    A question.
Which of the three credit bureaus do I need to UNFREEZE to be able to create a SS account on line ?

    • V.V.

Hi Clara, thanks for the question. To create a my Social Security account online, you first must ask our Identity Services Provider to remove the freeze or alert. Equifax is the Identity Services Provider that provides identity verification services to the Social Security Administration. For more information, please visit http://www.Equifax.com.

To create a my Social Security account in person without removing the security freeze or fraud alert, visit your local Social Security office.

Every time I try to make an account it locks me out because my information isn’t “in their records.” It keeps telling me that they can’t verify who I am but I try to do that and it doesn’t let me make an account. I have also tried to email the SS support team but got no response.

    • Kyle K.

Im really trying hard not to get mad about this but some guy at my local social security office said he would route money from an old SSI account but did not do so. I am becoming impatient, I will not get mad with you unless you are extremely uncooperative. I really just want to get this over with.

      • R.F.

  8. Brett T.

I want to create SS accounts for my children before someone creates one using their number fraudulently, but it looks like you must be 18 to create the account–is that correct? Shouldn’t we be protecting kids numbers before they are hacked?

    • R.F.

Hello Brett. Yes, you must be at least 18 years of age to create an account. Also, you must be able to verify some information about yourself and:
      •Have a valid email address,
      •Have a Social Security number,
      •Have a U.S. mailing address.
You can only create an account using your own personal information and for your own exclusive use. You cannot create an account on behalf of another person or using another person’s information or identity, even if you have that person’s written permission. Thanks!

How does selling my 92Honda effect my SSI?

    • R.F.

Hi Sherry. Keep in mind, the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program is a needs based program that gives cash assistance to people with limited income and resources who are age 65 or older, blind or disabled.
If you sell your car, you need to tell us, since your income and resources may change and affect your SSI payments. Resources are things you own which could be changed to cash and used for food or shelter. A single person can have resources worth up to $2,000 and still get SSI.
Call us, we’ll help you figure it out. Our toll free number is 1-800-772-1213, representatives are available Monday through Friday, between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. Generally you will have a shorter wait time when you call later during the day or later in the week. Thanks!

I tried creating a password and my answers did not match my credit report so I’ve been locked out twice at this attempt. Does that mean someone else is using my social security number?
