Get Your Social Security Benefit Statement (SSA-1099)

Tax season is approaching, and Social Security has made replacing your annual Benefit Statement even easier. The Benefit Statement is also known as the SSA-1099 or the SSA-1042S. Now you can get a copy of your 1099 anytime and anywhere you want using our online services.

A Social Security 1099 is a tax form Social Security mails each year in January to people who receive Social Security benefits. It shows the total amount of benefits you received from Social Security in the previous year so you know how much Social Security income to report to the IRS on your tax return.

If you live in the United States and you need a replacement form SSA-1099 or SSA-1042S, simply go online and request an instant, printable replacement form through your personal my Social Security account.

A replacement SSA-1099 or SSA-1042S is available for the previous tax year after February 1.

If you already have a my Social Security account, you can log in to your online account to view and print your SSA-1099 or SSA-1042S. If you don’t have access to a printer, you can save the document on your computer or laptop or even email it. If you don’t have a my Social Security account, creating one is very easy to do and usually takes less than 10 minutes.

If you receive benefits or have Medicare, your my Social Security account is also the best way to:

  • Get your benefit verification letter;
  • Check your benefit and payment information;
  • Change your address and phone number;
  • Change your direct deposit information;
  • Request a replacement Medicare card; or
  • Report your wages if you work and receive Social Security disability insurance or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits.

If you’re a noncitizen who lives outside of the United States and you received or repaid Social Security benefits last year, we will send you form SSA-1042S in the mail. The forms SSA-1099 and SSA-1042S are not available for people who receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI).

With a personal my Social Security account, you can do much of your business with us online, on your time, like get a copy of your SSA-1099 form. Visit our website to find out more.

  1. 2.22.2019 – I have been trying to get a new Password rescheduled for almost 6 months now. I have called the administration and was told it had to be done online. I have gone through the instructions online several times now (being told the reset would be mailed to me) and have never, to date, received anything. I’m a little frustrated since I can’t log in and I need this information for my financial advisor. Please advice what I need to do. Marianna Cutter (720) 621-5634 or marianna@newlevelradio.com. Thank you.

      • You do not have any remedy for your poor operating system! I have been blocked from an account of which it have never been on, because you have the wrong information /address attached to my ss# even though you send my mail to my residence every month! As a US government agency you all should be ashamed to call yourselves civil employees for you lack of competence to rectify lthrse life altering situations for people. You all are often aloof and dismissive to the taxpayers whom allow for you to retain employment. So I would appreciate it you were NOT to reply to these comments with your obnoxiously generic helpless reference to any information on this multi-decade outdated website!

  2. “(You can) even email it”. NO! Not unless you know how to encrypt the file first. Standard email is not considered secure, and it is a bad idea to recommend using it for documents that contain sensitive personal information such as your SSN.

  3. I have an EXTREME VISUAL IMPAIRMENT and am in need of (large print, if possible) printed, paper Social Security information. I will appreciate any help you could provide! The print on this email is entirely too light and too small for me to be able to read! I have Macular Degeneration and am totally blind in my left eye, and had cataract extraction on my right eye on 1/31/2019. I have no idea of what this text said, to be honest.

  4. This is very good. I am very happy that any one can
get their SSA-1099 on line. That is very encouraging
in deed. I am proud of your Department.

  5. I have also been trying to get a new password for my account for 9 months! Im not even going to go into what ive been through. I dont understand what the problem is! Guess ill have to visit my local officr in person for help.
    This is not acceptable!

  6. Americans living overseas are not allowed to have a social security online account, due to the US mailing address requirement. This is unfair and the justification used needs examination. How come we are able to have an online Medicare account, while still living outside the US and not having a US mailing address? I am hoping that Social Security will follow Medicare lead.

  7. How do people living overseas get they SSA 1099? I live in Okinawa, Japan with a 7 digit ZIP and unable to set up an account!

  8. I realize this is not the place for my problem however I have tried a dozen times to establish an account. I had an account but in my dotage I forgot my password and entry name.
    Can someone help me??

  9. Hello, my name is Maria Santana, I am retired with full retirement age at 66 years old, and I continue working full time, I am already 70 years old and I would like you to inform me if every year after this age (70 years) I will continue receiving the increase annual to my retirement for the time worked.

