HI I am 63 and have a daughter that is 12 years told and I was told that I could start receiving my retirement benefits and because I have a 12 year old that there would be additional $1,000 paid to me bacuse of my daughter ?

    • Sue

Hi, Richard. Thanks for reading our blog and for your question. When you receive retirement or disability benefits or pass away, your child may be eligible for benefits on your record. During your initial interview for retirement, we should explore benefit eligibility for other family members. For more information, check out our Frequently Asked Questions. Your child may receive up to half of your full retirement benefit amount, but a separate benefit application is required. We typically pay a minor child’s benefits to a representative payee who must use the money to pay for the child’s needs. You can learn more at our Representative Payee webpage. If you have additional questions or want to schedule an appointment, please contact your local Social Security office. We hope this helps!

can I have the direct link to schedule an in person appointment. I was told in person is the only option to get a 2022 1099 for my mother who is now deceased. I’d like to schedule an appointment but have not found where to do that. Thanks

    • Sue

Hi, Robin. Thanks for reading our blog and for your question. To make an appointment to request your mother’s replacement SSA-1099 for 2022, you can call us at 1-800-772-1213, Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., or contact your local Social Security office. In certain cases, we may disclose SSA-1099 information from the record of a deceased person, only to a survivor of the deceased, and only if we can establish the relationship of the survivor to the deceased based on our records. You must provide proper identification and supporting documents. We hope this is helpful.

Hi, Janis, Thanks for reading our blog. The most convenient way to do business with us is to visit our website to get information and use our online services. There are several things you can do online: apply for benefits; start or complete your request for an original or replacement Social Security card; find publications; and get answers to frequently asked questions. If you still want to schedule an appointment with your local office, please call us at 1-800-772-1213, Monday through Friday, between 8:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. Wait times to speak to a representative are typically shorter Wednesdays through Fridays or later in the day. We hope this helps.

Well, I drove to the office. And of course the scanner code does not work, what a surprise. The office doesn’t open till 9 AM, which is kind of interesting since most places in the world opened at 8 Am. And trying to call on the phone is an absolute ridiculous nightmare because one, there’s no phone number for the local office, and to no one seems to answer the other one.

  7. gwyn B.

I have been on the phone forever trying to make an appt with my local ss office. Finally someone answered a half hour later from a different office. After arguing with that person for another half hour I got nowhere. I want to talk to someone in person to help me. I’m trying to make an appt. ahead of time since I have a drive to get there. I do not want to drive 30 minutes or longer to turned away. Please help me……

    • Ann C.

Hi, Gwyn. We are sorry to hear about your experience. We encourage you to work with your local Social Security office. You can ask to speak to a supervisor on your next call. We hope this is resolved soon.

      • James, B.

And how do we work with them when one there’s no phone number to call them to they never seem to have the office open. And three you can’t do everything online because my particular problem can’t be done online and they keep sending me to the local office, which I can’t get in.

  8. Tyler J.

Im in belief someone inserted my Social Security card in to PC rather then me. I was saving it for a certain time in my life.

  9. Julie

Could you give a time when the check in scanner starts working

Can I make an appointment to have my 9 month old baby obtain a SSN?
I have already filled out the application on line.
I would prefer to have a scheduled appointment when I bring in the required original documents to my Norristown PA local office. Can I obtain this new SSN for my son if I go as a “walk-in”?

    • Ann C.

Hi, Jane. Thanks for visiting our blog. Generally, appointments are not needed to apply for Social Security cards. Most offices do offer walk-in appointments; however, these appointments are on a first come, first serve basis. To find your local office information, please visit here. We hope this helps.
