Earlier this week, The White House issued national guidance regarding Opening Up America Again. We are evaluating this information as it relates to our agency and are continuing to closely monitor the COVID-19 situation across the nation. In fulfilling Social Security’s mission, when we reopen offices to the public, we will provide a safe environment for both the people we serve and our employees.

As we continue to develop our plans, our offices will remain closed to the public for face-to-face service, and our employees will continue to work remotely and provide services to the public. We will provide updates moving forward and post updated information on the status of our offices, by state, at our website. Our agency will provide these updates directly, and please disregard other sources of information regarding the status of our offices.

We will continue to provide the vital service the public relies on. Please visit our website for more information about our services during the pandemic.

My daughter was raped and beaten by the father of her children. He took all their belongings including their Social security numbers she does not know. We have spent hundreds of dollars on getting documents and over a year, and she can not get their Social Security numbers. She can not file taxes, get benefits. She can not do anything. She has nothing! This government is useless. They need to be disbanded.

Please open up the ssn offices in MA, I need to get an SSN and I can’t mail documents because I’m not an international. I’ve called my local offices for help several times and they’ve been rude and unhelpful. You guys really need to do better. It’s causing a lot of stress and anxiety in an already tough and confusing situation.

    • V.V.

Hi Anisha, thanks for using our blog. We apologize for the difficulties you are experiencing in working with Social Security. Please check out our Social Security and Coronavirus web page for details on how you can get help from Social Security.

My husband & I were married in March, when we went to local SSA to get my name changed, we were turned away. We do not have a computer, libraries are not available to use their computers. How am I to be able to change my social security card, drivers’s license, bank accounts, etc.

    • V.V.

Hi Sonya, thank you for using our blog. Check out our Frequently Asked Questions web page on how to change your name. If you do not want to mail in your documents, which will be returned, you may need to wait for the offices to reopen. Use our Social Security Office Locator to find your local office address. We hope this helps.

I have forgotten my social security number. How can I get someone at social security to give it to me? I can’t set up an account with social security without my number. I need a replacement card.

    • V.V.

Hi Lita, thank you for your question. First, realize you may not need a replacement card. You will rarely need to show it. Knowing your Social Security number is what is important. However, if you must get a replacement card, you may be able to apply online. Check out our Frequently Asked Questions web page for details on how to apply for a replacement Social Security card. If you are unable to apply online and you do not want to mail in your documents, which will be returned, you may need to wait for the offices to reopen. You can also call your local office and see if they will mail you an SSN printout instead of a replacement Social Security card. We are unable to process replacement Social Security card requests by phone at this time. Use our Social Security Office Locator to find your local office address. We hope this helps.

This has been very upsetting and frustrating. I requested a ss# and card be issued for my son as part of his immigration process. Your website advises if this is the case it should arrive within three weeks of his arrival. This sadly did not happen. I called and was directed to a field office where the first person I spoke with was rude, offered no solution and finally hung up on me. The second rep while friendly advised he could not show that a card was ever processed for my son so now we would need an in person appointment but that those are not available at this time. He said we should call back next month and ask again. I am a parent trying to get my child enrolled in high school and get him medical insurance both of these tasks require a social security number which was somehow missed by someone when he was admitted to the US and now requires an appointment you do not offer. Let me say being told by your first rep that this is not his concern or problem was horrible. There should be some type of emergency appointment process for a 17 year old child who was legally admitted to the US to get a social security number to allow enrollment in high school and be enrolled in benefits.
