  1. Brennie

Hi, I live and work in Germany and I plan on retiring here.
I want to apply for a Social Security Online account, but it states on the website that I need to be residing in the U.S. to apply for it. How do I go about getting an online account if I live in Germany?

    Thanks
    Brennie

    • A.C.

Hi, Brennie. We’re sorry for any inconvenience. You will need a U.S. address to register for a my Social Security account. Since you are living outside of the U.S., please contact your local  Federal Benefits Unit for any assistance related to Social Security benefits. Also, our Office of International Operations home page provides more information to assist our customers living abroad. We hope this helps.

    • A.C.

My husband is retiring in January 2023 and wants to start his Social Security 1/2023. His employer healthcare coverage will end 1/31/2023 so he doesn’t want to start his Medicare Part B until 2/1/2023. Can he apply online for just Social Security without Medicare Part B? The online application asks for information about his healthcare and employer coverage. I just want to make sure he’s not enrolling in Medicare Part B for 1/1/2023. We will start that online application in November for a Part B start date of 2/1/2023

    • A.C.

Hi, Susan. Thanks for visiting our blog. It really depends on if your husband is in his initial enrollment period. The date his coverage starts can depend on which month he signs up during his Initial Enrollment Period.  For more information about the enrollment periods and when Medicare coverage starts, please visit here. If he has additional questions, he can contact his local Social Security office. We hope this helps.

Why is the Social Security website not showing accurate information? I have claims still pending one is well over a year, and two will be a year next month. So what’s with the hold up. I was told by my caseworker I would hear something from them LAST WEEK, but never did. I’ve filled out all the necessary information, went to all the appointments they asked me to go to and still, placed on the waiting schedule.

  6. Shirley M.

My brother Joseph Greco is now in an assisted living facility in Liverpool NY. He had previously lived in Middletown, Conn. We need to switch his social security to Chase bank in Liverpool from Liberty Bank in Conn. how do we go about doing that? Thank you.

    • A.C.

Hi, Shirley. Thanks for visiting our blog. If your brother needs help managing his benefits, you may be interested in applying to become his representative payee. Please also note that having Power of Attorney does not give you legal authority to manage payments for someone receiving Social Security or SSI benefits. As a representative payee, you will have access to your brother’s records and the ability to update his account information. Generally, a face-to-face interview is required when applying to be someone’s representative payee. If your brother cannot be present, a statement from his doctor would be helpful. The statement should say that your brother is not able to -mentally and physically- manage his Social Security benefits and identify you as the person responsible to keep his finances in order. For more information, please read our publication, A Guide For Representative Payees. If you have specific questions, please contact your local Social Security office. We hope this helps.

  9. Stefani

What do I need to take for my child to keep getting he’s Benefits if he’s turning 18 and still goin to school ?

    • A.C.

Hi, Stefani. Thanks for your question. If your child is age 18, but still a full-time student at a secondary (or elementary) school, his benefits will continue until he graduates or until two months after he turns age 19, whichever is first. Generally, we send you a form to verify his school attendance. He can contact his local Social Security office. We hope this helps.

  10. Deneene

I want to take teachers retirement (small amount) out before ssa in 9 months. Will this affect the amount I’ll get at 62?

    • A.C.

Hi, Deneene. Thanks for visiting our blog. The Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) can affect how we calculate your benefit amount, resulting in a lower Social Security benefit than you otherwise would receive. A pension based on work that is not covered by Social Security (for example, Federal civil service and some State or local government agencies, such as police officers and some teachers) may cause the amount of your Social Security benefit to be reduced. For more information, please visit our Windfall Elimination Provision page. For additional specific questions, please call us at 1-800-772-1213, Monday through Friday, between 8:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m., for assistance. You can also contact your local Social Security office. We hope this helps.
