Update on Social Security Offices
Reading Time: 1 MinuteLast Updated: February 21, 2023
Earlier this week, The White House issued national guidance regarding Opening Up America Again. We are evaluating this information as it relates to our agency and are continuing to closely monitor the COVID-19 situation across the nation. In fulfilling Social Security’s mission, when we reopen offices to the public, we will provide a safe environment for both the people we serve and our employees.
As we continue to develop our plans, our offices will remain closed to the public for face-to-face service, and our employees will continue to work remotely and provide services to the public. We will provide updates moving forward and post updated information on the status of our offices, by state, at our website. Our agency will provide these updates directly, and please disregard other sources of information regarding the status of our offices.
We will continue to provide the vital service the public relies on. Please visit our website for more information about our services during the pandemic.

Hi, EO. Thanks for your comment. Please call your local office to see if an in-office appointment is necessary and possible. To find your local office information, visit here. Look for the general inquiry telephone number under Show Additional Office Information. We hope this helps.

I need a Social Security replacement card as I shredded mine by mistake with some other papers. I need to get a California ID as I will be flying in October card for that. and you have to have a Calif. ID & you need to show them a SS card or a copy of your card. I need the office’s to be opened.

Hi Jann, thank you for your question. First, realize you may not need a replacement card. You will rarely need to show it. Knowing your Social Security number is what is important. However, if you must get a replacement card, you may be able to apply online. Check out our Frequently Asked Questions web page for details on how to apply for a replacement Social Security card. If you are unable to apply online and you do not want to mail in your documents, which will be returned, you may need to wait for the offices to reopen. You can also call your local office and see if they will mail you an SSN printout instead of a replacement Social Security card. We are unable to process replacement Social Security card requests by phone at this time. Use our Social Security Office Locator to find your local office address. We hope this helps.

Here it is past mid-June 2020. I need to replace my SSA card in order to get my drivers license in Nevada since we recently moved here from Texas. No other paperwork is accepted except certified copies. I tried to get a replacement card via mail with a color photo copy of my passport. That was denied because it was not a certified copy. I found my birth certificate with a state seal, but its the only one i have. I am not mailing the only one i have with no guarantee that it will be returned to me. My time of residency here to obtain my drivers license and to get my vehicles registered here is quickly running out. Your offices have no opening date. I live 40 miles from the nearest office, which is in St George, Utah. Las Vegas is an hour away. Its not like i can just drive down the street to my local office.
What do you propose that i do?

Hello,
I need to apply for SSN number and card for first time.
Its been 3 months since I came to US and I’m stuck without SSN.
Before the offices were closed I went to the office and I was told I will receive the SSN in 2 weeks than the offices closed due to COVID,
How can I apply for my SSN, there is no option for me to apply online.
Thank You
Truc
Open the SSA office Mr Commissioner Andrew Saul…
There is no reason the Social Security Offices should still be closed as everything else is opening, there is people that need to do bussiness with the Social Security Office and doing it online and having to send documents in by mail, and the mail was return and tell us to wait until it is to be reopen, it is a joke.
open the offices like all other businesses have done, there is no reason this office needs to remain closed.

Very poor services, mail in the application for SSN card, as online instruction was given; and the mail was return Back to us, and tell us to wait until the office is to be reopen; so the SSA office is close to the public, and no service for the public. Online services is limited. So please do not say, it is more effective with online MR. Commissioner Andrew Paul…

I can’t get my replacement social security card online because I am a minor and my mother has to prove with her ID in person that she is my parent. Is the Social Security Office taking appointments? We have already tried to get it online, but it doesn’t work.

Please stop saing that documents can be mailed into SS. Documents to obtain a new SSN are needed for evryday life and would be devastating if lost. I renewed my passport (I know an othe government agency) on March 3rd and I still do not have the new passport. So…..mailing in personal documents to SS is a ridulous request when there is not rason why you cannot deploy the CDC precautions and open for F2F appointments.

I need to apply for Social Security as I am 65 years old.
My case number officer requests that I send in my birth certificate by mail. But my birth certificate is practically irreplaceable if lost and I just daren’t risk sending it in by US mail. Why can’t a notary signature be sufficient in these Covid19 mandatory closures of essential services?
V.V.
Thanks for using our blog, Mark. If you haven’t yet filed for Social Security retirement benefits, you can apply four months before you want your payments to start. The easiest and most convenient way to apply is by using our online retirement application. If you already filed for benefits and have questions about required documentation, please call your local office for assistance. Look for the general inquiry telephone number at the Social Security Office Locator. The number may appear under Show Additional Office Information. Please be aware that our call wait times are longer than normal. We hope this information helps.
