you applied for benefits, beginning with the month in which you meet all eligibility requirements.
      We care about our customers and our representatives are working as fast as they can to resolve all inquiries, process new claims, and reduce backlogs.
      You can check the status of your application using your my Social Security account.
