man and woman on laptop It’s that time of year again. Preparing for tax season can seem overwhelming. Some forms and paperwork might be difficult to track down. If you misplaced your Benefits Statement or haven’t received it by the end of January, we’ve made it easy to go online to get a replacement with a personal my Social Security account.

An SSA-1099, also called a Benefit Statement, is a tax form Social Security mails each year in January to the more than 60 million people who receive Social Security benefits. It shows the total amount of benefits received from Social Security in the previous year so people know how much Social Security income to report to the IRS on their tax return.

For noncitizens who live outside of the United States and received or repaid Social Security benefits last year, we’ll send form SSA-1042S instead. The forms SSA-1099 and SSA-1042S are not available for people who receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI).

If you currently live in the United States and need a replacement form SSA-1099 or SSA-1042S, we have a way for you to get a replacement quickly and easily. Go online and get a replacement form with a personal my Social Security account.

Every worker in the United States should create a personal my Social Security account. The secure and personalized features of my Social Security are valuable tools to help Americans plan for retirement.

    – Please make your information shorter and give access for feedback make an index of important articles.
    – I would like to know why do we pay tax on money that we already paid taxes.
    – Why people who works part time after retirement pays social security and medicare but does not get anything back.

    • R.F.

      Thank you for your comment, Bernardo. Current law requires everyone working in covered employment or self-employment, regardless of age or eligibility for benefits, to pay Social Security and Medicare taxes.
      Generally, if you continue to work while receiving retirement benefits, your monthly benefit amount may increase. Each year, we review the records for all working Social Security recipients to see if additional earnings may increase monthly benefits.
      For further income tax questions, you will need to contact the IRS. Their toll-free number is 1-800-829-1040.

    There is nothing wrong with the current SS benefit statement . However – having lived in the US for over 50 plus years – what I need is to have my SS card replaced. It is worn out and needs a replacement.

    Could someone guide me in this respect? I have no desire to visit the nearest SS office. Could this be done online or via US Mail services?

    Thanks for your response. Please send me an email, which would be appreciated.

    • R.F.

      Hello Riazul, we prefer a government issued document with your picture, as proof of identity to replace your Social Security card. If you do not have one or you cannot get one within a reasonable amount of time, we may be able to use other documents such as:
      •Employee identification card;
      •School identification card;
      •Health insurance card; or
      •U.S. military identification card.
      Any document you submit, must be an original or certified copy, current (not expired) and show your name, and other identifying information (date of birth or age).
      We do offer the option to mail your completed application with the original or certified documents to your local Social Security office or the nearest Card Center in your area.
      Also, realize that you may not need a replacement card. You will rarely need to show it. Knowing your Social Security number is what is important.
      To see if you’re eligible to apply for a replacement Social Security card online or to learn more on the process and what documents you will need to get a card, please visit our “Social Security Number & Card” web page. We hope this helps!

  6. Randi L.

    My mother has Alzheimer’s and can’t sign her name. She needs a replacement 1099 because somehow one hasn’t shown up yet in her mail box. My father wants to get his taxes done and is wondering what has happened to it. He is not allowed to set up an account in her name so how do we get a replacement 1099 for her? He’s been on the phone for hours with no response. Please advise. Thanks

    • R.F.

      Hi Randi. We’re sorry to hear that your father had difficulty reaching someone by phone. We may have been experiencing higher than normal call volume.
      Generally, when calling our toll free number (1-800-772-1213), you will have a shorter wait time if you call later during the day or later in the week. Representatives are available Monday through Friday, between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m.
      Based on the information you provided, it sounds like your mother needs help managing her Social Security benefits. You or your father may want to consider applying to become your mother’s Representative Payee.
      As a representative payee, you will be able to talk with us and have access to your mother’s records. In the future, it will make it easier for you to update her account information. A face-to-face interview is required when applying to become someone’s representative payee. You will be asked to provide supporting documentation about your mother’s condition and you will need to contact your local office.
      We understand how inconvenient this may be, but we hope that you understand our role in protecting everyone’s personal information. Thanks!