  10. Greatly appreciate your updates. Have received SSA benefits for seven plus years however I cannot establish and On-Line Acct as my information is said “Unknown to SSA.” Have sent many requests for assistance to SSA in Baltimore with no replies. US Embassy Manila has tried to help but they cannot establish my SSA On-Line.
William Carl Foster, MSgt, USAF, Retired

    Thank you.

    • Hi, Angelica. For your security, we do not have access to private information in this venue. We ask that members in our Blog community to work with their local Social Security office with specific questions about their case. You can also call our toll free number is 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778). Representatives are available Monday through Friday between 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. Generally, you’ll have a shorter wait time if you call later in the week. We hope this helps.

  11. I don’t have the IRS copies, my husband Teddy Alton Messick died 10/13/2017, I have my Social Security and I am residing here in Japan, non citizen too. My DOB 01/15/1958

  12. I am a retired service member and because my retirement was more than 38,000 they taxed my social security, this is the first time this has happened and I was really shocked, it reduced my return by 1200 dollars. The military takes the tax out automatically each month plus a extra 100 I authorized each month, I just never knew about the 38,000 thing especially since I only draw 1050 a month social security which I consider I’m still below the poverty line in any state in the USA now. I actually thought my SS was protected unless I was a millionaire in which case it wouldn’t bother me. Maybe you can help explain this. Thank You.

  13. Does the SSA1099 for 2018 year not show Part D premiums deducted from medicare in 2018? Did not see that amount on 2018 statement. It was on the 2017 statement.

  14. I would like to know how to get a W2 for my social security for 2018. I should have received it by the end of January.

  15. I requested a 1099 and was given the date it should have arrived. That date has since come and gone with no 1099. It appears to be another empty promise made by an anonymous computer generated response. It is very much akin to the VA’s promise of a return phone call if you leave your name and number. They just don’t tell you what century.

    • Hi, Felecia. Thanks for your question. Generally, when applying for a replacement Social Security card for a child under the age of 18, we consider the parent(s) or step-parent with custody, as the proper applicant. Remember that knowing their numbers is what is important. You will rarely need to show their cards, but if you need information on how to obtain a replacement Social Security card, visit our Frequent Asked Questions. You will need to present documents proving your identity, your children’s identities and citizenship status (if not already established), and evidence of your relationship to, or responsibility for, your children. You can use birth certificates to prove your children’s age or citizenship. But you cannot use it as proof of identity. We hope this helps.

My husband Morris, receives total disability from the Veteran’s Administration and total disability from Social Security, he is in a hospital bed and has to be cared for by me, Beatriz Sons his wife. What am I supposed to do about this, because the last time they said not to file because he didn’t have anything to file. What should I do now? I have never been to USA and do not have a Social Security Number.

  17. I have been attempting for over 2 months to create a “MySocialSecurity” account with no success. I have called several times after being locked out at every attempt and after reviewing and unlocking my account I am instructed to try again. I know for certain that I am answering my security questions correctly. I am a senior disabled person who doesn’t drive and live almost an hour away from my local office. HOW CAN I GET HELP? Thank you. Debbie

    • Hi, Jerry. If you and your payee are not getting along, you may be able to receive your own Social Security check unless SSA believes you are not capable of managing or directing the management of your money. If you have a representative payee because of a physical or a mental disability, in order to become your own payee, you must show SSA that you are now mentally and physically able to handle your money yourself. You could provide: A doctor’s statement that there has been a change in your condition and that the doctor believes you are able to care for yourself; or an official copy of a court order saying that the court believes that you can take care of yourself; or other evidence that shows your ability to take care of yourself. If you have specific questions, please call 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778) between 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. to speak to one of our representatives. Or you can contact your local Social Security office. Generally, you’ll have a shorter wait time if you call later in the day. We hope this helps!

  19. My 93 year old mother, Helen Coiner 446-22-****, has not received her 1099 tax form for 2018. She does not have a computer and I cannot set up an online account for her, as per SSA rules. How do I get her a form mailed to her address? She is at an assisted living facility but has changed apartments from 317 to 618. I don’t know if that is why she didn’t receive her tax form.

