Supplemental Security Income Recipients Will Receive Automatic COVID-19 Economic Impact Payments
Reading Time: 2 MinutesLast Updated: February 21, 2023
The Treasury Department announced that Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients will receive automatic Economic Impact Payments directly from the Treasury Department. Treasury anticipates these automatic payments to go out no later than early May.
SSI recipients with no qualifying children do not need to take any action in order to receive their $1,200 economic impact payment. The payments will be automatic.
SSI recipients who have qualifying children under age 17, however, should not wait for their automatic $1,200 individual payment. They should now go to the IRS’s webpage and visit the Non-Filers: Enter Your Payment Info section to provide their information. By taking proactive steps to enter information on the IRS website about them and their qualifying children, they will also receive the $500 per dependent child payment in addition to their $1,200 individual payment. If SSI beneficiaries in this group do not provide their information to the IRS soon, they will have to wait until later to receive their $500 per qualifying child.
This is great news for SSI recipients, and I want to remind recipients with qualifying children to go to IRS.gov soon so that you will receive the full amount of the Economic Impact Payments you and your family are eligible for. I also want to thank the dedicated employees of the Treasury Department, Social Security, and the Internal Revenue Service for making this happen and working non-stop on this issue.
SSI Recipients with Dependent Children Should Still Go To IRS.gov to Provide Their Information
Social Security retirement, survivors, and disability insurance beneficiaries (who don’t normally file taxes) will also qualify for automatic payments of $1,200 from Treasury. These payments are anticipated to start arriving around the end of April.
The Treasury Department, not Social Security, will make these automatic payments to beneficiaries. Recipients will generally receive the automatic payments by direct deposit, Direct Express debit card, or by paper check, just as they would normally receive their SSI or Social Security benefits.
For those SSI and Social Security retirement, survivors, and disability insurance beneficiaries, with dependent children, who use Direct Express debit cards, additional information will be available soon regarding the steps to take when claiming children under 17, on the IRS website.
Please note that the agency will not consider Economic Impact Payments as income for SSI recipients, and the payments are excluded from resources for 12 months.
For more information about Social Security retirement, survivors, and disability insurance beneficiaries, please see our most recent blog.
The eligibility requirements and other information about the Economic Impact Payments can be found on the IRS website. In addition, please continue to visit the IRS for the latest information.

So I’ll be getting the check around my regular SSI checks I usually get them on 1st and 3rd of the month ?
Chris L.
Social security ssdi the by the end of April ssi the begining of May if you get a check on the third you get a ssa- 1099 it comes every January because you worked in the past so more than likely you will get yours by the end of April could be sooner on the IRS.gov website get my payment it says social security ssdi ssi they are not doing that info right now. It gets me why we are always last to get anything. Why are we social security ssdi ssi we are the ones most vunurable we get everything that’s good last before everyone else.
Michelle
Because you do not file taxes and the Treasury Dept has to get SSA’s database of payees, weed out those who were claimed as dependents, and input your direct deposit information in the U S Treasury payment system before they can issue payment. Taxpayers who received direct deposit of a refund were the easiest, therefore they are the first one getting the money. Taxpayers who owed had no direct deposit information in the system and they are not getting paid yet either. There is a limit to what can be processed in such a short time. They are not doing it because you are less important, only because it is a more complex procedure that takes more time to make the arrangements.

Hi Jackie, thank you for your question. Treasury expects automatic payments for Social Security beneficiaries no later than the end of April and automatic payments for SSI recipients no later than early May. Please continue to visit the IRS Economic Impact Payments web page for additional information.

I would like to know when we’re getting it to because I am getting further behind my bills and I’m about to have my power shut off because of it and I can’t figure out for sure when I’m exactly going to get my stimulus check

Hi Matthew, thank you for using our blog to ask your question. Treasury, not Social Security, will be making automatic Economic Income Payments to eligible people. Unfortunately, we do not have information about the exact schedule for these payments. Treasury anticipates these payments to go out to Social Security retirement, survivors, and disability insurance beneficiaries starting around the end of April and to Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients starting in early May. Continue to check the irs.gov/coronavirus page for updates.

My husband gets SSI I know he will get 1200 but will I get 1200 to for being his spouse?
Chris l.
You both altogether will get 2400 dollars.
Michelle
If the only income you have as a married couple is his SSI, then you probably didn’t file a tax return in 2018 or 2019. If that is true, you will only get your $1200 if you use the non-filers portal and input your information. Do not enter his information there, they already have his. Also don’t expect to receive one payment of $2400 – each of you will get a separate payment based on your category. Do yours asap and you will be able to get direct deposit of yours. If you filed taxes in 2018 or 2019 and got a refund via direct deposit, do nothing. If you owed taxes or asked for a paper check, use the Get My Payment portal to input your direct deposit information.

Hi Justin, thank you for using our blog. Treasury, not Social Security, will make these payments. We do not have information about the schedule for these payments. The IRS will provide additional information at http://www.irs.gov/coronavirus.

What happens now to those who are on SSI that filed the non-filers prior to this who do not have children to claim because multiple websites and news sites said all SSI recipients had to file then now all of a sudden this change of course and there is no option to cancel the filing. And obviously some did file.

My question is: If a person files taxes but doesn’t have direct deposit AND they get social security or ssi with direct deposit, how or which way will they receive their stimulus check?
V.V.
Hi Steph, thank you for your question. Social Security retirement, survivors, or disability beneficiaries and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients who do not have qualifying children under age 17 do not need to take any action with the IRS. You will automatically receive your $1,200 economic impact payment directly from the IRS. You should receive the automatic payments by direct deposit, Direct Express debit card, or by paper check, just as you would normally receive your Social Security benefits.

When do our check come in on our direct check
Nickie
I get ssi they had told us to go to that non filing thing so does that mean we are going to get it on direct express card

why are the dates for the 1200 stimulus checks always being changed, first date was 4-6, then 4-15 now the end of April or the first week in May? I keep having to call my creditors and changing my agreements with them!!! I am a senior and get SSA, I am so upset with what is going on. plus having health problems. I surely hope we all get our checks sooner then later!
Huh?
Why didn’t you pay your bills if you were still getting SS? Now you have no money to pay for anything?
