I have read that I can receive my late husbands military time. What do I need to do.

    • A.C.

Hi, Joyce. If you are referring to military credits, under certain circumstances, special extra earnings for military service from 1957 through 2001 can be credited to your record for Social Security purposes. These extra earnings credits may increase the amount of one’s Social Security benefit. Special extra earnings credits are granted for periods of active duty or active duty for training. They are not granted for inactive duty training. For more information on special extra earnings for military service, visit our Retirement Planner page here. We would be happy to review your husband’s record to ensure that his military service was considered. For assistance, you can call our toll-free number at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778). Representatives are available Monday through Friday between 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. Generally, you’ll have a shorter wait time if you call later in the day. Thanks!

Do you have a way to create a MYSSA account by mail? My wife and I are in our 50s and have done many credit transactions in the past making the “verify your identity” questions difficult, especially with a none of the above answer. Many financial institutions we use go by other legal names also. I have tried multiple times to create my account but but have not been able to pass with the questions provided. Asking questions about closed accounts from 4 years ago is also a problem. If the account was closed, remembering what we did 4 years ago without any records is also almost impossible. Thank you.

    • A.C.

Hi, James. You cannot create a personal my Social Security account via mail; however, you can visit your local Social Security office for assistance. Be sure to take a valid drivers license or state identification card with you. We hope this helps.

My question is simple, but I can’t find a simple answer. Hoping you can help me. I need a copy of my award letter. Is that the same as the verification letter I printed off today? If not where is it and can I print it off or do I need to go to ssa office?

    Thank you