    • Hi, Deanna. We are sorry to hear of your difficulty in trying to help your mother change her account information with us and obtain a replacement SSA-1099. Our current policy does not allow people to set up my Social Security accounts for others. We need to confirm that you are who you say you are, and that you are a proper representative payee under our rules, before you can access any of our services on your mother’s behalf. We understand how inconvenient this may be for you, but hope you understand our role in protecting everyone’s personal information. Since it sounds like your mother has trouble managing her Social Security account, you may be interested in applying to become your mother’s representative payee, which is different than Power of Attorney. If approved to serve as your mother’s representative payee, it will make it easier for you in the future to update Social Security information for her.

If you are interested in applying to be a representative payee, you should read our publication, A Guide for Representative Payees, to understand a payee’s responsibilities. If you have specific questions, or to make an appointment, please call 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778) between 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. to speak to one of our representatives. Or you can contact your local Social Security office Generally, you’ll have a shorter wait time if you call later in the day. We hope this helps!

  20. I need the form that shows my insurance (Medicare) coverage for 2018 starting in June 2018when I retired.
Can you please send me a new form?

  21. No information is provided regarding who to contact, as in talking to a live person without sitting on hold for 3 hours only to be told there’s nothing that person can do. to CORRECT a 1099 that SSA has mailed. I received an incorrect 1099 for 2018 from SSA, for income I allegedly received.

    Thank you!

    • Hi, Fred. We are sorry to hear about your loss. For your security, we do not have access to private information in this venue. The SSA-1099 is mailed to the last address in our records and is intended for the spouse or executor of the deceased. Since you did not receive it in the mail, you as the executor will need to visit your local Social Security office with proof of death and proof of executorship. An SSA-1099 can also be given to someone receiving benefits on the deceased beneficiary’s record such as a spouse, parent, or child of the deceased. If you need more information, call our toll-free number at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778) and ask a representative for assistance. Just a reminder – please be cautious about posting personal information on social media. We hope this helps.

  23. I have tried 5 times now to reset my password and have yet to receive the promised letter from SS!! I have been trying since December!!! No response. I am extremely disappointed with this lack of follow up. I have called and called,
Social Security and have had to wait for an hour on the phone only to have no help provided. Please please do something about this extremely poor service

    • Hi, Susan. To terminate your enrollment, we will help you submit a signed request for termination or Form CMS-1763. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) requires, when possible, a personal interview be conducted with everyone who wishes to terminate entitlement. Therefore, we do not offer form CMS-1763 online. For an interview, you can call us at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778) 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Friday or go to your local Social Security office. Generally, when calling our 800 number, you’ll have a shorter wait time if you call later in the day. We hope this helps.

  24. Question: Why US citizens, retired, living outside the USA territory, not having a US address, can´t have an account “my Social Security”?? This doesn’t help much in getting information or documents o answers.??? From outside the USA it’s more difficult and complicated. Do you think this situation may change in the near future??? Thanks for your attention, understanding and help. Best regards

    • Hi, Jose. We appreciate you using our blog to communicate with us! At this time you must have a U. S. mailing address to create or to access your online account. The “my Social Security” authentication system requires address verification as one of the essential criteria for issuing an account. People with APO/FPO/DPO addresses can create an account overseas, but our system does not support registration and account creation for users with a foreign address yet. Please contact your local Federal Benefits Unit for any assistance related to your Social Security benefits. Also, our Office of International Operations (OIO) home page provides more information to assist our customers living abroad. We hope this information helps!

    • Hi, Diane. We only recognize a designated representative payee for handling Social Security funds for another person. If your in laws are not capable of managing and directing her Social Security benefits, someone should consider applying to be her representative payee. Even if someone may power of attorney, you, or someone else, would still need to apply to serve as their payee. To learn more about becoming a representative payee, you can read our publication,

        A Guide for Representative Payees

  50. I have tried to open my online account and it was unable to make it. More of that, I have received notice of “suspension”.
I think, SSA has to make the process of connection with own account a little bit simpler, or give the option to use alternative to a password possibility to go through the “sign in” process. Not just sent a short massage: “suspended your account” notification.

