    I was wondering if i could fax the application over with the copy of birth certificate for my client that i am working with or do i need to send all through mail

      Hi Mary, if you’re referring to an application for a Social Security card, any document you submit, must be an original or certified copy, current (not expired) and show the person’s name, and other identifying information (their date of birth or age). We offer the option to mail the completed application with original or certified documents to your local Social Security office or the nearest Card Center in your area. To learn more on the process and to see what documents you will need to get a card, please visit our “Social Security Number and Card” web page. Thanks!

    My Social Security card is so worn that it’s falling apart. Please send me a replacement.

    • R.F.

      Hi Kathleen, you will need to apply for a replacement Social Security card. We prefer a government issued document with your picture, as proof of identity to replace your card. If you do not have one or you cannot get one within a reasonable amount of time, we may be able to use other documents such as:
      •Employee identification card;
      •School identification card;
      •Health insurance card; or
      •U.S. military identification card.
      Any document you submit, must be an original or certified copy, current (not expired) and show your name, and other identifying information (date of birth or age).
      Also, realize that you may not need a replacement card. You will rarely need to show it. Knowing your Social Security number is what is important.
      To see if you’re eligible to apply for a replacement Social Security card online or to learn more on the process and to see what documents you will need to get a card, please visit our “Social Security Number and Card” web page.
      We offer the option to mail your completed application with the original documents or certified copies to your local Social Security office or the nearest Card Center in your area. We hope this helps!

    Is there a schedule for more states to be added to the online SSN replacement application? It is very inconvinient and usually expensive to drive and park in a big city just to prove you’ve lived here since birth, possess a passport and state driver’s license to get a replacement SS Card. I am a MN resident, U.S. Marine Corps Vet and a born and raised US Citizen.
