man and woman on laptop It’s that time of year again. Preparing for tax season can seem overwhelming. Some forms and paperwork might be difficult to track down. If you misplaced your Benefits Statement or haven’t received it by the end of January, we’ve made it easy to go online to get a replacement with a personal my Social Security account.

An SSA-1099, also called a Benefit Statement, is a tax form Social Security mails each year in January to the more than 60 million people who receive Social Security benefits. It shows the total amount of benefits received from Social Security in the previous year so people know how much Social Security income to report to the IRS on their tax return.

For noncitizens who live outside of the United States and received or repaid Social Security benefits last year, we’ll send form SSA-1042S instead. The forms SSA-1099 and SSA-1042S are not available for people who receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI).

If you currently live in the United States and need a replacement form SSA-1099 or SSA-1042S, we have a way for you to get a replacement quickly and easily. Go online and get a replacement form with a personal my Social Security account.

Every worker in the United States should create a personal my Social Security account. The secure and personalized features of my Social Security are valuable tools to help Americans plan for retirement.

I need to obtain a copy of my deceased brothers 2018 social security benefits in order to file his income tax. I am sure
his copy was returned as his home was sold & the mail not forwarded. Please advise what steps I need to take to get this important information for IRS filing.

Hi, Sylvia. We are sorry to hear about your loss. The SSA-1099 is mailed to the last address in our records and is intended for the spouse or executor of the deceased. If you did not receive the benefit statement, the executor will need to go into the local Social Security office with proof of death and proof of executorship. An SSA-1099 can also be given to someone receiving benefits on the deceased beneficiary’s record such as a spouse, parent, or child of the deceased. If you need more information, call our toll-free number at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778) and ask a representative for assistance. We hope this helps.

Surely it’s a joke that one can obtain a “replacement 1099-SSA online!” I guess that may be correct if the only one you need is the past tax year. You have nothing earlier online. Your phone system for callbacks fails to register either voice or numerical responses. (I have been trying this for several hours with calls and waits for return calls that have failed several times). Apparently my only option for obtaining the urgently needed copy of my 2017 1099-SSA is to drive 40 miles to the nearest SS office, wait in line, and request a printout of the form! Most of your web links are broken as well. I will be happy to let my congressman know how broken your system seems to be, but I doubt that will help any time soon!

Hi, Marjorie. We are sorry to hear about your frustration and that you had difficulty reaching someone by phone. We may have been experiencing higher than normal call volume. For years prior to the last year, you can call us again at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778) between 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. to speak to one of our representatives for assistance. Or you can contact your local Social Security office. Generally, you will have a shorter wait time if you call later in the day. You can also click “Get Help” in your personal my Social Security account to “Ask a Question”. Click “Talk to an Expert” for a call back. We hope this helps.

The IRS seems to have lost the social security form stating the amount of taxes withheld from my social security in2018 and is requesting a copy. How do I get a copy of the document stating the taxes withheld from my social security payments in 2018?

Hi, Nancy. Since you are living outside of the U.S. you can contact your local Federal Benefits Unit for any assistance related to Social Security benefits.
