Social Security Applauds Passage of Legislation Providing Historic Tax Relief for Seniors
Reading Time: 1 MinuteLast Updated: July 7, 2025
The Social Security Administration (SSA) is celebrating the passage of the One Big, Beautiful Bill, a landmark piece of legislation that delivers long-awaited tax relief to millions of older Americans.
The bill ensures that nearly 90% of Social Security beneficiaries will no longer pay federal income taxes on their benefits, providing meaningful and immediate relief to seniors who have spent a lifetime contributing to our nation’s economy.
“This is a historic step forward for America’s seniors,” said Social Security Commissioner Frank Bisignano. “For nearly 90 years, Social Security has been a cornerstone of economic security for older Americans. By significantly reducing the tax burden on benefits, this legislation reaffirms President Trump’s promise to protect Social Security and helps ensure that seniors can better enjoy the retirement they’ve earned.”
The new law includes a provision that eliminates federal income taxes on Social Security benefits for most beneficiaries, providing relief to individuals and couples. It does so by providing an enhanced deduction for taxpayers aged 65 and older, ensuring that retirees can keep more of what they earned.
Social Security remains committed to providing timely, accurate information to the public and will continue working closely with federal partners to ensure beneficiaries understand how this legislation may affect them.

So basically if don’t pay taxes on your social security … there’s nothing in it for you, again the poor got the shaft

Why is this still up:
“The bill ensures that nearly 90% of Social Security beneficiaries will no longer pay federal income taxes on their benefits”
We’ve been told by news agencies that this is not true.
I’ve just arranged the sale of stock so I’ll fall under the 0% capital gains rate. But since this isn’t apparently the truth, I’m now going to be taxed on most of my Social Security income.

When does no tax on social security goes into effect?

Hey, It was amazing to go through your post, that was really so useful and informative!

People who have worked and paid into Social Security for the the required years should receive benefits when they reach the required age or become disabled. This is money people who have worked and paid into Social Security, short of having a gun put to their head. And then once you begin to you realize this income you thought you’re getting is still the government’s, namely master Social Security. A large majority of the hard working in this country are not wealthy, they don’t have millions or billions buried in their backyard. And for people who work hard for the majority of their lives to have this benefit dangled in front of them like a carrot on a stick, is shameful. Especially people who are disabled, that’s a stab in the gut. The government and the political system needs to be rebuilt from the ground up. And then these DEDUCTIONS TERMINATE in 2028!! I guess hard working people in this country will be terminated or discontinued by 2028! We live in a time where smoke and shiny objects no longer work anymore! We will keep fighting to get these outrageous social security taxation laws overturned. Millionaires and Billionaires have tax breaks called (loopholes), where’s ours?

When does this start?

I own an accounting firm and have read the legislation. This bill does NOT change the taxation of Social Security. I would like to know how you are legally allowed to print bold-faced lies as political propaganda, when you represent the taxpayers.

Thank you for bringing this to our attention.

I agree…. Telling retirees no tax on their SS income when the bill is actually giving them a small deduction which is temporary?
Learned a new word today…
Trumpery … it is when something is made to look good but it is actually worthless! Synonym would be a con!

I have the same question. The deduction has nothing to do with taxation of Social Security benefits. I am shocked that the SSA is blatantly lying in an official document.

Thank you

I agree with Gregory everything I read SOCIAL SECURITY stays the same. The bill that Trump signed does not change anything with retirement and SOCIAL SECURITY at this time.

You should reread the Law (since has been passed and signed) again. This time read it with nonpartisan eyes. While I don’t agree with much of the Law, it does give Tax Relief to most (90%) of Seniors.
There are none so blind, as those that will not see.

You are so correct.
