Supplemental Security Income Recipients Will Receive Automatic COVID-19 Economic Impact Payments

The Treasury Department announced that Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients will receive automatic Economic Impact Payments directly from the Treasury Department.  Treasury anticipates these automatic payments to go out no later than early May.

SSI recipients with no qualifying children do not need to take any action in order to receive their $1,200 economic impact payment. The payments will be automatic.

SSI recipients who have qualifying children under age 17, however, should not wait for their automatic $1,200 individual payment. They should now go to the IRS’s webpage and visit the Non-Filers: Enter Your Payment Info section to provide their information. By taking proactive steps to enter information on the IRS website about them and their qualifying children, they will also receive the $500 per dependent child payment in addition to their $1,200 individual payment. If SSI beneficiaries in this group do not provide their information to the IRS soon, they will have to wait until later to receive their $500 per qualifying child.

This is great news for SSI recipients, and I want to remind recipients with qualifying children to go to IRS.gov soon so that you will receive the full amount of the Economic Impact Payments you and your family are eligible for. I also want to thank the dedicated employees of the Treasury Department, Social Security, and the Internal Revenue Service for making this happen and working non-stop on this issue.

SSI Recipients with Dependent Children Should Still Go To IRS.gov to Provide Their Information

Social Security retirement, survivors, and disability insurance beneficiaries (who don’t normally file taxes) will also qualify for automatic payments of $1,200 from Treasury. These payments are anticipated to start arriving around the end of April.

The Treasury Department, not Social Security, will make these automatic payments to beneficiaries. Recipients will generally receive the automatic payments by direct deposit, Direct Express debit card, or by paper check, just as they would normally receive their SSI or Social Security benefits.

For those SSI and Social Security retirement, survivors, and disability insurance beneficiaries, with dependent children, who use Direct Express debit cards, additional information will be available soon regarding the steps to take when claiming children under 17, on the IRS website.

Please note that the agency will not consider Economic Impact Payments as income for SSI recipients, and the payments are excluded from resources for 12 months.

For more information about Social Security retirement, survivors, and disability insurance beneficiaries, please see our most recent blog.

The eligibility requirements and other information about the Economic Impact Payments can be found on the IRS website. In addition, please continue to visit the IRS for the latest information.

My wife and I had a joint tax refund direct deposit in 2017, but had to pay IRS in 2018 & 2019 and bank deposit information is not on the tax return. I have received social security direct deposit for years on the 2nd Wednesday. My wife applied last week for social security and the application is now being process. She should receive her social security direct deposit check on 3rd Wednesday of May 2020. How and when will she or both received the Covid-19 check?

    • V.V.

I draw social security disability. I have the direct express card. No qualifying children or spouse. Is there anything i have to do? Im so confused.

    • V.V.

Hi Yvonne, thank you for your question. Social Security retirement, survivors, or disability beneficiaries and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients who do not have qualifying children under age 17 do not need to take any action with the IRS. You will automatically receive your $1,200 economic impact payment directly from the IRS. You should receive the automatic payments by direct deposit, Direct Express debit card, or by paper check, just as you would normally receive your Social Security benefits.

im on ssi and when this first started i didnt know what to do to get a stimulus check and a couple weeks ago my attorney said to file as a non filer so i did, will this make me get a check later than most or will it come soon, had i knew for sure i didnt have to do anything i would not have done the non filer thing

  9. Tony

Could really use an answer please.

I’m on SSDI and get direct deposit on the 15th of each month, my wife is an independent contractor, but currently out of work and we have a 16 and 17 year old that don’t work. We file jointly and include the kids as dependents. Although we got out ’19 taxes done, we have yet to send our payment into the IRS, but will do so later.

Are we to receive the $1200 x 2 and $500 x 2 from SS as well? We’re running out of money and if we are going to receive anything when would that be? I got my usual monthly payment yesterday and this was not included; would it be in next months? Before?

Lastly, do I need to fill anything out for our kids?

    Thanks for any help

      • Tony

Thanks Vonda. So, this SSI/SSDI stimulus is in place of the IRS Economic Impact Payment and in my case I will not get a stimulus payment through SS, correct?

        • V.V.

Hi Tony, It is Treasury, not Social Security, that is making the Economic Impact Payments. Please visit the irs.gov/coronavirus web page for details.

My question is similar. My husband is an SSI recipient (age) and we qualify for $2400 by all of the rules. I only see $1200 mentioned for SSI recipients but how will their spouse’s benefit be paid? The same way and time as the SSI recipient? Or do I need to set up another way for payment? Our bank account where the SSI funds are sent is joint, if that matters. The website doesn’t seem to address my question so I’ll be glad to hear your answer.
        We have filed for 2018.

      Tony,
Your 17 year old is to old, you will get nothing for them. The only one who qualifies is your 16 year old and you and wife provided you meet the criteria

  10. Patricia G.

My son is on permanent disability, my ex-husband has been claiming him as a disabled dependent, also my ex owes money to the IRS. 2 questions
1-Will my son get a stimulus check
2-Are the stimulus checks a advance to his monthly $ and not receive and money for a few months
3-Will his stimulus check go towards my ex-IRS bill?

I have been divorced for 5 years and they put my Stimulus check towards his debt.
