Earlier this week, The White House issued national guidance regarding Opening Up America Again. We are evaluating this information as it relates to our agency and are continuing to closely monitor the COVID-19 situation across the nation. In fulfilling Social Security’s mission, when we reopen offices to the public, we will provide a safe environment for both the people we serve and our employees.

As we continue to develop our plans, our offices will remain closed to the public for face-to-face service, and our employees will continue to work remotely and provide services to the public. We will provide updates moving forward and post updated information on the status of our offices, by state, at our website. Our agency will provide these updates directly, and please disregard other sources of information regarding the status of our offices.

We will continue to provide the vital service the public relies on. Please visit our website for more information about our services during the pandemic.

Reading your replies has been helpful. I got remarried in Early May and I’ve been trying to update my name on my account since then. I sent documentation in that I was told by an official SSA person would work (birth certificate, marriage license, current SS card, and a voided driver’s license which had an expiration date of 5 years out). Of course I couldn’t send in my current newly updated license with my new name because I needed it every day. I sent everything into my local SS office and a month later I got the supporting documents mailed back to my OLD address. Even though I had put my new address on the form and had also updated it on-line. I only got these supporting documents back because the people who lived at my old address called me to come pick them up — or I wouldn’t have even gotten them back. I waited another month and called the local SS office and asked about the status. The person said yes in was in process and should be done in 2 weeks and I’d get my new card in the mail. Another month went by and I called the office again. She looked up my account and said the case had been closed becomes the voided DL didn’t pass muster, even though someone else from the SSA had assured me it would. The worst thing is that I was never notified in any way that they closed the case. Even the agent acknowledged that probably wasn’t the best way to handle it. I wrote them a kind letter (we all need more kindness these days) and said that didn’t seem right to me and I was just trying to do the right thing. Even the Department of Motor Vehicles opened their offices on an appointment basis months ago and that’s how I got my DL updated. Seems to me that the SSA could do that. I will give the local office a tiny bit of credit. They just mailed me the form to fill out and start the whole process over again. Sigh.
Well after reading some of your replies to people I’ve just decided to pretty much give up. I was trying to do the right thing but it will have to wait for a long time. I also applied to update my passport 3 months ago and if I would ever get that back I could use that as a supporting document. But I will not be mailing supporting documents in again because I’m not sure I would get them back. Anyway thanks for your replies which have been helpful. God bless.

Hi Stanley, thank you for using our blog. First, realize you may not need a replacement card. You will rarely need to show it. Knowing your Social Security number is what is important. However, if you must get a replacement card, you may be able to apply online. Visit our Social Security Number and Card page to learn how. If you cannot request a replacement card online, call your local office and request that we mail you an SSN printout instead of a replacement Social Security card. Unfortunately, we are unable to process replacement Social Security card requests by phone at this time.

Everyone else is open. Even schools are looking at it. I have a problem with an overpayment from SSI. I get different answers from the Xenia Ohio and the 1-800 no. about what is going on. The overpayment is related to a severance I received. They lost the papers they stamped at Xenia the papers that the employer fills out called special payments, I filled an appeal 3 days after my notice and resubmitted everything. They already are taking money out of my account and the regs say if you provide notice within 3 days that should not happen. I am going to notify Dewine’s office next if I don’t get a call.

Hi Peggy. We apologize for the difficult time you are experiencing working with Social Security. We have referred your complaint to our Office of Operations to follow up and to take corrective action as necessary.

I called in the local offices a lot of time here in Florida but they always say to wait for the office to open. I am always telling them that I read thru your website that I can set up an appointment for a face to face interview for me to get the SSN but they are telling me that that it is not possible.

    Help

I help refugees who are legally eligible to receive a SS#.
However , first time applicants are required to show their documents in person at a SS office which are all closed!

Therefore, we have people who want to work but survive on welfare because there are no provisions to get these legal refugees a SS#.

Can’t you figure out a way to accept electronic documents , perhaps with county social service documents that prove that the county government people have personally seen the documents…..?

    • Vonda V.

Hi Carol, thanks for using our blog. We continue to process Social Security Numbers and issue cards for certain lawful immigrants, we call these processes Enumeration at Entry (EAE) and Enumeration beyond Entry(EBE).

If these automated processes are not available, we will schedule an in-office appointment for a new card request for those with a critical need. Appointment availability is based on available staff and office operating status. Please call your local office to see if an in-office appointment is necessary and possible. To contact your local office, please look for the local office telephone number at Social Security Office Locator under “Social Security Office Information” for the office you select. The toll-free “Office” number is your local office.
