Coming Soon: Improved Check Your Application or Appeal Status Service

woman on laptopIn December, Social Security will launch a new service for my Social Security account holders where the public can check on the status of an application for benefits or an appeal filed with us.

The service will provide detailed information about retirement, disability, survivors, Medicare, and Supplemental Security Income claims and appeals filed either online on our website or with a Social Security employee.

The ability to check your application status will be available online to everyone who has or opens a secure personal my Social Security account. You can open an account on our website.

The service will provide important information about your claim or appeal, including, as appropriate:

  • Date of filing.
  • Current claim location.
  • Scheduled hearing date and time.
  • Incomplete applications.
  • Servicing office location.
  • Claim or appeal decision.

If you are unable to open a personal my Social Security account, you can still call 1-800-772-1213 to check your claim status by using our automated system using the confirmation number you received when you filed your claim.

Providing our customers with more claim status information helps us meet our goal of delivering innovative, quality services to you and helping secure today and tomorrow.

    I don’t understand how social security can add something to the online website that was already there to begin with. Everything they are supposed to be adding was already available. I have been using the website for a few years now while I’m waiting to hear about my SSI claim. Everything listed above was already on the website. Why shut down the benefits applications part if there is nothing to change?

    I applied online for spousal benefit for Social Security back on 8/21/18. At first I could see that my application had been sent to Birmingham, AL for servicing and that status was pending. As of today, I still have not heard from anyone by letter nor phone call and it’s been over 90 days. A coworker applied last year and it was all done within 6 weeks. I’ve called and been told it was received but that’s it. There doesn’t seem to be anywhere on line I can check. Please let me know if there is anything else I can do. Thanks,

You can request to speak with the manager to see how we can help to expedite resolution of your situation. If you are unable to visit the local office, you can call our toll free number at 1-800-772-1213, representatives are available Monday through Friday, between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. Generally, you will have a shorter wait time if you call later in the week.

    I received a letter telling me to go to the social security site then check your claim status enter the security code they gave me in the letter. I have tried more than one way to enter this code and every time it was rejected I called the phone number they hung up on me due to many people calling. I’ll keep calling wasting my time trying to get information so I can get my part B insurance stared before the end on Nov. not a happy person

    I was incoserated 2013, and came home 2016 my benifet were discontinued. I had been reciecing benifits since the age of 19… Ive been denied 3 times and would like my benifits back. Ive been homeless for the three years that ive been released from prision…. My diagnosis is manic bipolor. Ptsd( post tramatic stress disorder, scisophective disorder… Its relally hard to get and keep a job with these disorder…. Please help….

      Hi Martavia, thank you for reaching out and we are sorry to hear about your situation. If you were recently denied, you may file an appeal if you are within 60 days of receiving the decision.

      If you need help requesting an appeal, contact your local Social Security office, or call us at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778) between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m., Monday through Friday.

    I sent in a reconsideration of payment to my local office in Joplin Missouri on. No vember 13 2018. I sent in a finamcial statement..The amount of overpayment was 8774.10.. I am wanting to know the decision…

    Trying to obtain status of spousal benefits claim filed online 9/7/18, confirmation # 57138318. Received one phone call on 9/20/18 verifying my info, summary sent to me on that date. No further information on line. Waiting over 2 months.

    The online chat is awful. I was on a chat with a Rafael, after a couple of questions he asked, I stared at the screen for over an hour and he never came back. It never indicated the chat was over. The last thing he said give me a moment to research this for you and he never returned. Very frustrating!

      Hi Douglas, thank you for your question. It sounds like you already have a my Social Security account. One of the things that you can do in your account is check the status of your application. Some of the things that the application status will show are the date we received your application or appeal and if a decision has been made. If you’re unable to check the status of your application online, you can speak with one of our representatives at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778) Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.