    I appreciate.

  55. All I want is my ssa-1099 for 2018 form to complete my 2018 taxes. I received my “form ssa-1099-social security benefit statement” but not the actual form that needs to be sent in with my taxes. I tried to sign up for an account but was told my info was incorrect. It’s not. I rechecked it. Perhaps I already signed up in the past, but I have no recollection of that. I requested by phone a replacement form be sent to me, but it will take too long, and I’d like to complete my taxes and get them sent in. How do I proceed? I am currently waiting for a call back to tell me if I have to have an actual copy with my taxes or can just copy the correct amounts from my statement.

  68. Trying to get a SS 1099 year end statement for 2018, for my dad who died on Jan 25, 2019. I believe his 1099 for 2018 did not go out — or at least we never received it.

Very difficult to get a human on the line — finally did. Got an appointment to process my father’s application to adjust my mom’s SS ti reflect Dad’s higher SS payment.

Did not know that I did not receive a 1099 at that point. I have again tried to call to get an appointment to get a duplicate 1099 — but i have been told I can not get an appointment — that I must just walk in. My dad’s account online — is deactivated. I must file his taxes for 2018 and he was definitely alive Jan 1 – Dec 31 , 2019 — so taxes must be filed. Why can not I get an appointment to get the paperwork that my dad’s estate should have gotten in the first place.

Is there a way — i can make an appointment?

    THank you.

    • Hi, William. We are sorry to hear about this situation. You can only create a personal my Social Security account using your own information and for your own exclusive use. You cannot create or use an account on behalf of another person, even if you have that person’s written permission. Because of privacy and security concerns, Social Security cannot speak to you about your father’s benefits. Even if someone has power of attorney, someone would still need to apply to serve as his payee. You can also call us at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778) to request an appointment. We hope this information helps.

  104. Today I had spoken with two of your agents regarding two non-related services SS provides and when I stayed on the line for the survey at the end, I tried to give both agents a 5 star rating on the first question because I was very satisfied with the service I had received.
But the next question opened with the statement…
“Why were you dissatisfied with the service you had received ?” (or something to that effect).

The only complaint I have is with the accuracy of the survey system. Your agents quickly and efficiently resolved both of my situations.
They were intelligent, articulate and both made sure I knew of all my options for next time, all while being polite, friendly and ‘accessible’.

  105. I find it amazing that SSA has no complaint form other than very specifically targeted forms. If I am incorrect about this please let me know where I might find a complaint form that could be used for delay in disability benefits processing.

    • Hi, David. We are sorry to hear you did not receive the level of customer service you expected. You can submit feedback by visiting our Contact Social Security page. Once there, select the “Email Us” link. This will take you to the “Email A Question to our Support Team” form, where you can complete and submit a compliment, complaint, or suggestion. We hope this helps.

  107. Yeah, I’m leaving a reply alright. I’m pissed as hell about not being able to log into my S.S. acct.–I tried using the info. on my file ( that didn’t work); I tried using “create new account” and that didn’t work either.
Your so-called security steps prevent even legitimate taxpayers from logging in to their accounts no matter how hard they try. SO WHAT GOOD ARE YOU?–We
can’t even talk to a “live person” without waiting on the
phone for 30 min. or more.–As a U.S. taxpayer, WHAT THE HECK AM I PAYING FOR? Not only does your system prevent me from logging in, I can’t even talk to a live person without waiting for a return phone
    call to my phone.

I wait between 3 to 10 minutes for it to arrive and it never does. The site states it could take up to 2 minutes. So, I can not go into my account and even look up anything. With a my Social Security account, you can review estimates of your retirement, disability, and survivors benefits, your earnings record, and the estimated Social Security and Medicare taxes you’ve paid. We hope this helps.

    • Hi, Martha. In certain cases, noncitizens can receive Social Security benefits. But, in order for an individual to receive benefits, we must have evidence of their lawful presence. That means before we can pay out benefits for any given month, we must have evidence that the individual was lawfully present in the United States, during that month. To learn more, please visit our Frequently Asked Questions. We hope this helps.
