Earlier this week, The White House issued national guidance regarding Opening Up America Again. We are evaluating this information as it relates to our agency and are continuing to closely monitor the COVID-19 situation across the nation. In fulfilling Social Security’s mission, when we reopen offices to the public, we will provide a safe environment for both the people we serve and our employees.

As we continue to develop our plans, our offices will remain closed to the public for face-to-face service, and our employees will continue to work remotely and provide services to the public. We will provide updates moving forward and post updated information on the status of our offices, by state, at our website. Our agency will provide these updates directly, and please disregard other sources of information regarding the status of our offices.

We will continue to provide the vital service the public relies on. Please visit our website for more information about our services during the pandemic.

Dear Sir, Madam, or automated robot,

When will the SSA publish beneficial information about reopening? It has been too long with the same copy & paste message. Please provide us with some sort of transparency. We desperately need in-person assistance or a change to the policy to support our new normal.

I am an ER nurse whose social was stolen. I am a permanent resident so I need to show my green card in person. Your agents are requesting I mail it. Your agents do not realize during COVID I can’t obtain replacement if it gets lost in the mail. US immigration is no longer processing any replacement green cards. Even without COVID the process to replace a missing. Cards is 18 months. My phone is 6614319288 Marika Schlindwein

Hi Marika, thanks for using our blog. First, realize you may not need a replacement card. You will rarely need to show it. Knowing your Social Security number is what is important. However, if you must get a replacement card, you may be able to apply online. Check out our Frequently Asked Questions web page for details on how to apply for a replacement Social Security card. If you cannot request a replacement card online, call your local office to see if they can mail you an SSN printout instead of a replacement Social Security card. We are unable to process replacement Social Security card requests by phone at this time.

How am I to get a social security card for my minor child if offices are not open? It is my understanding that original documents are required including my driver’s license, so if I sent them by mail I would not be able to drive. Your help is appreciated.

I have been waiting for Social Security Offices to re-open for In-person visits to apply for new SSN#. I am on non-immigrant work visa and my employer need to complete my work authorization with DHS ASAP and it is very critical and most urgent. My employer is ready to provide me the letter declaring the same. I tried to explain my situation and challenges multiple times to officers in Indianapolis on phone but i had very unpleasant experience with their response. I have sent emails too but there have been no responses. I can’t send my passport in physical mail as being foreigner i can’t afford to loose my passport and i am not sure about the time it takes to process as i was told by one of the officer to consider min 8 weeks. It is very strange that parks, bars & restaurants, Malls, zoo etc. opening up which are non-essential services while Social Security being essential services remains closed till further notice. I hope you understand that without SSN, person can not have Bank, Credit Card, Medical, Apply for Car & House etc which are basic needs of human to live.
I request you to start the Online Application for new SSN# with option to upload scanned documents for proofs to validate and assign the token to schedule the appointment for verifying the originals across the counter just like VISA Consulate to limit the office getting crowded.

I think it’s a good idea for social security offices to remain closed for person-to-person contact at this time. However, there needs to be some procedure for an individual with a green card and passport who is entitled to apply for Medicare or Social Security to have those items verified. My husband is eligible for Medicare, and has been told to mail in his passport and green card to be verified. He cannot run the risk of having these necessary items become lost in the mail. He was told he’d have to wait for thur offices to reopen. However, when will that be, and this could possibly delay his much needed benefits. Some sort of remedy should be in place to remedy this problem!

So only green card holders need to have a procedure ????

When are you going to re-open? Seriously?? We cant create an profile online because Equifax has our mailing and street address messed up, and middle inital vs. full name. How many hoops do we have to jump through?

This is so frustrating because our UI payments are on hold until we can get a copy of our social security card.
    PLEASE RE OPEN.

I have a problem of my ssn. I’m a new immigrant and I submitted already my application and requirements last May 6, here in Pensacola Social Security office. I’ve been waiting for more than 1 month now but still I do not receive my ssn. So what I did I called the office and they said I have to come to the office face to face. I have to wait the social security to reopen. The problem is when will be the reopening? We cannot file taxes with my husband because they need my ssn, also I cannot open an account to the bank because I don’t have social security no. We have a lot of things to do but we cannot do something because I don’t have ssn.
