Earlier this week, The White House issued national guidance regarding Opening Up America Again. We are evaluating this information as it relates to our agency and are continuing to closely monitor the COVID-19 situation across the nation. In fulfilling Social Security’s mission, when we reopen offices to the public, we will provide a safe environment for both the people we serve and our employees.

As we continue to develop our plans, our offices will remain closed to the public for face-to-face service, and our employees will continue to work remotely and provide services to the public. We will provide updates moving forward and post updated information on the status of our offices, by state, at our website. Our agency will provide these updates directly, and please disregard other sources of information regarding the status of our offices.

We will continue to provide the vital service the public relies on. Please visit our website for more information about our services during the pandemic.

“If these automated processes are not available to you, we may be able to offer an in-office appointment for a new card request based on available staff and office operating status. Please call your local office to see if an in-office appointment is necessary and possible.”

This bogus, BS statement is nothing but a bunch of misleading information. There is no local SSA office that is scheduling in-office appointments! If there are any such offices, why don’t you publish them on your web site? You are giving people false hope, knowing very well that you are sending people on a wild goose chase and the result will be nil. I live in the zip code 34203. If you find a SSA office within 100 miles from my zip code that schedules face-to-face meetings, please e-mail me their contact information and I will call them!

I agree. I have called SS offices in Jacksonvile Florida, St August, Orlando, Tampa and then started up I-95 into GA to no avail. NO SS LOCAL OFFICE IS OPEN FOR F2f appointments.

Do we know when the offices in Texas will reopen? During my divorce, my child’s social security card was lost. He wants to take his driving test to get his permit but cannot without social security card. I cannot mail in my driver’s license and go without that for however long it takes to prove he is who he is and to get his replacement. When will they reopen????????

    • Vonda V.

Hi Pamela, thank you for your question. If you do not want to mail in required documentation, which will be returned, you may need to wait for the offices to reopen. You can also call your local office and see if they will mail you an SSN printout instead of a replacement Social Security card. We are unable to process replacement Social Security card requests by phone at this time. Use our Social Security Office Locator to find your local office address. We hope this helps.

when are the offices going to reopen. I need to have a face to face appointment to get my SS card. I was recently issued my work permit from immigration that was issued using copies of original documents but to apply for an SS number I need to show the original work permit to a representative to issue my SS card. why are copies ok for immigration but not ok for the social security office? why are offices still remaining closed when every other business is reopening ?

    • Vonda V.

Hi Andy, thanks for using our blog. We continue to process Social Security Numbers and issue cards for certain lawful immigrants, we call these processes Enumeration at Entry (EAE) and Enumeration beyond Entry(EBE).

If these automated processes are not available to you, we may be able to offer an in-office appointment for a new card request based on available staff and office operating status. Please call your local office to see if an in-office appointment is necessary and possible. To contact your local office, please look for the local office telephone number at the Social Security Office Locator under “Social Security Office Information” for the office you select. The toll-free “Office” number is your local office.

The Jacksonville Florida local office will not scheulde a F2F appointment unless you have a pending job orffer with a letter. This does no apply to my permanent resident card holding wife who needs a SSN. We have been devastated financially byt the pandemic and by not having the SSN, we will have to pay a much greater amount in income taxes. I have submitted my response in a earlier message thats more complete.

Offices need to reopen like the rest of society! Put measures into place to keep everyone safe, but you need to get on with business! Yes you have the option of doing things through the mail, but how am I supposed to continue on normally if I have to mail in my driver’s license and not know when I’m getting it back? I have to drive to work every day!

    • Vonda V.

Hi Lauren, thank you for your comments. If you are unable to apply online and you do not want to mail in your documents, which will be returned, you may need to wait for the offices to reopen. You can also call your local office and see if they will mail you an SSN printout instead of a replacement Social Security card. We are unable to process replacement Social Security card requests by phone at this time. Use our Social Security Office Locator to find your local office address. We hope this helps.

You need to re-open and accept appointments only. People has business that they need to take care of.

  7. Maria

I need to apply for a new social security card. I can not apply for a job until you open your office. I have already waited almost a year for my permanent residency.

  8. Jerry L.

How do I SET UP AN APPOINTMENT AT MY LOCAL OFFICE? I NEED TO HAVE MEDICARE and S.S. explained to me. I am not a computer geek. Thank You Very Much!!

    • Vonda V.

Hi Jerry, thanks for using our blog. You can call us at 1-800-772-1213 for assistance or you can contact your local Social Security office. Please look for the general inquiry telephone number at the Social Security Office Locator. The number may appear under Show Additional Office Information. Please be aware that our call wait times are longer than normal. We hope this information helps.

Why does it take so long to “evaluate information” and provide some sort of update?
WHEN WILL OFFICES START TO OPEN?

  10. CO

Please re-open the offices, I need to apply for a Social Security Number for the first time. I have an immigrant visa an I am not able to apply for a job because I do no have the SSN.
My local office (Hackensack, NJ) is not offering a solution to this problem, when I call they respond like they do not care.
Can someone be conscious that we need the SSN to apply for a job. Nowdays, job applications are online. I need to work to pay for my bills. I have 2 children with me and it is not easy to get a job without the SSN.
