Earlier this week, The White House issued national guidance regarding Opening Up America Again. We are evaluating this information as it relates to our agency and are continuing to closely monitor the COVID-19 situation across the nation. In fulfilling Social Security’s mission, when we reopen offices to the public, we will provide a safe environment for both the people we serve and our employees.

As we continue to develop our plans, our offices will remain closed to the public for face-to-face service, and our employees will continue to work remotely and provide services to the public. We will provide updates moving forward and post updated information on the status of our offices, by state, at our website. Our agency will provide these updates directly, and please disregard other sources of information regarding the status of our offices.

We will continue to provide the vital service the public relies on. Please visit our website for more information about our services during the pandemic.

    Dear SS Officers,

I arrived to USA 15 days ago with my L1 Visa and I need to apply for a SSN as soon as possible. Unfortunately there is no remote solution because you need to validate my documentation and I can not send my passport or visa via mailing.

Could you please let me know if you have a solution to my case? I really need my SSN for my salary, my healthcare plan and other important things.

Thank you in advance! I appreciate your help!

    Regards,
    Gonzalo

Hi Gonzalo, thanks for using our blog. We continue to process Social Security Numbers and issue cards for certain lawful immigrants, we call these processes Enumeration at Entry (EAE) and Enumeration beyond Entry(EBE).

If these automated processes are not available to you, we may be able to offer an in-office appointment for a new card request based on available staff and office operating status. Please call your local office to see if an in-office appointment is necessary and possible. To contact your local office, please look for the local office telephone number at the Social Security Office Locator under “Social Security Office Information” for the office you select. The toll-free “Office” number is your local office.

The Enumeration at Entry (EAE) and Enumeration beyond Entry(EBE) process iOS nonexistent. The SSA still requires an in-person meeting in order to begin the enumeration process. We supposedly should’ve gone through this process. We spent months on the phone with both DHS and SSA. Neither party was willing to contact the other for our case, and the DHS was even more hesitant at “sending our application” to the SSA for enumeration.

Please let us know which offices are willing to “offer an in-office appointment for a new card request based on available staff and office operating status” because supposedly all offices are closed. This option seems to only be offered to individuals with friends in high places.

        Please open for appointments!!

I’m an immigrant and got my work permit on February, I went to a Social Security office at same month and after a while they informed my social security number application was canceled and I needed to return to the office but then they close and I couldn’t apply again, I need a solution bc I need this to start to work.

My son is a new immigrant and need his SS number for school purposes. USCIS should have requested your office to issue him a number but we don’t know what happen. Your office is still close for in person service so he can just apply. When do you plan to open????

What day are you open up your social security office I need to get a social security card

  6. James A.

I have sent one email and not got a answer. So once again when is social security offices going to open back up. My wife has her green card and needs social security number in order to be able to do things. Why is it this the only thing you need a face to face meeting and all other things can be done online.

  7. Nancy M.

Why is your office still closed? Can’t you figure out how to clean an office? Why do you still get a paycheck if essential services are not given to the taxpayers paying your salary… where is the update promised?

  8. Rose C.

When will the offices open up? I was to receive my Social Security with a small back pay. But I was told I can’t get the back pay until the offices are open I visit there in person, face to face. This makes a extreme hardship on people.

Many of us need an SSN for someone so we can finish filing our 2019 Federal Income Tax return. And we can only do that at an office. I would like to see the offices open up for these types of transactions or for us to be able to use an online process instead. Thank you.

    • Vonda V.

Hi Stephen, thank you for your question. First, realize you may not need a replacement card. You will rarely need to show it. Knowing your Social Security number is what is important. However, if you must get a replacement card, you may be able to apply online. Check out our Frequently Asked Questions web page for details on how to apply for a replacement Social Security card. If you are unable to apply online and you do not want to mail in your documents, which will be returned, you may need to wait for the offices to reopen. You can also call your local office and see if they will mail you an SSN printout instead of a replacement Social Security card. We are unable to process replacement Social Security card requests by phone at this time. Use our Social Security Office Locator to find your local office address. We hope this helps.
